1980s !1 Eurovision Song Contest 1988 Björn Nordlund !1 Björn Nordlund 10 juni 2018 1988 Ne Partez pas sans moi Eurovision, sida !1 Björn Nordlund 10 juni 2018 1988 Suddenly it happens For you all whom read all the pages my number one song each year not exactly celebrate grand success. So all of a sudden it happens my favorite song ended up as number one, and lets face it… WOW, who knew anything about Celine Dion back in 1988? The Swiss entry, ”Ne partez pas sans moi” stole the crown this year at the end of the voting, thanks to Yugoslavias jury for some reason agreed with the French singer Gerard Lenorman that his entry was of the same class as ”My way” (”Comme d´habitude”). And I can imagine that the UK singer Scott Fitzgerald was a bit surprised over the outcome. In ans case, not only Celine Dion started her way to success this year, also Lara Fabian entered, but for Luxembourg. So how did my list compare to the final result this year. We had some really good entries but 1988 must be seen as a middle year even if songs like ”Pu og peir”, ”Nauravat Silmät muistetaan”, ”La chica que yo quiro” and ”Ka du se hva jeg sa”. Sweden sent our number one musical star Mr Tommy Körberg who went from the stages of the London musical scene to Eurovision (his second try) and for Swedish media it was all in the bag, Eurovision from Sweden 1989.. It turned out to be very wrong and the Swedish delegation blamed Tommys bad cold and voice problems.

  • Gloaming by Kathleen Jones
Gloaming by Kathleen Jones Throughout the history of Thoroughbred racing there are many exceptional horses who have been held as examples of heroes whose names would live forever. We call them legends. But somehow, over time, the details of their successes have grown foggy until eventually the memory of these once-legendary animals lives only in the rarely-touched paper leaves of libraries. One horse in particular who deserves a better fate than anonymity is an Australian-bred gelding named Gloaming. At a time when Americans were celebrating the exploits of Man o'War and Exterminator, Australian and New Zealand race fans were going crazy for Gloaming. He won from 4 furlongs to a mile and half, setting time records at any distance. At one point his streak of victories had reached nineteen in a row. From ages 3 to 9 he began in 67 races, and won 57 of those. He was 2nd on nine other occasions. The one race in which he failed to run either first or second was a race at age 3 in which he fell. Gloaming was entirely of British descent, and was inbred 4x4 to Two Thousand Guineas runner-up, Sterling. He also carried duplications of Bend Or, Galopin, and Rosebery in his pedigree. The racing season of 1918/1919 in Australia and New Zealand got off to a slow start owing to an outbreak of influenza which necessitated the closing of several race meetings. So Gloaming's first start was a 9f prep stakes for the AJC Derby. He won his debut by 8 lengths then followed up with a new time record in the Australian Derby.

  • History of Thoroughbred Breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley
Thoroughbred Breeding History in the Upper Hunter Valley Executive Summary The history of thoroughbred breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley dates back to the very early days of settlement with the importation of the TB Stallion ‘Crawford’ to Potter Macqueen’s Segenhoe Stud in 1826. Since then there has been an expanding continuum. In the early 21st century the valley is acknowledged as one of the premier TB breeding areas of the world comparing favourably with both Newmarket UK and Kentucky USA. There have been a number of iterations when one area of the valley or another has reigned supreme. Broadly speaking the region has been divided into at least three geographical clusters: Denman and environs including Widden, Bylong and Baerami Valleys plus Jerrys Plains, Muswellbrook and district, Scone and region with Merriwa and also latterly the Murrurundi/Timor precinct. It might be reasonable to argue that the TB enterprises were gradually squeezed northwards by the encroaching coal mining industry from earlier establishments in the lower Hunter Valley; especially around Maitland. Remarkably the ‘mud map’ of thoroughbred studs in 1900 very closely resembles that for 2016 with ownership the only issue. There is one notable exception: Widden Stud. The Hon James White was the pioneer leviathan owner-breeder in the early days of metropolitan racing in both Sydney and Melbourne. His trail blazing forays included Epsom Derby assault on the august Jockey Club establishment in England. During the latter part of the 19th century the Thompson family of the Widden & Bylong Valleys were preeminent. Brothers W & F. A. Moses sustained a brief but exceptionally productive period at ‘Arrowfield’ (now ‘Coolmore’) near Jerrys Plains early in the 20th century.
