Full terms of use are available: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/red/research-policy/pure/user-guides/ebr-terms/ An Accidental Americanist: Sir Thomas Phillipps and Juan de Tovar’s Historia de los indios mexicanos (Bibliotheca Phillippica, MS 8187) David Hook University of Bristol Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), antiquarian, landowner, unsuccessful parliamentary candidate, virulent anti-Papist campaigner, and much else besides, is principally remembered as a bibliophile and collector of manuscripts, of which by his death he had amassed over 38,628 (and probably in fact around sixty thousand, depending on the definition and criteria adopted for counting them).1 He is not usually thought of as an Americanist or a Hispanist, and I do not, in general, dissent from that judgement. It is, however, the case that his collections and connections led him perhaps by accident rather than by design into the field of Latin American studies. As a discipline, Hispanic Studies as such did not yet exist, and Phillipps should in any case be seen rather as a facilitator than an investigator in this area: the principal significance of his contribution lay in rescuing and preserving primary source material on a grand scale, and in giving access to others to study manuscripts in his collection.

DiCuirci, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Elizabeth Hewitt, Adviser Jared Gardner Susan Williams Copyright by Lindsay Erin Marks DiCuirci 2010 ABSTRACT “History’s Imprint: The Colonial Book and the Writing of American History, 1790-1855” investigates the role that reprinted colonial texts played in the development of historical consciousness in nineteenth-century America. In the early decades of the nineteenth century, antiquarians and historians began to make a concerted effort to amass and preserve an American archive of manuscript and print material, in addition to other artifacts and “curiosities” from the colonial period. Publishers and editors also began to prepare new editions of colonial texts for publication, introducing nineteenth-century readers to these historical artifacts for the first time. My dissertation considers the role of antiquarian collecting and historical publishing—the reprinting of colonial texts—in the production of popular historical narratives. I study the competing narratives of America’s colonial origins that emerged between 1790 and 1855 as a result of this new commitment to historicism and antiquarianism. I argue that the acts of selecting, editing, and reprinting were ideologically charged as these colonial texts were introduced to new audiences. Instead of functioning as pure reproductions of colonial books, these texts were used to advocate specific religious, political, and cultural positions in the nineteenth century.

The 1785 Juan Martínez de Montoya Document Samuel Temkin n mid-March of 1785 Bernardino López, holding an old document, ap- I peared before a Crown offi cer in Madrid and asked him to order two certifi ed copies. The document López presented to the offi cer was a copy of another, apparently written on 6 March 1609 in Mexico City at the request of Capt. Juan Martínez de Montoya, who had served the Spanish Crown in various capacities in the province of Nuevo México between 1600 and 1608. Fifty years later, in 1835 a genealogy completed in Spain seemed to show that Martínez de Montoya was an ancestor of López. Prepared at that time, a single docu- ment included both the copy of the 1609 document prepared in 1785 and the genealogy.1 Its last page contains the date when it was completed: 26 May 1835. Although the provenance of the 1835 document is unknown, it came into the possession of an antiquarian book dealer in London, where historian France V.

SPANISH ORIENTALISM: WASHINGTON IRVING AND THE ROMANCE OF THE MOORS by MICHAEL STEVENS Under the Direction of Denise Davidson ABSTRACT Edward Said’s description of Orientalism as a constitutive element of the modern West is one of the enduring concepts of cultural history. The Orientalism thesis begins with the observation that in the 19th century Westerners began describing the "Orient," particularly the Middle East and India, as a place that was once gloriously civilized but had declined under the influence of incompetent Islamic governments. This construction was then employed to justify Western Imperialism and the expansion of Christianity into Asia. This dissertation examines a case of Orientalism with a twist. Between 1775 and 1830 a group of Anglophone writers and artists depicted Spain as a state with a cultural trajectory similar to that described by the Orientalists. But in the Spanish case, the glorious past was the age of the Islamic Moors who had ruled parts of the Iberian Peninsula from 700 until 1492, while the current Christian rulers were the backwards and religiously intolerant impediments to progress.

In this significant contribution to Mexican history, historiography, anthropology, and religious studies, Verastique assesses the evangelization efforts of the first bishop of the west Mexican province of Michoacan (a region larger than the modern state), Don Vasco de Quiroga (1477 or 1478 to 1565). The author also places into context and evaluates the dramatic cultural and historical impacts resulting from this effort by focusing on Quiroga who served as bishop from 1535 until his death in 1565.     CATALOGUE THREE HUNDRED THIRTEEN World Travel & Voyages WILLIAM REESE COMPANY 409 Temple Street New Haven, CT 06511 (203) 789-8081 A Note This catalogue is devoted to world travel, exploration, and trade from the first forays by Europeans to the East Indies and Sir Francis Drake’s first circumnavigation of the world in 1577-80 to the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. Within this broad frame there are all manner of items: the works of Cortes, Boemus, and Lopes de Castanheda on the early exploration of the Indies; a series of important works on Drake, includ- ing his World Encompassed of 1628; and some of the earliest Dutch works on the East Indies, including Locke’s copy of Schouten’s circumnavigation, and the works of Neck and Linschoten. Important English voyages include Dampier, Narbrough, and Hearne. There is a wealth of French voyages as well, including the copy of Marchand’s voyage given by the author, Fleurieu, to English hydrographer Alexander Dalrymple. In the 19th century there are important manuscripts relating to the American clashes with Algiers, and such voyages as Flinders, Owen Chase (the source book for Moby Dick), and Fanning. There are also many important manuscript logs and narratives, especially the diary of American naval officer Henry Cadwalader on his 1835-36 voyage to the East Indies, and David Marshall’s illustrated journals of 1845-65.
