  • Here Are Ladies

    Here Are Ladies

Here are Ladies By James Stephens THREE HEAVY HUSBANDS I He had a high nose. He looked at one over the collar, so to speak. His regard was very assured, and his speech was that short bundle of monosyllables which the subaltern throws at the orderly. He had never been questioned, and, the precedent being absent, he had never questioned himself. Why should he? We live by question and answer, but we do not know the reply to anything until a puzzled comrade bothers us and initiates that divine curiosity which both humbles and uplifts us. He wanted all things for himself. What he owned he wished to own completely. He would give anything away with the largest generosity, but he would share with no one— "Whatever is mine," said he, "must be entirely mine. If it is alive I claim its duty to the last respiration of its breath, and if it is dead I cannot permit a mortgage on it. Have you a claim on anything belonging to me? then you may have it entirely, I must have all of it or none." He was a stockbroker, and, by the methods peculiar to that mysterious profession, he had captured a sufficiency of money to enable him to regard the future with calmness and his fellow-creatures with condescension— perhaps the happiest state to which a certain humanity can attain. So far matters were in order. There remained nothing to round his life into the complete, harmonious circle except a wife; but as a stated income has the choice of a large supply, he shortly discovered a lady whose qualifications were such as would ornament any, however exalted, position—She was sound in wind and limb.

    Discography of the Mainstream Label

Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. In 1991 it was resurrected in order to reissue much of its holdings on compact disc, and in 1993, it was purchased by Sony subsidiary Legacy Records. 56000/6000 Series 56000 mono, S 6000 stereo - The Commodore Recordings 1939, 1944 - Billy Holiday [1964] Strange Fruit/She’s Funny That Way/Fine and Mellow/Embraceable You/I’ll Get By//Lover Come Back to Me/I Cover the Waterfront/Yesterdays/I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues/I’ll Be Seeing You 56001 mono, S 6001 stereo - Begin the Beguine - Eddie Heywood [1964] Begin the Beguine/Downtown Cafe Boogie/I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me/Carry Me Back to Old Virginny/Uptown Cafe Boogie/Love Me Or Leave Me/Lover Man/Save Your Sorrow 56002 mono, S 6002 stereo - Influence of Five - Hawkins, Young & Others [1964] Smack/My Ideal/Indiana/These Foolish Things/Memories Of You/I Got Rhythm/Way Down Yonder In New Orleans/Stardust/Sittin' In/Just A Riff 56003 mono, S 6003 stereo - Dixieland-New Orleans - Teagarden, Davison & Others [1964] That’s A- Plenty/Panama/Ugly Chile/Riverboat Shuffle/Royal Garden Blues/Clarinet

  • The Hollyridge Strings

    The Hollyridge Strings

The Hollyridge Strings The Hollyridge Strings were an in-house act released by Capitol Records. Throughout the 1960's, they were perhaps best known for their instrumental versions of Beatles songs. In fact, so popular was their first album that an album exists by "The Mustangs" whose cover is a take- off of the cover to the first instrumental Beatles album by the Strings. Stu Phillips arranged and conducted the first three volumes, plus the album with solo songs on it. Perry Botkin, Jr. and Mort Garson did the honors on volume four, but Garson alone did the job on volume five. Botkin had previously conducted the Strings some years before. For the interested fanatic, here are the Hollyridge Strings' Beatles albums in all their glory: The Beatles Song Book Capitol (S)T-2116 Side One Side Two 1. From Me to You 1. Can't Buy Me Love 2. I Saw Her Standing There 2. All My Loving 3. Please Please Me 3. A Taste of Honey 4. P.S. I Love You 4. Do You Want to Know a Secret? 5. Love Me Do 5. She Loves You 6. I Want to Hold Your Hand Two songs from this LP are featured on the promotional album, Balanced for Broadcast, from June, 1964 (Capitol PRO-2634/5). The album was also reviewed in the June 6, 1964, issue of Billboard. This record surprised all critics by climbing to the #15 position in the Billboard album listings (August 22, 1964). As it continued to sell, the success of this album, the Strings' first, prompted Capitol to create a series of songbooks -- a series for which the band became known.
