  • Norway – Music and Musical Life
Norway2BOOK.book Page 273 Thursday, August 21, 2008 11:35 PM Chapter 18 Norway – Music and Musical Life Chapter 18 Norway – Music and Musical Life By Arvid Vollsnes Through all the centuries of documented Norwegian music it has been obvi- ous that there were strong connections to European cultural life. But from the 14th to the 19th century Norway was considered by other Europeans to be remote and belonging to the backwaters of Europe. Some daring travel- ers came in the Romantic era, and one of them wrote: The fantastic pillars and arches of fairy folk-lore may still be descried in the deep secluded glens of Thelemarken, undefaced with stucco, not propped by unsightly modern buttress. The harp of popular minstrelsy – though it hangs mouldering and mildewed with infrequency of use, its strings unbraced for want of cunning hands that can tune and strike them as the Scalds of Eld – may still now and then be heard sending forth its simple music. Sometimes this assumes the shape of a soothing lullaby to the sleep- ing babe, or an artless ballad of love-lorn swains, or an arch satire on rustic doings and foibles. Sometimes it swells into a symphony descriptive of the descent of Odin; or, in somewhat less Pindaric, and more Dibdin strain, it recounts the deeds of the rollicking, death-despising Vikings; while, anon, its numbers rise and fall with mysterious cadence as it strives to give a local habitation and a name to the dimly seen forms and antic pranks of the hol- low-backed Huldra crew.” (From The Oxonian in Thelemarken, or Notes of Travel in South-Western Norway in the Summers of 1856 and 1857, written by Frederick Metcalfe, Lincoln College, Oxford.) This was a typical Romantic way of describing a foreign culture.

1 The TENORSAX of KRISTIAN BERGHEIM Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: June 21, 2016 2 Born: Stabekk, Bærum, Norway, June 6, 1926 Died: Stabekk, Bærum, Norway, May 30, 2010 Introduction: When I grew up in Oslo Jazz Circle, Kristian Bergheim was a well known tenorsax ‘name’, but he was not that easy to hear, going back and forth between Norway, Sweden and England. Only too late did I discover what was going on in the numerous jam sessions… History: Member of bigband led by Stein Lorentzen winter 1944/45, with Arne Klette's orchestra at Tjøme summer 1945, Hein Paulsen's orchestra in Åsgårdstrand summer 1946, later with Hans Backe's bigband, jobs with Rowland Greenberg, Ivar Wefring and own bands. Professional musician from 1948, worked with Sven Sjøholm in Gøteborg early summer 1948, with Peanuts Holland in Dec. 1949. In early 50s worked mostly in dance bands but also in various concert bands organized by impressario Lasse Gerlyng 1950-54 ("Norsk Jazzelite", also in Copenhagen 1950, ensemble "Ny Norsk Jazz" 1953-54). Played with Terje Kjær and Rowland Greenberg's orchestras 1952, Kjell Johansen's eksperimental band 1953. Several times voted as Norway's best tenorsax player. Played with Kenneth Fagerlund's orchestra in Gothenburg 1954-55. Played with Pete Brown's groups in Norway 1955-56 and Malte Johnson's orchestra in Gothenburg 1956. Quit music temporarily for textile studies in England 1956-57, however soon back as professional musician. Played with Pete Brown, Per Nyhaug and Kjell Karlsen's orchestras 1958-59. Led restaurant band with wife Anita Thallaug in the early 1960s.

1 The TENORSAX of MICHAEL FLAGSTAD “MIKKEL” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Aug. 18, 2017 2 Born: Oslo, April 23, 1930 Died: Oslo, June 29, 2005 Introduction: Mikkel Flagstad was a highly respected tenor saxophonist in the Norwegian jazz community. It should be mentioned that he was the nephew of the famous opera singer Kirsten Flagstad. His possibilities for a great career were cut short by having to remove one lung. Personally I never heard him play, but I met him in trying to identify the tenorsax soli with the Kjell Karlsen orchestra, a very kind and pleasant man. History: With Tage Wilford's orkester ca. 1945, school band at Riis 1945-46 (cl, as), professional musician 1946-70, with Hans Backe, Kjell Johansen's orchestra in Åsgårdstrand and touring Sweden 1948. Touring with Per Asplin same autumn, several jobs with Karl Otto Hoff a.o., in Den Norske Swing Klubb's orchestra 1949. One of the first to play real bebop in Norway. Led own bebop band autumn 1949 but no recordings exist. Played with Egil Monn-Iversen's orchestra 1951. Played with Ragnar Robertsen's and Kjell Johansen's experimental band 1952 (heavily influenced by Lennie Tristano) but left for Sweden later that year to work for Simon Brehm. Illness brought MF back to Norway in 1954, but one year later he was active again, with "Norsk Jazzelite" and Kjell Johansen's Radioband in 1955. Worked with Alf Søgaard and Aage Kjelstrup at Restaurant Humlen 1955-57. Illness brought MF back to Norway in 1954, but one year later he was active again, with "Norsk Jazzelite" and Kjell Johansen's Radioband in 1955.

April 1967 Njårdhallen According to Rob Bowman, a Stax expert, the Stax/Volt tour of 1967 was the best tour of soul music ever. The usual East Coast jump from chilly post-winter to scorching full summer (otherwise known as spring - guess it really can hang New York@Night you up the most) has occurred, buoyed by last month’s slew of festivals. A nice 4 perk to summer in the city is how jazz gets to come out of the basements and dark rooms and get some sun, not to mention larger-than-usual crowds. There are Interview: Freddy Cole shows in various parks and the city’s open spaces this month; check our Event 6 by Andrew Vélez Calendar for places to tan while soaking up some jazz.
