Quality Assurance Challenges and Opportunities Faced by Private Universities in Zimbabwe
Journal of Case Studies in Education Quality assurance challenges and opportunities faced by private Universities in Zimbabwe Evelyn Chiyevo Garwe Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education ABSTRACT The study sought to provide an understanding of the quality assurance challenges and opportunities faced by private universities in Zimbabwe. The study analyzed the factors determining provision of quality higher education in private universities and the resultant effects of failing to achieve the minimum acceptable standards. The author employed the case study method which falls within the qualitative research paradigm. The major techniques used were documentary analysis, direct observation and participant observation by the author. The results showed that financial constraints and poor corporate governance were the major factors leading to failure by private universities to uphold high quality standards. The study also highlighted the need for an effective national quality assurance agency in making sure that only institutions with the necessary financial, material and human resources should be allowed to operate as private universities. Key words: Quality, quality assurance, private university, corporate governance Quality assurance challenges, Page 1 Journal of Case Studies in Education INTRODUCTION Private universities in Africa should be considered a potential growth industry, which may generate revenue, employment and other spillovers to the rest of the economy (Nyarko, 2001). In Zimbabwe, private universities started in 1992 in response to the need to fill in gaps in access to higher education. The legislative measures initiated to establish private institutions of higher education also opened doors for the entry of cross-border higher education which is offered through private providers. Kariwo (2007) reported that the private higher education sector in Zimbabwe contributed a small share of enrolments and programme offerings in higher education . -

Knowledge sharing workshops took place in December 2017, involving over 40 policy makers and programme implementers working to end FGM/C in Somaliland. sustainable solutions for ending hunger and poverty Supported by the CGIAR ASTI Directory of Agricultural R&D Agencies in 31 African Countries April 2011 ABOUT ASTI The Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators (ASTI) initiative compiles, processes, and disseminates data on institutional developments and investments in worldwide agricultural R&D, and analyzes and reports on these trends. Tracking these developments in ways that facilitate meaningful comparisons among different countries, types of agencies, and points in time is critical for keeping policymakers abreast of science policy issues pertaining to agriculture. The main objective of the ASTI initiative is to assist policymakers and donors in making better informed decisions about the funding and operation of public and private agricultural science and technology agencies by making available internationally comparable information on agricultural research investments and institutional changes. Better-informed decisions will improve the efficiency and impact of agricultural R&D systems and ultimately enhance productivity growth of the agriculture sector. The ASTI initiative is managed by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and involves collaborative alliances with many national and regional R&D agencies, as well as international institutions. The initiative, which is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with additional support from IFPRI, is widely recognized as the most authoritative source of information on the support for and structure of agricultural R&D worldwide. ASTI data and associated reports are made freely available for research policy formulation and priority-setting purposes (http://www.asti.cgiar.org). A Report on the Mapping Study of Peace & Security Engagement in African Tertiary Institutions Written by Funmi E. Vogt This project was funded through the support of the Carnegie Corporation About the African Leadership Centre In July 2008, King’s College London through the Conflict, Security and Development group (CSDG), established the African Leadership Centre (ALC). In June 2010, the ALC was officially launched in Nairobi, Kenya, as a joint initiative of King’s College London and the University of Nairobi. The ALC aims to build the next generation of scholars and analysts on peace, security and development. The idea of an African Leadership Centre was conceived to generate innovative ways to address some of the challenges faced on the African continent, by a new generation of “home‐grown” talent. The ALC provides mentoring to the next generation of African leaders and facilitates their participation in national, regional and international efforts to achieve transformative change in Africa, and is guided by the following principles: a) To foster African‐led ideas and processes of change b) To encourage diversity in terms of gender, region, class and beliefs c) To provide the right environment for independent thinking d) Recognition of youth agency e) Pursuit of excellence f) Integrity The African Leadership Centre mentors young Africans with the potential to lead innovative change in their communities, countries and across the continent. The Centre links academia and the real world of policy and practice, and aims to build a network of people who are committed to the issue of Peace and Security on the continent of Africa. -
Prioritization of Shelter/NFI Needs
Prioritization of Shelter/NFI needs Date: 31st May 2018 Shelter and NFI Needs As of 18 May 2018, the overall number of displaced people is 345,000 households. This figure is based on DTM round 10, partner’s assessments, government requests, as well as the total of HH supported since July 2017. The S/NFI updated its prioritisation in early May and SNFI Cluster partners agreed on several criteria to guide prioritisation which include: - 1) type of emergency, 2) duration of displacement, and 3) sub-standard shelter conditions including IDPS hosted in collective centres and open-air sites and 4) % of vulnerable HH at IDP sites. Thresholds for the criteria were also agreed and in the subsequent analysis the cluster identified 193 IDP hosting woredas mostly in Oromia and Somali regions, as well as Tigray, Gambella and Addis Ababa municipality. A total of 261,830 HH are in need of urgent shelter and NFI assistance. At present the Cluster has a total of 57,000 kits in stocks and pipeline. The Cluster requires urgent funding to address the needs of 204,830 HHs that are living in desperate displacement conditions across the country. This caseload is predicted to increase as the flooding continues in the coming months. Shelter and NFI Priority Activities In terms of priority activities, the SNFI Cluster is in need of ES/NFI support for 140,259 HH displaced mainly due to flood and conflict under Pillar 2, primarily in Oromia and Somali Regions. In addition, the Shelter and NFI Cluster requires immediate funding for recovery activities to support 14,000 HH (8,000 rebuild and 6,000 repair) with transitional shelter support and shelter repair activities under Pillar 3. -

II. Background Information “These peoples [the “Pygmies” and pastoralist peoples] still suffer discrimination experienced through the dispossession of their land and destruction of their livelihoods, cultures and identities, extreme poverty, lack of access to and participation in political decision-making and lack of access to education and health facilities.”1 Cameroon is home to one of the most diverse environments in Africa, with regions that have an equatorial monsoon climate, regions with a tropical humid climate, and regions with a tropical arid climate. Cameroon became an independent, sovereign nation in 1960 and a united one (when East and West Cameroon were united) in 1961.2 Cameroon has a population of over 22 million people. -
