16 FAST FORWARD TO COLLEGE NCMHS students can earn college credits BEFORE college!

Interested in the Academic Excellence Program at LSUS or earning an Associate’s Degree in General Studies BEFORE you leave high school? Ask us how!

AVERAGE COLLEGE CLASS COSTS $700+

Three ways to leave high school with college credit and save money: Advanced Placement, CLEP, and Dual Enrollment.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) North Caddo Magnet High School offers Advanced Placement courses to all our students. Each year, we look to add more AP and Pre-AP courses, depending on interest. These courses are taught by highly qualified teachers who use AP Course Descriptions as their guides. These courses are rigorous and challenging and offer the following benefits: • Helps students develop analytical thinking skills needed to be successful in college • Helps students develop college-level academic skills, especially in writing • Prepares students for the rigor and independence of college • Offers an opportunity for students to earn three to six college credits – valued at $500-$1000 • Advances students in their college class load allowing them to either finish early or explore additional concentrations • Boosts students’ academic record and sets them apart from other college applicants

According to research, 31% of colleges and universities consider a student's AP experience when making decisions about which students will receive scholarships. Eighty-five percent of selective colleges and universities report that a student's AP experience favorably impacts admissions decisions.

Requirements for AP classes: • Parents, students, and other stakeholders sign a contract of understanding and intent. • Students are exposed all year to a rigorous and challenging curriculum. • Students take AP exams in May. • A fee of $92 per exam must be paid before the exam date. (We raise funds to help students pay for this.) • Students must score a 3, 4, or 5 on the exam to receive college credit. (varies with universities)

* Students who take and pass at least 3 AP courses could earn an AP Scholar Award. *

We currently have 114 students enrolled in an AP course at NCMHS!

AP COURSES IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR 9th GRADERS: AP Human Geography AP Environmental Science OTHER AP COURSES OFFERED AP American Government AP Psychology AP English Language & Literature AP English Language & Composition AP Art History AP Biology AP Studio Art 17 COLLEGE LEVEL EXAMINATION PROGRAM (CLEP)

The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) helps students receive college credit for what they already know, for a fraction of the cost of a college course. Developed by the College Board, CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program, available at more than 2,900 colleges and universities.

Students do not have to be enrolled in a particular class in order to CLEP test in one or more of the 33 exams. The tests are taken on the computer, and scores are generated immediately.

North Caddo Magnet High School IS a testing site, which means students can take the test with us when they and their teachers have determined they are ready!

Average college class = $700 CLEP = $80 (We raise funds to help students pay for this)

Visit https://clep.collegeboard.org/ for more information.

We currently have over 50 students who will be CLEP testing in April.

DUAL ENROLLMENT

Average college class = $700 Dual Enrollment = FREE -up to $150 Cost depends on course(s) taken

Dual Enrollment allows students to earn college credit at one or more local colleges while enrolled in classes at North Caddo Magnet High School. Participating colleges are:

BPCC-Bossier Parish Community College Northwest Louisiana Technical College SUSLA-Southern University in Shreveport Louisiana State University in Shreveport Louisiana Tech University

Qualifying students enrolled in academic classes as well as career and technical (CTE) classes may participate in dual enrollment. Students simultaneously earn the credit for the class at North Caddo and the partnering college—a 2 for 1 deal! Participation is voluntary and credits may or may not transfer to other colleges.

For the 2020-2021 school year, students will earn over 80 college hours saving students and parents around $17,000 in tuition! Most of these credits are earned with absolutely NO COST to the student or parent.

Once dual enrollment students complete the course at North Caddo, they will have a college transcript on file with the participating college and can be well on their way to reaching their postsecondary education goals.

Visit https://www.louisianabelieves.com/courses/dual-enrollment for more information.

19 WORK-BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Work-based learning includes internships, mentoring, and apprenticeship. It's a way to test-drive a career. WBL is a chance to discover things students can't learn in a classroom, get inside information about the career they are interested in, or simply get a taste of what it's really like on the job.

Benefits to Students. Work-based learning can help students improve academically. It helps them learn how the things they learn in the classroom are connected to the real world. It's also a great way to explore career options.

Benefits to Schools. Work-based learning can improve student motivation, attendance, and graduation rates. It can also improve the school's relationship with the community.

Benefits to Employers. Work-based learning helps employers reduce their recruitment and training costs. It also helps them hire better-prepared employees who understand workplace expectations.

Numerous opportunities are available for NC students to experience WBL through their CTE courses and through the various organizations they can join.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION The Marketing program at North Caddo High School has been designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully enter today’s workforce and obtain a position in a marketing related career field.

Students benefit from this cooperative education program in many ways and it is an excellent method of assisting students in their transition from school to work. Statistics prove that marketing students who go on to college do as well or better than other students in their college work.

Marketing Internship students apply skills learned in the classroom to the workplace. This program is designed to produce entry level to career sustaining employees.

There are a lot of things that make up the person I am today, and I can honestly say that North Caddo High School played a huge role in my journey to become that person. The community I found there was full of so many different types of people, all who supported me and did everything they could to make sure I found success in whatever I chose. It was there that I was given the tools and confidence to pursue an engineering degree in college, something I thought I would never be able to do. I am now a successful engineering student enrolled in the LSU Honors college, and I am able to be that because of the education and support given to me during my time at North Caddo.—Emily Taylor, Class of 2017
