GET 52731 LES MCCANN Layers LP Starting in the late 60s, jazz music started to take an interesting, and very soulful turn. Influenced by the funk of the day – from James Brown to Sly & The Family Stone – the artform, generally not considered a funky musical genre, started to stretch out and fit into the times. It was a fertile era, and to reciprocate, funk, soul and groovy rock fans started to discover accomplished, SIDE A: SONGS FROM BOSTON open-minded jazz artists like Les McCann, whose tunes made Sometimes I Cry sense to their ears, even if bebop hadn’t grabbed them. Let’s Gather This incredible album – long a favorite of forward-thinking Anticipation hip-hop producers and DJs – washes over listeners from the first chords of the incredible album opener, “Sometimes I Cry,” The Dunbar High School Marching Band led by McCann’s array of analog synthesizers and backed by an Soaring (At Dawn) Part I excellent rhythm section (Donald Dean on drums; Ralph McDonald on percussion and Jimmy Rowser on bass). Truth be told, highlights are hard to pick out, but fans never go SIDE B: SONGS FROM MY CHILDHOOD long without returning to the fuzzed-out funk of “The Harlem The Harlem Buck Dance Strut Buck Strut Dance,” “Let’s Play (Til Mom Calls)” and “It Never Stopped In My Hometown.” These keyboard-drenched grooves Interlude sat alongside record stacks brimming with Stevie Wonder, Before I Rest Funkadelic, Marvin Gaye’s 70s soul and, of course, Miles Davis’ space funk experiments of the era (like Bitches Brew). Let’s Play (’Til Mom Calls) It Never Stopped In My Home Town Whether you’re new to Layers or just updating a well-loved and heavily worn-out copy, throw this one on, light one up and lose Soaring (At Dawn) Part II yourself for an hour…or even a couple days, if you have the option. 1 The TENORSAX of GEORGE HOLMES TATE “BUDDY” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Jan. 4, 2020 2 Born: Sherman, Texas, Feb. 22, 1914 Died: Chandler, Arizona, Feb. 10, 2001 Introduction: We became familiar with Buddy Tate very early through his recordings with Count Basie. I met him once, many years ago, at the Molde International Jazz Festival. He was a very kind man, and when he realized I was doing some useful work on ja zz tenor saxophone, he invited me to his hotel room for whisky. We had a very nice time together in the light summer night of Norway! Early history: His brother, a saxophonist, gave Buddy an alto in 1925. Two years later began gigging with McCloud's Night Owls (led by his cousin, trumpeter Roy McCloud). In 1929 played for several months in Wichita Falls with the St. Louis Merrymakers, later that year joined Troy Floyd's Band in San Antonio. Briefly with Gene Coy's Band, then with Terrence Holder's 12 Clouds of Joy from 1930-33. Worked with E. J. Malone and his Rhythm Kings (early 1933), Wesley Smiths' Band, ‘Tan Town Topics’, and Ethel May's Band before joining Count Basie in Little Rock, Arkansas (ca. July 1934). From late 1934 until early summer 1935 with Andy Kirk, played with band at Wiley College, Texas, then long spell with Nat Towles until joining Count Basie in spring 1939. Remained with Basie until September 1948, brief return in early 1949, then for the rest of that year worked mostly with Hot Lips Page, occasionally with Lucky Millinder.

1 The TENORSAX of JEAN BAPTISTE ILLINOIS JACQUET Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Dec. 20, 2020 2 Born: Broussard, Louisiana, Oct. 30, 1919 Died: NYC. July 22, 2004 Introduction: Illinois Jacquet was a tenorsax favourite in our younger days, and his strong extrovert tenorsax performances, whether with JATP or with Count Basie’s orga n, increased our teenager hormones dramatically and was used as good ba ckground for our lovemaking. Later we realized that he was one of the best, original and creative tenorsax player in jazz history, and his active career lasted for m ore tha n sixty years. I met him once, in New York, when he kindly invited me out for an unforgettable day before he drove me to the airport. I repaid some of his hospitality by helping him mowing his grass lane! History: Grew up in Houston, Texas. Played altosax with Lionel Proctor, Bob Cooper and Milton Larkins in the late 1930s, and in 1941 he moved to the West Coast with Floyd Ray's Jump Band. He then joined Lionel Hampton, where he switched to tenorsax and became well known through his solo on Hampton’s “Flying Home” (1942). After leaving Hampton he joined Cab Calloway (1943-44), recorded with Jazz At The Philharmonic and appeared in the film “Jammin’ The Blues” (both in 1944). Worked with Count Basie (1945-46). From 1950 he toured as a principal soloist with JATP and occasionally led his own groups (ref. The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz). 3 ILLINOIS JACQUET SOLOGRAPHY LIONEL HAMPTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA Chi.

  • Anders Boustedts Arkiv
