The first horse to highlight ’s excellence as a sire was his spectacular son Calyx. A highly impressive 5- length debut winner at Newmarket on June 9, Calyx reappeared ten days later as one of 23 runners in the Gr.2 Coventry S. Despite having to race on the slower part of the course from his high draw, he burst well clear of his group and won well. The next four across the line, which all raced in the other group, included the future Group winners (3xGr.1), Sergei Prokofiev and Shine So Bright.

Calyx was similarly impressive on his return to action at three in the Gr.3 Commonwealth Cup Trial where, once , he displayed an explosive turn of foot. The Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup appeared to be at Calyx’s mercy but he suffered a pastern injury when second to in the Gr.2 Sandy Lane S. and his career was over.

Calyx and his parents, Kingman and Helleborine, collectively won seven of their eight juvenile starts, the only defeat coming when Helleborine was beaten by the future Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Misty For Me in the Gr.1 Prix Boussac. Helleborine had previously won the Gr.3 Prix d’Aumale by five lengths from the future Gr.1 winner . Helleborine’s older sister won the Gr.1 Sprint Cup and went on to produce the fast and precocious filly Fair Eva, winner of the Gr.3 Princess Margaret S.

Calyx’s pedigree is free of Sadler’s Wells, and . Kingman is already showing promise with daughters of GALILEO, siring a Gr.3 winner and a Listed winner in his first crop, and Calyx’s family has produced a smart 2yo to FRANKEL. Calyx could be a useful means of injecting more precocity into mares by , NEW APPRAOCH and . Kingman’s Gr.2-placed American performers Jazzique and Public Sector are out of daughters of SADLER’S WELLS and . SADLER’S WELLS mares are the second dams of Kingman’s smart sons Headman and Roseman. SINGSPIEL is broodmare sire of Kingman’s Gr.3 2yo winner Boomer.

PIVOTAL mares are likely to be ideal for Calyx. Kingman has already sired the speedy Poetry and the smart Roseman from daughters of , which have enjoyed Gr.1 success with Calyx’s grandsire and with another of Invincible Spirit’s sons.

GREEN DESERT will be back in the fourth generation of Calyx’s progeny. Kingman’s record suggests that Calyx could shine with a second line, as Kingman’s Gr.2 winner Fearless King and Gr.3 winner Chachnak are inbred 3x4, with their second line coming through daughters of . Also Kingman’s speedy Group-placed Listed winner Alligator Alley is out of a mare and Listed winner Raakib Alhawa has a dam by . They are therefore inbred 3x3 and 3x4 to GREEN DESERT.

The DANEHILL branch is also making its mark with Kingman. His versatile classic-winning son has a dam by , his Gr.3 winners Cormorant and Chachnak are respectively out of mares by and . The smart Sangarius has a second dam by DANEHILL. Calyx can be expected to do well with mares by Danehill’s sons, such as DANSILI, DANEHILL DANCER, , , ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, DANETIME, CAMACHO and CLODOVIL. Daughters of KODIAC produce 4x3 to that influential mare .

Kingman’s Gr.3-winning son Sinawann has a dam by . Kingman already has Group-placed performers out of mares by and his son ACCLAMATION. This line is well qualified to help Calyx sire Royal Ascot 2yos.

There is no obstacle to adding more of the MR PROSPECTOR blood which has done so well with Calyx’s grandsire Invincible Spirit. Kingman’s top-class miler has a dam by . Kingman has a Listed winner from a KINGMAMBO mare, a Gr.2 winner from a KING’S BEST mare, a Listed-winning filly out of a LEMON DROP KID mare and a Gr.2-placed winner out of an ARCHIPENKO mare. Calyx should suit these KINGMAMBO line mares.

Invincible Spirit has 13% SWs, including four Group winners, out of MACHIAVELLIAN mares and Kingman has talented performers out of mares by Machiavellian’s sons STREET CRYand . Calyx would be interesting with daughters of successful with dams by MACHIAVELLIAN, especially as ZOFFANY, and will reinforce Calyx’s remarkable juvenile ability.
