UAC NEWSLETTER February, 2010 Dear brothers and sisters in the Union, As promised in last months’ issue of the UAC Newsletter we are very happy to bring you some short reports or reflections on celebrations of the Epiphany in Pallottine communities in Germany and Brazil. It is very good to see that the practice is growing and developing but in a creative way that is in tune with the reality in each area. 1. Epiphany 2010 A Triduum of the Epiphany in Limburg, Germany The Pallottine communities issued an invitation to participate in a triduum in preparation for the feast of the Epiphany. During three days they celebrated solemn Vesper Services in three different churches of Limburg. An average of 50 persons took part in each of the services. The first Vespers took place in the church of St. Marien, which is a parish administered by the Pallottines. Here Sr. Gertrud Meiser, SAC spoke about the messianic expectation of the prophet Isaiah. His vision is a source of encouragement for the Church of today and for the Pallottine family for daily living. Fr. Alexander Holzbach, SAC spoke at the second service which was held in the Church of St. Anna in the center of Limburg. He acknowledged that current parameters for the perception of Christian life may be different from those of the time of St. Paul or Vincent Pallotti. However, as Christians inspired by St. Vincent, we must be experienced as and seen to be people of confidence and hope so that persons who are interested in religious matters may know whom they can approach. -

She earned a B.A. at Simon Fraser University in 2001, an M.A. from Simon Fraser University in 2003 under the supervision of Martin Kitchen, and an A.M. from Brown University in 2004. She has a forthcoming article in Contemporary European History entitled “Catholic Priests as German Soldiers: Georg Werthmann and the Military Chaplaincy under the Third Reich.” She has taught an array of classes, including her own European History survey class at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and a seminar on Holocaust narratives. She was also involved for two years as a research assistant with the multidisciplinary and international project Borderlands: Ethnicity, Identity, and Violence in the Shatter-Zone of Empires Since 1848, co-directed by Omer Bartov at the Watson Institute for International Studies. -

Alvis Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, St Meinrad, IN 47577, USA; [email protected] Abstract: Despite is global popularity in recent decades, the Divine Mercy devotion has received scant scrutiny from scholars. This article examines its historical development and evolving appeal, with an eye toward how this nuances our understanding of Catholic devotions in the “age of Vatican II.” The Divine Mercy first gained popularity during World War II and the early Cold War, an anxious era in which many Catholic devotions flourished. The Holy Office prohibited the active promotion of the Divine Mercy devotion in 1958, owing to a number of theological concerns. While often linked with the decline of Catholic devotional life generally, the Second Vatican Council helped set the stage for the eventual rehabilitation of the Divine Mercy devotion. The 1958 prohibition was finally lifted in 1978, and the Divine Mercy devotion has since gained a massive following around the world, benefiting in particular from the enthusiastic endorsement of Pope John Paul II. The testimonies of devotees reveal how the devotion’s appeal has changed over time. Originally understood as a method for escaping the torments of hell or purgatory, the devotion developed into a miraculous means to preserve life and, more recently, a therapeutic tool for various forms of malaise. Rene Laurentin, ever at tentive to the roots of words, writes that "pilgrimage comes from the Latin peregrinus" which means stranger, "for the pil grim is a traveler: He has left his home in order to come to a country (or a place) that is not his own.... Etymologically, the word has as its root per ager: one who goes through a field, or again per eger, one who goes across a frontier, in doing which the traveler becomes a stranger, in a country that is no longer his own."t In 1 Peter2:11 and Hebrews 11:13-16, we are called strangers and pilgrims;2 refugees in this world;3 beloved strangers in exile;4 visitors and pilgrims;5 aliens and exiles.6 The pilgrim's travel here on earth anticipates the final destination. -

Niehaus: Schoenstatt's Marian Spirituality ASPECTS OF SCHOENSTATI''S MARIAN SPIRITUALITY Fr.]onathan Niehaus* Pope John Paul II chose his pontificate's twenty-ftfth year to challenge the Church "to contemplate the face of Christ" both in the Rosary and the Eucharist. This contemplation is an es sential and integral part of the larger program announced at the conclusion of the Great Jubilee in his Apostolic Letter Novo Millennia Ineunte. 1 In the encyclical "The Eucharist in the Church," the pope states states that "To contemplate the face of Christ, and to contemplate it with Mary, is the 'program' which I have set before the Church at the dawn of the third millennium, summoning her 'to put out into the deep' on the sea of history with the enthusiasm of the new evangelization:'2 From the very beginning, Schoenstatt has "contemplated the face of Christ" not only with Mary, but through Mary and for Mary. -
