Conclusion Acknowledgement Bibliography Biographical Sketches Summary Data on the biological active substances and therapeutical properties of more than 131 medicinal and aromatic (spicy-aromatic) plants widely distributed and frequently used in Azerbaijan are given in this chapter. The majority of the described species contain flavonoids (115 sp.), vitamin C (84 sp.), fatty oils (78 sp.), tannins (77 sp.), alkaloids (74 sp.) and essential oils (73 sp.). A prevalence of these biological active substances defines the broad spectrum of therapeutic actions of the described plants. So, significant number of species possess antibacterial (69 sp.), diuretic (60 sp.), wound healing (51 sp.), styptic (46 sp.) and expectorant (45 sp.) peculiarities. The majority of the species are used in curing of gastrointestinal (89 sp.), bronchopulmonary (61 sp.), dermatovenerologic (61 sp.), nephritic (55 sp.) and infectious (52 sp.) diseases, also for treatment of festering -

After 20 years of diabetes, almost all patients suffering from type I diabetes mellitus and about 60% of type II diabetics have DR. Several studies have tried to identify drugs and therapies to treat DR though little attention has been given to flavonoids, one type of polyphenols, which can be found in high levels mainly in fruits and vegetables, but also in other foods such as grains, cocoa, green tea or even in red wine. -

Kalikar Department of Pharmacy,Government Polytechnic, Gadgenagar, VMV Road, Amravati(MS), India 444603 Received on:14-07-2012; Revised on: 19-08-2012; Accepted on:23-09-2012 ABSTRACT Flavonoids belong to a group of polyphenolic compounds, which are classified as flavonols, flavonones, flavones, flavan-3-ols and isoflavones, anthocynidins according to the positions of the substitutes present on the parent molecule. Flavonoids occur as aglycones, glycosides and methylated derivatives in plants. Flavonoids occur naturally in fruit, vegetables, and beverages such as tea and wine and over 4000 structurally unique flavonoids have been identified in plant sources. These are primarily recognized as the pigments responsible for the many shades of yellow, orange, and red in flowers, fruits, and leaves. The major actions of flavonoids are those against cardiovascular diseases, ulcers, viruses, inflammation, osteoporosis, diarrhea and arthritis. Flavonoids have also been known to possess biochemical effects, which inhibit a number of enzymes such as aldosereductase, xanthine oxidase, phosphodiesterase, Ca+2-ATPase, lipoxygenase, cycloxygenase, etc. They also have a regulatory role on different hormones like estrogens, androgens and thyroid hormones. Flavonoids like quercetin are shown to produce anti-inflammatory effect. The flavonoids in tea are found to be responsible for the prevention of osteoporosis. Quercetin is now found to show inhibiting effects against herpes simplex virus. Antidiarrheal effect is found to be shown by the flavonoids present in cocoa. -

However, their bioavailability and bioactivity depend in part on the conjugation of sugars and other functional groups to the flavone core. Two studies were conducted to determine the effects of processing on stability and profiles of flavones in celery and parsley, and a third explored the effects of deglycosylation on the anti-inflammatory activity of flavones in vitro and their absorption in vivo. In the first processing study, celery leaves were combined with β-glucosidase-rich food ingredients (almond, flax seed, or chickpea flour) to determine test for enzymatic hydrolysis of flavone apiosylglucosides. Although all of the enzyme-rich ingredients could convert apigenin glucoside to aglycone, none had an effect on apigenin apiosylglucoside. Thermal stability of flavones from celery was also tested by isolating them and heating at 100 °C for up to 5 hours in pH 3, 5, or 7 buffer. Apigenin glucoside was most stable of the flavones tested, with minimal degradation regardless of pH or heating time. -

Phytochemistry studies are increasing because most metabolites with pharmacological interest are obtained from plants. The phenolic compounds of V. montana, V. polita and V. spuria were tentatively identified by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS. The phenolic profiles showed that flavones were the major compounds (V. montana: 7 phenolic acids, 5 flavones, 4 phenylethanoids and 1 isoflavone; V. polita: 10 flavones, 5 phenolic acids, 2 phenylethanoids, 1 flavonol and 1 isoflavone; V. spuria: 10 phenolic acids, 5 flavones, 2 flavonols, 2 phenylethanoids and 1 isoflavone), despite the overall predominance of flavones.
