Dear Applicant,

I want to take the opportunity to thank you for your interest in the post of Headteacher at our school. We are a committed team (Staff, Governors and parents) who are passionate about ensuring that all our children achieve their potential and leave the school confident learners.

As a team, we have worked hard to ensure that there are systems and processes in place to deliver the improved outcomes for our children. We are constantly striving to achieve our vision. We have ensured staff are supported to deliver a strong curriculum which allows children to make good progress and meet age related expectations

We want our new Head to bring a new perspective and ideas to help our school maintain our current Good standard and ultimately move towards being Outstanding. We feel the role offers a real opportunity for continuing the professional development of the post holder, something as a governing body we are keen to support and encourage.

We recognise the importance of ensuring that all our staff continue to develop their professional skills and careers. We fully support and encourage the need to train and equip our team with skills that will achieve both improved outcomes for our children as well as the team’s development.

You should be aware that the vacancy for a Head has arisen due to our current Head, Antonia Drysdale, leaving us after 6 years of successful leadership to further her career and take up another Headship role which will continue to develop her skills – she came to the school as a deputy and we nurtured her talent and skills to ensure that she achieved her potential – we would like the opportunity to support you in your career goals.

Please find within this pack more information about our school as well as an application form, job description and the person specification against which all applications will be assessed. We strongly encourage you to visit the school to meet our children and team and to fully appreciate what we have to offer. Please contact Ali, our Business Manager, to arrange this.

The deadline for applications is 9am on Thursday 1st December with interviews and assessment days planned for 6th &/or 7th December. I look forward to receiving your application form and letter.

Best Wishes Jenny Volp Chair of Governors 3

The location

Situated only 20 minutes from , very close to the ancient town of St Ives and with excellent transport links, Fenstanton and Hilton School serves the two villages of Fenstanton and Hilton (though we do have children from elsewhere through parental choice). We have a reputation for high standards, a caring attitude and an ability to support pupils with special needs.

The School

The number on roll is currently 264 with the school divided into 9 classes. We have mixed age classes and are organised into Learning Zones. Each Zone has a Zone Leader and we are committed to maintaining distributive leadership. This is a successful school having been judged as Good at our last Ofsted in October 2013. We are never complacent and constantly strive to improve our offer for pupils. As a school the staff, pupils, parents and governors all have very high expectations of pupil behaviour. Allied to this we expect the highest standards of teaching, learning and pupil attainment. Although pupils’ learning needs to be challenging we believe that it should also be a joy in itself, it is vital that their learning is relevant and fun and incorporates their personal as well as academic needs. We have a lovely learning environment with extensive grounds which are fully used to enhance the children’s learning.

Supporting the school are a dedicated, professional and supportive group of Governors who work successfully to challenge and support the school. Also supporting us is our dynamic and energetic PTA, who arrange wonderful events for children and families to enjoy. They raised over £10,000 last year for the school.

Teaching and Learning

Fenstanton and Hilton School has a settled and committed staffing team who strive to improve their own teaching as well as the pupils’ learning. Like our children, we aim to be “passionate about learning”. Our Teaching Assistants are very skilled, highly trained and experienced; they support Quality First Teaching, individual pupils and have a key role in ensuring the best outcomes for pupils. All members of the staff take on a variety of leadership roles and willingly support colleagues. We would welcome any expertise which a new Leader of our team would bring.

During the year the school arranges many memorable activities and events from poets, authors, Egyptian, Victorian or Roman living history days, Arts weeks, plays and musical performances, theatre groups, live music groups, sports events, after school clubs, candle-lit carol services in church as well as day and residential trips.

The school has a very strong ethos of which the pupils are very proud. We are a group of Rainbow Learners: our rules are simple: Be kind; be Respectful; be Safe and be Responsible for your learning and behaviour. This is supported by our Relationships and Behaviour Policy where we reward and praise both the academic and social successes of our pupils and also support those who need it.

The school is proud that it actively listens to and supports suggestions from the pupils. Pupil Voice is very strong and the School Council play a key role in school events and priorities. Each year the school raises well in excess of £1000 for charity.

The Cambridgeshire Context

There are around 127,744 children and young people under the age of 18 years living in the county, which represents 21% of the total population. Just over 10% are entitled to free school meals (10.8%), which is below the national average of 18.2%. The proportion taking free school meals as at January 2012 was 11.6% (nursery and state funded primary schools) 9.2% (state funded secondary schools) and 30.0% (special schools).

Children and young people of school age from minority ethnic groups account for 10.8% of the total population, compared with 16.3% in the country as a whole. The largest minority ethnic group is Asian (3.5%). Travellers of Gypsy Roma and Irish heritage account for 0.7% of the school age population compared with a national average of 0.3%.

Cambridgeshire is a relatively prosperous county. Our children generally have above average health, educational attainment and life chances. However there are pockets within the county where deprivation levels exceed or equal the national average, particularly in parts of Wisbech, Huntingdon North and the north east of Cambridge City. A particular feature of Cambridgeshire is that deprivation is spread widely across the county. 70% of children living in deprivation do not live in the 30% most deprived wards. Areas of deprivation in Cambridgeshire are characterised by:

• high levels of income deprivation (around one in three children live in families in receipt of benefits);

• a high proportion of parents/carers with no formal educational qualifications; and

• a high proportion of families living in rented social housing some of which is overcrowded. Children living in these areas are exposed to multiple social deprivations which adversely affect their health, educational attainment and life chances.

Cambridgeshire is a rapidly growing county. The 0-19 population of Cambridgeshire is expected to increase by 16.8% between now and 2031, although not evenly across the county. Some districts will see a decrease. , which currently has the joint highest child population, is facing the greatest decrease of 2,200. In contrast, child population is expected to rise by almost 10,300 in Cambridge City (from 25,900 in 2010 to 36,200 in 2031) and by 8,500 in south Cambridgeshire in the same period. East Cambridgeshire and Fenland face increases of 3,100 and 4,300 respectively. Births are expected to increase by 6.8% between now and 2031.

The number of children subject to a child protection plan at the time of the inspection was 201 and there were 2,594 children in need receiving support from the children’s social care service.

Dear Candidate

Fenstanton and Hilton Primary is a special place in which to be a leader. It has been my privilege to work with fantastic staff, governors and parents since 2005. Everyone here is passionate about doing the best for children; people often go the extra mile to make sure children get what they need. We do strive to “enrich the whole person” and live up to our shared values of kindness, respect, safety and responsibility. I have found the school full of laughter and fun, with staff who are willing and eager to learn; all visitors comment on the welcoming atmosphere and “buzz” as they walk through the door. If you come to work here, you will find good management systems, established distributed leadership and an SMT who will support you (but also use their initiative), teachers who are willing to innovate (but also implement the pedagogical non- negotiables), support staff of the highest calibre, committed Governors and a PTA who plan wonderful activities and also raise in excess of £10,000 per annum for the school.

I believe that a new Head here will have excellent opportunities for professional development and the school, due to local building projects and rerouting of the A14, is due to expand. I have enjoyed close links with our Cluster Heads and they will support you if you wish. We meet regularly for formal meetings, but also socially. Support from the Local Authority has been very good. The children are fantastic; wise, full of life and enthusiasm about learning. We aren’t perfect, but are always striving to improve. In addition, we have excellent links to the communities of Fenstanton and Hilton and are involved in joint Art, Cultural, Music and Sporting events.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Fenstanton; I will be moving on from a school in good shape, but with loads of potential and opportunities. I very much hope that you will apply and, if appointed, share the same sense of community, fun and teamwork as I have done.

With best wishes

Antonia Drysdale
