TROPICAL LEPIDOPTERA NEWS December 1996 No.4 LEPIDOPTERORUM CATALOGUS (New Series) The new world catalog of Lepidoptera renews the series title The new series (as edited by J. B. Heppner) began already in first begun in 1911. The original catalog series was published by 1989 with publication of the catalog of Noctuidae, by R. Poole. W. Junk Publishers of Berlin, Germany (later The Hague, E. J. Brill Publishers, of Leiden, Netherlands, published this first Netherlands), continuing until 1939 when the incomplete series fascicle in 3 volumes, covering already about a third of all known was deactivated due to World War II. The original series Lepidoptera. Since ATL took over the series, several families completed a large number of families between 1911 and 1939, have been readied for publication. Already this month, Fascicle totalling about 3 shelf-feet of text. Most Microlepidoptera, 48, on Epermeniidae, was published (authored by R. Gaedike, of however, were not covered, as also several macro families like the Deutsches Entomologisches Institut, Eberswalde, Germany). Noctuidae, and several families are incomplete (e.g., Geometridae In 1997, several other smaller families are expected, including and Pyralidae). Even for what was treated, the older catalogs are Acanthopteroctetidae (Davis), Acrolepiidae (Gaedike), Cecidosi now greatly out of date, due to the description of many new dae (Davis), Cercophanidae (Becker), Glyphipterigidae (Heppner), species and many changes in nomenclature over the last 5 to 8 Neotheoridae (Kristensen), Ochsenheimeriidae (Davis), Opostegi decades. dae (Davis), and Oxytenidae (Becker). Much of the publication The new series resembles the old series in some ways but it schedule depends on the cooperation of various specialists who will also have features not found in the old work. -
Lepidoptera of a Raised Bog and Adjacent Forest in Lithuania
Eur. J. Entomol. 101: 63–67, 2004 ISSN 1210-5759 Lepidoptera of a raised bog and adjacent forest in Lithuania DALIUS DAPKUS Department of Zoology, Vilnius Pedagogical University, Studentų 39, LT–2004 Vilnius, Lithuania; e-mail: [email protected] Key words. Lepidoptera, tyrphobiontic and tyrphophilous species, communities, raised bog, wet forest, Lithuania Abstract. Studies on nocturnal Lepidoptera were carried out on the Laukėnai raised bog and the adjacent wet forest in 2001. Species composition and abundance were evaluated and compared. The species richness was much higher in the forest than at the bog. The core of each lepidopteran community was composed of 22 species with an abundance of higher than 1.0% of the total catch. Tyrpho- philous Hypenodes humidalis (22.0% of all individuals) and Nola aerugula (13.0%) were the dominant species in the raised bog community, while tyrphoneutral Pelosia muscerda (13.6%) and Eilema griseola (8.3%) were the most abundant species at the forest site. Five tyrphobiotic and nine tyrphophilous species made up 43.4% of the total catch on the bog, and three and seven species, respectively, at the forest site, where they made up 9.2% of all individuals. 59% of lepidopteran species recorded on the bog and 36% at the forest site were represented by less than five individuals. The species compositions of these communities showed a weak similarity. Habitat preferences of the tyrphobiontic and tyrphophilous species and dispersal of some of the species between the habi- tats are discussed. INTRODUCTION (1996). Ecological terminology is that of Mikkola & Spitzer (1983), Spitzer & Jaroš (1993), Spitzer (1994): tyrphobiontic The insect fauna of isolated raised bogs in Europe is species are species that are strongly associated with peat bogs, unique in having a considerable portion of relict boreal while tyrphophilous taxa are more abundant on bogs than in and subarctic species (Mikkola & Spitzer, 1983; Spitzer adjacent habitats. -

Results of two lepidopterological surveys carried out on the Tlustec Hill near Mimoň in the Liberec Region in 1985–1988 and in 2007 are presented. Deciduous forests are predominant habitats at the site, plant com- munities belong to the Tilio-Acerion and Fagion aliances. In total, 616 species of butterflies and moths were found. In 2007, moth communities were studied quantitatively with the use of portable light traps and the dominance of captured species was calculated. The following significant species associated with natural deciduous forests showed higher levels of dominance (more than 1% frequencies in the quantitatively assessed sample) calculated per single excursion: Bucculatrix thoracella (Thunberg, 1794), Caryocolum blandellum (Douglas, 1852), C. tricolorellum (Haworth, 1812), C. huebneri (Haworth, 1828), C. kroesmanniellum (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854), Gelechia sestertiella Herrich-Schäffer, 1854, Epagoge grotiana (Fabricius, 1781), Pammene aurita Razowski, 1991, Parectropis similaria (Hufnagel, 1767), Ptilodon cucullina (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775), Pechipogo strigilata (Linnaeus, 1758) and Brachylomia viminalis (Fabricius, 1776). Subdominant occurrence of Hepialus fusconebulosus (De Geer, 1778) and Perizoma didymatum (Linnaeus, 1758) corresponds with azonal character of the top of the Tlustec Hill. Coleophora filaginella Fuchs, 1881 was recorded in the Czech Republic for the first time. -
