“Be Good to Yourself” (Perry/Cain) Runnin' out of selfcontrol Gettin' close to an overload Up against a no win situation Shoulder to shoulder, push and shove I'm hangin' up my boxin' gloves I'm ready for a long vacation Be good to yourself when, nobody else will Oh be good to yourself You're walkin' a high wire, caught in a cross fire Oh be good to yourself When you can't give no more They want it all but you gotta say no I'm turnin' off the noise that makes me crazy Lookin' back with no regrets To forgive is to forget I want a little piece of mind to turn to Be good to yourself when, nobody else will Oh be good to yourself You're walkin' a high wire, caught in a cross fire Oh be good to yourself Be good to yourself when, nobody else will Journey Formed over thirty years ago as a way to get guitarist Neal Schon more recognition, Journey became the number one selling band in Columbia Records history (a record it is rumored they still hold). Though the band has had a tumultuous history (various members and no less than six lead singers), the band has recorded some of the most recognizable anthems in rock. “Be Good to Yourself” appears on their album, Raised on Radio. Originally, most of the band’s songs were sung by Greg Rollie (also played keyboards until Jonathan Cain took over) and Neal Schon (founder and still lead guitarist). Rollie felt that it was too difficult to keep playing keyboards and hold up the lead singer position so a man named Robert Fleischman was hired to take over. Fleischman only toured with the band and it wasn’t until Journey released some “lost” tracks on a later greatest hits collection that fans ever got to hear his voice. After Fleischman left, a man named Steve Perry joined the band and the rest, as they say, is history. Perry helped the band rise to nearinstant stardom and it seemed that nothing could keep them from becoming the most popular band of all time. Unfortunately, Perry decided to embark on a solo career and left the band. Journey broke up and its members went their separate ways. After ten years, Journey reunited with a new album (the single from that album, “When You Love a Woman”, was nominated for an Emmy for best music video) and a new tour. Sadly, Perry broke his hip while hiking in Hawaii, keeping him from returning to tour. The band waited two years before they finally decided to go on without Perry. They found Steve Augeri (pronounced very close to “Perry”) who was a member of a band that broke up after critics complained they sounded too much like Journey. Augeri was working at a GAP store in New York when he got the call from Neal Schon to audition for the band. Augeri joined the band in 1999. In 2006, Journey went back on the road for the sixth time in as many years along with arena rock champions, Def Leopard. Before the tour got under way, Steve Augeri reported pain in his throat and it was discovered he had a chronic throat infection that required him not to sing. He left the tour almost immediately and a man named Jeff Scott Soto, who had performed with Schon before, joined the tour. Soto sang most of the songs but drummer Dean Castronovo handled the power ballads. Soto was finally named the band’s lead singer in December of 2006 but by February was out of a job. In late 2007, Neal Schon was looking for a new lead singer when he discovered The Zoo, a cover band known for singing 80s hits, on YouTube. He almost passed on the band until he heard their lead singer, Arnel Pineda, sing Journey’s “Faithfully.” He was so impressed, he signed Pineda and they have since released a new album entitled Revelations. The album sold over 100,000 copies in its first week! Incredibly, Pineda homeless and literally singing for his food when Schon discovered him and asked him to join Journey. When asked what he did with his money after becoming the lead singer of Journey, Pineda revealed that he used the money to start a charity to help childern living on the streets. As of 2013, Arnel Pineda is still the lead singer of the band and every bit as humble. Essay Response Directions: I want to see how much of essay writing you’ve retained over the summer but make sure you keep a few things in mind: 1. The basic essay has three paragraphs: introduction, body paragraph(s), and a conclusion. 2. Every introduction contains a Thesis Statement—your opinion of the subject stated as a fact that you will support in your entire essay. 3. Each body paragraph should start with a topic sentence that states what that paragraph will be about. Each line in the paragraph should support the topic sentence by either stating your interpretation (analysis) or providing a quote (textual detail) from the song. 4. Your conclusion restates the Thesis Statement and wraps everything up. This is also when you provide solutions to the problem presented in your essay or when you urge your reader to learn from what you’ve written. Conclusions are not the place to introduce brand new evidence or ideas! Prompt Write an essay response to the following statement: Each of us have to remember to treat ourselves fairly but too often we forget to do so. You may choose to describe a time when you did not treat yourself fairly. What happened? What was unfair about how you treated yourself? How might you handle things differently in the future? You may also use this essay to discuss the concept of being good to ourselves in a more general, worldly sense or maybe you want to write an essay about someone you know who does not treat themselves well. You are free to explore with this essay. Write until the end of the period. You will not be penalized for not finishing the essay. However, I’m looking to see what you learned about essay writing last year so that should tell you that a one sentence or one paragraph response is not appropriate. Spelling and grammar are important and please try to minimize typos. Internet type (l8r, brb, lol, etc.) is not allowed. Your essay is due, typed, as a PDF by the end of the period. You will turn it into the same folder in eBackpack you found this handout. Don’t stress!!! .
