Al obtener nuestra licenciatura en Geografía e Historia (sección de Historia, especialidad de Historia Antigua) y realizar la Memoria de Licenciatura, por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, el Catedrático D. José M~ Blázquez Martínez, nos brindó la magnífica oportunidad de poder colaborar en el Corpus de Mosaicos de España, Proyecto de Investigación que, bajo su dirección, venía realizándose, igual que en la actualidad, en el antiguo Instituto “Rodrigo Caro”, hoy Departamento de Historia Antigua y Arqueología, del CSIC. Ligados, en un principio, al equipo del Proyecto por un contrato de los denominados de carácter específico y de urgencia durante 1983 y 1984, estos dos años fueron decisivos en nuestra aproximación al estudio de los mosaicos romanos, habiendo sido fundamentales para la posterior iniciación de la tesis doctoral que, gracias a una beca de Formación de Personal Investigador de Cajamadrid e inscrita en el marco del Proyecto, comenzamos en 1985. Tras los cuatro años de la citada beca, en el transcurso de los cuales avanzó nuestra formación y el estado de nuestra investigación, otra beca de FPI, adscrita a Proyecto, esta vez del MEC, nos ha permitido concluir esta tesis doctoral. Es nuestro deseo destacar que durante todos estos años y en la actualidad, tanto el magisterio científico como el apoyo personal del Profesor Dr. D. José M~ Blázquez Martínez y de los miembros del equipo del Proyecto Corpus de Mosaicos de España, especialmente la Dra.     Quaestiones Oralitatis II 1 (2016) Małgorzata Zadka Uniwersytet Wrocławski LISTS AND REGISTERS IN WRITTEN AND ORAL TRADITION Introduction The differences between speech and writing1 have been a subject of scholarly interest for many decades. These forms of communication differ from each other in the construction of a message, in the durability and stability of the communica- tion, and in its dependence on the context. Speech is immate- rial, ephemeral, connected to the specific context of its emer- gence; it also enables us to interact and to receive feedback information. Writing, on the contrary, is available physically, is durable, but is also detached from its context and prevents us from getting a direct response. It has an impact on the message’s construction – written records have to contain all the necessary information which can replace and supplement the context. The written text has to be precise and to speak for itself. Therefore, although lacking the possibility of using non-linguistic tools (such as gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice, etc.), they may seem to be more complete than oral utterance.1 The aim of this article is to show that ancient lists, Among the extensive literature, it is worth mentioning: LURIA 1976; GOODY 1977; ONG 1982; GOODY 1986; HAVELOCK; OLSON 1994. 142 Maªgorzata Zadka registers and catalogues are derived from both the oral and written traditions, and their discrete nature can be explained by their separate origins. Acontius, Milanion, and Gallus: Vergil, Ecl. 10.52-61 Abstract In the rambling sequence of thoughts in Ecl. 10.31-69 that expresses the troubled state of the lovesick Gallus, Vergil depicts his friend as proposing to abandon elegy for bucolic poetry, and to take up a pair of activities presumably related to this change. These activities--carving love-messages on trees and hunting--are to some extent typical of the unrequited literary, especially pastoral, lover. But these projects may have more than just a general amatory import. It has long been held that both motifs had previously appeared in Gallus' own love poetry. More recently, D. 0. Ross has refined this theory, arguing that Gallus in his Amores had not merely used these general motifs, but had in fact adduced specific ts ories in which they appear as exempla to characterize his own amatory/literary situation. According to Ross, Vergil is alluding here to two passages in which Gallus had identified himself with two famous lovers of literary myth, namely Acontius and Milanion.

    Traditional Language and the Women in the Hesiodic Catalogue of Women I. Μ. Cohen The expression ὴ’ οἵη, which introduces the stories of several heroines in the Hesiodic Catalogue of Women, must have played a significant role in the poem. In its plural form it serves as an alternative title, and early commenta­ tors used it to describe individual segments of the whole.1 The phrase, moreover, is peculiar to this Hesiodic work and is not found in the Theogony, the Works and Days, nor any of the Homeric poems.2 Quotations cited by ancient sources have suggested to some scholars that the phrase was a sign­ post, meant to signal a story about the love between a mortal woman and a god.3 Those who believed that the Catalogue was created by the mutual attraction of poems with similar themes understood the words to be a tool for its expansion, by affirming the essential unity of the subjects of all poems 1 For example, the scholia on Pindar’s Pyth. 9.6 (2.221.12 Drachmann) refer to the ῆ’ οἵη of Kyrene (fr. 215). The poem is called Ήοῖαι by Hesychius (η 650), Eunapius (vit. soph. 6.6-10), Pausanias (10.31.3, seeapp. crit. adfr. 25.12), Athenaeus (10.32 p. 428c, see fr. 239), the scholia on Soph.
