Learn more about each program and get some giveaways. This discussion shares ideas for using hands-on craft projects to enrich students’ understanding of core subjects. Create a beautiful brooch using the traditional metalworking techniques of repoussé and chasing. Hear about Asia Society Texas Center – Educator and School Resources (E, M, H, HS) – 9 AM educational opportunities at HCCC, and receive printed lesson plans to take home. Asia represents more than half of global population, three of the world’s four largest economies, and the origin of almost 400,000 Houstonians. ASTC provides students knowledge of this area through programming in arts, Houston Center for Photography – Understanding the Basics of Photography business, culture, education, and policy. Presentation will share details on school tours, introduce upcoming (E, M, H, HS and Bilingual / ESL) – 10 AM & 11 AM workshops, and offer curriculum. Presentation will provide an overview of the functioning of a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera introducing concepts such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Discover how to bring the outdoors into the classroom. Take a tour of EcoStation and learn how to take inquiry based activities straight into the classroom. The Houston Museum of Natural Science houses the Burke Baker Planetarium Wortham IMAX® Theatre Cockrell Butterfly Center and over a dozen permanent exhibit areas that examine astronomy space science Native Children’s Museum of Houston – Cool Chemistry for Kids (E, HS) – 10 AM & 11 AM Americans paleontology energy chemistry gems and minerals seashells Texas wildlife and more. Transform the classroom into a chemistry lab! Experiments will cover properties, and reactions of matter. Whether they are used on their own or coinciding with other lessons, these experiments will create enthusiasm Lawndale Art Center – Informational Session – 10 AM and a new understanding of chemistry. All activities are aligned with Science TEKS. Lawndale is dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art with an emphasis on work by regional artists. The organization presents exhibitions, performances, lectures, film screenings and events, and offers an annual City of Houston WaterWorks Education Center – Informational Booth Only residency program to further the creative exchange of ideas among Houston's diverse communities. Houston’s WaterWorks Education Center is a one-of-a-kind water destination designed to inspire citizens of all ages to conserve drinking water resources and protect the environment. Lone Star Flight Museum – Today and Beyond (E, M, H, HS) – 10 AM & 11 AM Explore education programs that focus on science, technology, engineering, and history, and preview the new Contemporary Arts Museum Houston – Teaching Through Contemporary Art Aviation Learning Center, available in 2017. (E, M, H, HS and Bilingual / ESL, SPED) – 11 AM & 12 NOON Explore visual literacy, multiple intelligences, and how inquiry-based teaching relates to constructivist learning Moody Gardens® – Rainforest Roadshow: The Tropical Rainforest; an Overview theory. Learn about gallery activities and how “play” can be a great tool for comprehension. These approaches (E, M, H, HS and SPED, G/T) – 9 AM, 11 AM & 12 NOON overlap into multiple learning subjects, fitting into STEM. Moody Gardens® Rainforest Roadshow is an enriching multi-sensory experience that allows the exploration of the wonder of tropical American rainforests through intriguing artifacts, feathers, fur, fragrant spices, traditional Downtown Aquarium – Squidy Anatomy (E, M, H, HS) – 11 AM & 12 NOON musical instruments, and indigenous clothing; all without ever leaving your classroom. A squid uses its mantle to jet propel itself through the water and its tentacles to catch prey. In Squidy Anatomy, learn all about these amazing creatures plus dissection techniques, external and internal squid anatomy, and The Health Museum – Elementary Field Trips (E, HS) – 10 AM animal adaptations. Attendees will learn about the various field trip and outreach options available for students in grades pre-k thru 5th grade while performing a hands-on owl pellet dissection. Fort Bend Museum & George Ranch Historical Park – Informational Booth Only Bring history to life through hands-on education and experiential learning while sharing techniques for engaging The Health Museum – The DeBakey Cell Lab and Secondary Field Trips (M, H, HS, and G/T) – 11 AM & 12 students through a hands-on approach. NOON Attendees will get an overview of the Health Museum’s newest permanent exhibit, the DeBakey Cell Lab and will Holocaust Museum Houston – Hatred & Bigotry are Toxic: Teach about the Holocaust then have an opportunity to perform an experiment within the lab. (E, M, H, HS and Bilingual / ESL) – 9 AM & 12 NOON Presentation will focus on the content, context, and pedagogical best practices to teaching about the Holocaust. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston – Looking to Write (E, M, HS) – 10 AM & 11 AM All attendees will leave with new materials to use and new ideas on teaching about the Holocaust, including Jumpstart the writing process by utilizing the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston as inspiration. Writers need to find resources in both Spanish and English. "territories" to jumpstart their writing.
