Lincoln’s Forgotten Middle Years Abstract It would be difficult to find two books on Abraham Lincoln published in the same year and yet more unalike in their conclusions than Sidney Blumenthal’s Wrestling with His Angel (the second installment in his multi- volume survey of Lincoln’s “political life”) and Elizabeth Brown Pryor’s Six Encounters with Lincoln. Blumenthal’s narrative of Lincoln’s “wilderness years,” from 1849 to 1856, begins with Lincoln at the lowest pitch of his professional life, returning to Illinois from his solitary term in Congress, an embarrassment to his fellow Whigs, only to rise, phoenix-like, from the firestorm of the controversy over slavery in “Bleeding Kansas.” Pryor’s Lincoln, on the other hand, makes his debut a week after his inauguration as president, in what should have been his greatest moment of political triumph, only to be exposed as a bumbling, awkward poseur incompetently stumbling from pillar to post. -

Clara Barton: The Nation’s Prime Precedent of Calm in the Center of the Battlefield Dani Martinez Senior Division Historical Paper Word Count: 2500 1 “I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them.” 1 The bloody events of the Civil War brought on countless adversities that provoked the demise of thousands of American soldiers. Injuries on the battlefield early on in the war proved to be the leading cause of death for soldiers, as the introduction of nurses was not initially effective in lowering the soldiers’ rising death rate. As the fate of American Union soldiers took a turn for the worse, the servitude and organizations created by Clara Barton paved the way for American achievement and success. The initiative and humanitarian measures made by the inspiring Clara Barton during the premise of events before, during, and after the Civil War in the United States, cemented her as an admirable role model for women in the nineteenth century. By putting her fellow citizens before her own needs, as well as through her service and establishment of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton introduced a sense of security in the eye of the storm that was raging war. Barton was born on December 25, 1821 in North Oxford, Massachusetts. As a young adolescent, she was “small, slender, and striking...with silky brown hair...a round face, a wide expressive mouth, and exquisite, dark brown eyes.” 2 All the family members she grew up with were of significantly older age, so much that she referred to herself as 1 Quote said by Clara Barton. -

Thanks to all of you who helped make it a meaningful and memorable one for our country. We hope our efforts have helped Americans understand the connection between these two epic periods of time as a continuous march toward freedom and equality for all–a march that continues still today. Along the way, perhaps the National Park Service learned something about itself, as well. When we first began planning for this commemorative journey, there were several Civil War parks that had difficultly acknowledging slavery as the cause of the war. Both Civil War sites and civil rights sites questioned whether a combined “Civil War to Civil Rights” Commemoration would water down and weaken each. -

Essential Civil War Curriculum | Marian Moser Jones, Clara Barton | December 2015 Clara Barton By Marian Moser Jones, University of Maryland College Park When the bloody and bedraggled Massachusetts Militia volunteers arrived at the Washington train depot on the evening of April 19, 1861, following the deadly Baltimore riot, they were met by a group of local residents eager to help them. Among these was a 39-year-old patent clerk named Clara Barton, who recognized some of these men as former pupils from her earlier years as a Massachusetts schoolteacher. The opening salvos of the war had occurred only a week earlier, with the secessionists’ firing on Fort Sumter in South Carolina. President Lincoln had responded by calling up 75,000 state militia troops to Washington to protect the nation’s capital from Confederate attacks. The Massachusetts militia had assembled, like those in Pennsylvania, New York, and other states, and headed to Washington by train. But in Baltimore, these soldiers had been forced to march across town in order to change trains, and a mob of residents sympathetic to the secessionist cause had followed them, pelting them with paving stones and other objects, and blocking their way toward the train. In the ensuing melee, 36 soldiers had been wounded and four killed, along with 12 civilians. 1 News of the Baltimore riot had quickly reached Washington via telegraph, sending Barton and others hurrying to the station to greet the soldiers and offer assistance. Finding the wounded without any medical care, and others stripped of their packs and equipment, Barton quickly arranged for the most seriously wounded soldiers to be nursed and lodged at her sister’s home in Washington. -

Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia By J. Tracy Power, Newberry College The Army of Northern Virginia is the best-known and most successful of all the Confederate armies in the American Civil War. Its mark on the popular consciousness is so strong that many people believe that it was the Confederate Army; that General Robert E. Lee was the ranking Confederate general for the entire war; and that Appomattox, where it surrendered to its Union foes in the Army of the Potomac in April 1865, was the place where the war ended. Once the Confederate capital moved to Richmond, less than one hundred miles from Washington, D.C., Virginia became the major arena of the war in the east. The Union Army of the Potomac focused its efforts against the Confederate capital and the army that defended it. The Confederate Army of the Potomac, commanded briefly by General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard and subsequently by General Joseph Eggleston Johnston, formed the nucleus of the Army of Northern Virginia and was officially given that name in the fall of 1861. On June 1, 1862, after Johnston was seriously wounded at Seven Pines, Robert E. Lee succeeded him. He would command the army for the rest of the war, and they would win the greatest Confederate victories together. Most Americans, and many others, are familiar with a version of the Civil War in which Lee and his gallant but outmatched army play an essentially heroic but ultimately tragic part, one in which the extraordinary bond forged between them both highlights and humanizes their successes and their failures. -

A large majority will contend that he did, while others may say he did not. Regardless of what the common belief is, African Americans were freed from centuries of forced bondage. Scholars have spent a countless amount of time researching and debating this same topic because the Emancipation Proclamation did not free all of the slaves. The complex details surrounding Lincoln’s emancipation are not generally known, so there is a common misconception that this document freed all the slaves. Eric Foner, in his book, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery, reminds us that the “proclamation had no bearing on the nearly half million slaves in the four border states and West Virginia. It applied only to the Confederacy and almost exclusively to areas outside Union control. It exempted a number of areas occupied by the Union army. So, the proclamation did not apply to approximately 800,000 slaves in areas such as Tidewater, Virginia, several parishes in southern Louisiana and the entire state of Tennessee.”1 Few American History curriculums and textbooks teach that Emancipation Proclamation “accomplished nothing because it was intended to accomplish nothing ‘beyond its propaganda value’.”2 As a 1 Foner, Eric, 2010, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery, New York, W.W. H-CivWar Author Interview--James Oakes (The Crooked Path to Abolition) Part 1 Discussion published by Niels Eichhorn on Thursday, May 20, 2021 Hello H-CivWar Readers: Today we feature James Oakes to talk about his new The Crooked Path to Abolition: Abraham Lincoln and the Antislavery Constitution, published by W. W. Norton in January 2021. James Oakes is a Distinguished Professor of History at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He has published The Ruling Race (1982); Slavery and Freedom: An Interpretation of the Old South (1990); The Radical and the Republican: Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and the Triumph of Antislavery Politics (2007); and Freedom National: The Destruction of Slavery in the United States, 1861–1865 (2012). To start, Jim, you have written quite a few books, how did you decide to write one on Lincoln and slavery and the Constitution? JO: I never expected, or planned, to write this book. Do we really need another book on Lincoln? In some ways, Crooked Path was—like emancipation—the product of contingent circumstances. I had written an essay that is now the last chapter of the book, on Lincoln and the origins of the Thirteenth amendment. My editor read it and suggested I turn it into a short book. I had already published an essay on Lincoln and race that seemed relevant, and I was finishing up another essay on Lincoln and emancipation in the first year of the war. So I was sitting on three essays that would become chapters when my editor made the suggestion.
