Anders Boustedts Arkiv Anders Boustedts arkiv Leif Larsson Svenskt visarkiv Dec 2014 Inledning Anders Boustedt föddes på nyårsafton1942 i Stockholm och växte upp i Äppelviken i Bromma. Det första mötet med jazzmusiken var i hemmet där det spelades musik på skiva med Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford m.fl. En stark upplevelse var också att som 11 åring tillsammans med en jämnårig kamrat åka in till Stockholms konserthus och höra Count Basies orkester. Under tonåren fanns musiken hela tiden närvarande, och intresset för jazzen närdes också genom hans 4 år äldre bror skådespelaren och musikern Christer Boustedt (1939-1986). Christer som för en bredare publik blev känd genom sin medverkan i Teatergruppen Oktober och filmen ”Sven Klangs kvintett”. Med sin Tandberg-bandspelare började Anders 1960 att spela in konserter och evenemang med jazzmusik som sändes i radio. Senare har han också under 1980-talet medverkat vid inspelningar gjorda på bl.a. jazzklubben Fashing i Stockholm. Dessa inspelningar tillsammans med inspelningar som kommer från brodern Christer ligger också till grund för detta arkiv. I sitt yrkesverksamma liv har Anders arbetat som ljudtekniker på Sveriges Radio där han också gjort många egna radioprogram såsom Jazzkammaren, Jazzskivan, Blues Ballad and Bebop, Jazz i fokus m.m. Huvuddelen av arkivet består av jazz från 1960-talet och framåt med svenska musiker och grupper som Bernt Rosengren, Börje Fredriksson, Lasse Werner, Staffan Abeleens kvintett, Christer Boustedt, Eje Thelin m.fl. Arkivet inkom till Svenskt visarkiv i omgångar under hösten 2014, där det är fritt tillgängligt för forskning. Guitar, often times, in the history of jazz has been regulated to the role of the rhythm section, if the guitar is involved at all. While the scope of the guitar throughout the history of jazz is not the subject matter of this thesis, the aim is to present, or bring to light Jimmy Raney, a jazz guitarist who I believe, while not the first, may have been among the first to pioneer and challenge these conventions. I have researched Jimmy Raney’s background, and interviewed two people who knew Jimmy Raney: his son, Jon Raney, and record producer Don Schlitten. These two individuals provide a beneficial contrast as one knew Jimmy Raney quite personally, and the other knew Jimmy Raney from a business perspective, creating a greater frame of reference when attempting to piece together Jimmy Raney.

    1 Chapter Seven Cold Commodities: Discourses of Decay and Purity in a Globalised Jazz World Haftor Medbøe Since gaining prominence in public consciousness as a distinct genre in early 20th Century USA, jazz has become a music of global reach (Atkins, 2003). Coinciding with emerging mass dissemination technologies of the period, jazz spread throughout Europe and beyond via gramophone recordings, radio broadcasts and the Hollywood film industry. America’s involvement in the two World Wars, and the subsequent $13 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe as a unified, and US friendly, trading zone further reinforced the proliferation of the new genre (McGregor, 2016; Paterson et al., 2013). The imposition of US trade and cultural products posed formidable challenges to the European identities, rooted as they were in 18th-Century national romanticism. Commercialised cultural representations of the ‘American dream’ captured the imaginations of Europe’s youth and represented a welcome antidote to post-war austerity. This chapter seeks to problematise the historiography and contemporary representations of jazz in the Nordic region, with particular focus on the production and reception of jazz from Norway. Accepted histories of jazz in Europe point to a period of adulatory imitation of American masters, leading to one of cultural awakening in which jazz was reimagined through a localised lens, and given a ‘national voice’. Evidence of this process of acculturation and reimagining is arguably nowhere more evident than in the canon of what has come to be received as the Nordic tone. In the early 1970s, a group of Norwegian musicians, including saxophonist Jan Garbarek (b.1947), guitarist Terje Rypdal (b.1947), bassist Arild Andersen (b.1945), drummer Jon Christensen (b.1943) and others, abstracted more literal jazz inflected reinterpretations of Scandinavian folk songs by Nordic forebears including pianist Jan Johansson (1931-1968), saxophonist Lars Gullin (1928-1976) bassist Georg Riedel (b.1934) (McEachrane 2014, pp.

    Rune Gustafssons arkiv Svenskt visarkiv April 2013 Leif Larsson INLEDNING Rune Gustafsson ( 1933 – 2012 ) hörde sedan början av 1950-talet till en av Sveriges allra främsta jazzmusiker. Han började sin karriär hos trumslagaren Nils-Bertil Dahlander i Göteborg men flyttade några år senare till Stockholm. Under nästan hela fortsatta 1950-talet spelade han där tillsammans med Putte Wickman. Rune träffade 1959 Arne Domnérus som han sedan samarbetade med i många olika sammanhang. Under ett par årtionden var Rune Gustafsson en av våra mest anlitade studiomusiker som genom sin mångsidighet och flexibilitet passade in i de flesta situationer. Rune Gustafsson har bakom sig en rad egna skivor, bl. a. ”Move” som belönades med Orkesterjournalens Gyllene Skiva. Han har även varit involverad i flera andra produktioner som tilldelats denna utmärkelse. Under åren har RG samarbetat med en rad av jazzens internationella storheter, såsom Benny Carter, George Russel, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz och Zoot Sims. Med den sistnämnde gjorde Rune två skivor, den sista ”In A Sentimental Mood” kom att bli Zoot Sims allra sista. Med sin mångsidighet har Rune också varit efterfrågad i många andra musikaliska sammanhang, både i Sverige och stora delar av världen, t.ex. Eng- land, USA, Sydamerika, Ryssland, Japan och Kina. 1997 erhöll Rune det allra första priset ur Albin Hagströms minnesfond i Kungliga musikaliska akademien med motiveringen: ”För en mer än fyrtiofemårig gärning som framstående jazzsolist och mångsidig studio musiker – en beundrad förebild och outtömlig inspirationskälla för generationer svenska elgitarrister. 1998 fick Rune Gustafsson Thore Ehrlings stipendium med motiveringen: ”En av de mångsidigaste musikerna inom svensk populärmusik och vår genom tiderna främste jazzgitarrist”.

  • The Dölerud Johansson Quintet
    Dölerud Johansson Quintet Magnus Dölerud and Dan Johansson formed their quintet in 2016, bringing together some of Sweden’s most accomplished musicians. The members – Dan, Magnus, Torbjörn Gulz, Palle Danielsson and Fredrik Rundqvist – had previously crossed paths in other constellations, but this collaboration has resulted in something truly extra special. The quintet’s collective experience spans a long list of Swedish and International associations, from Keith Jarrett’s legendary European Quartet via the Fredrik Norén Band, which has spawned the careers of so many Swedish musicians over its 32- year history to the Norbotten Big Band, one of the most important jazz institutions in Sweden today, with collaborators like: Tim Hagans, Maria Schnieder, Joe Lovano, Bob Brookmeyer and Kurt Rosenwinkel. The quintet brings music to the stage that reflects that history, combining jazz tradition with the members’ own compositions. During 2017 and 2018, the band toured jazz clubs and festivals in Sweden and Finland, to warm receptions from audiences and reviewers alike. In May 2018, they recorded their first album, Echoes & Sounds, to be released this autumn. Dan Johansson Dan Johansson plays trumpet and flugelhorn in the Norbotten Big Band and is a well-established musician who has – in a career that extends over 30 years -- played with both the Swedish and International jazz elite. He became a member of the Norbotten Big Band while still a student and has played with the band since 1986. There he’s had the privilege to perform with figures like Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, Joey Calderazzo, Jeff “Tain” Watts and Bob Berg. On top of his work with the big band, he’s played in a wide variety of smaller groups that have included: Håkan Broström.
