The project focuses on a critical-biographical rethinking of Hemingway‘s literary development, integrating previous Hemingway biography and gender studies scholarship with new revelations from the manuscript of the forthcoming first two volumes of the Cambridge Edition of the Letters of Ernest Hemingway. An updated study of the author‘s literary formation is long overdue; Charles Fenton‘s The Apprenticeship of Ernest Hemingway: The Early Years (1954), for example, has served for more than fifty years as a valuable resource for understanding Hemingway‘s early influences and sense of craft. But rather than present the arch of apprenticeship as a dynamic progression of received knowledge and job training, the following chapters foreground Hemingway‘s instruction as a gendered process, a vocational formation deeply influenced by what Joseph Boone has called the ―libidinal currents‖ of modernism as well as Hemingway‘s complicated dealings with male and female tutelary figures, themselves often engaged in unconventional gender roles or sexual practices. Through new correspondence and manuscript analysis, I trace Hemingway‘s movement from an objective, spectatorial view of modernist gender toward a more subjective, ambiguous treatment of his own hetero-masculine identity. Far from mastery, then, I show how Hemingway‘s gender apprenticeship in Paris led to a progressive disorientation. From this perspective, the landscape of Hemingway‘s apprenticeship now looks quite different from Fenton‘s study in 1954. Although all the familiar landmarks are there – family, mentors, journalism, marriage, friendships – Hemingway‘s transatlantic voyage signaled a sea change – the profound reconstitution of his views on gender and sexual identity. v INTRODUCTION BECOMING MODERN In 1915, at the age of sixteen, Ernest Hemingway made a written promise to himself, vowing to ―do pioneering or exploring work in the 3 last great frontiers Africa, central south America or the country around and north of Hudson Bay‖ (qtd. in Reynolds, Young, 29). Within a year, he revised his goal, wishing to become a writer ―whose last territory was those last great frontiers‖ (Reynolds, Young, 30). In his lifetime, Hemingway captured the public imagination and became an icon of American masculinity – world traveller, bullfight aficionado, boxer, hunter, deep-sea fisherman. But based on biographical evidence that was previously suppressed or dismissed, a more complex picture of Hemingway has emerged. For the past twenty-five years, Hemingway criticism has been dominated by a reconsideration of the complex exploration of gender issues throughout his work. In the wake of such publications as The Garden of Eden (published posthumously in 1986), Kenneth Lynn‘s biography of Hemingway (1987), Mark Spilka‘s Hemingway‘s Quarrel with Androgyny (1990), Nancy Comley and Robert Scholes‘ Hemingway‘s Genders (1994), Carl Eby‘s Hemingway‘s Fetishism (1999), and Debra Moddelmog‘s Reading Desire (1999), a more complex picture of Hemingway has had a profound impact on how we view, among other things, the heroic image he so carefully cultivated, including his seemingly uncomplicated model of heterosexual manhood. In these portrayals, his storied heterosexuality and masculinity intermingle with his fascination with sexual twinning, androgynous lovemaking, sexual metamorphosis, and male and female homosexuality. This revised portrait of the author more accurately reflects the unconventional gender and sexual experiences Hemingway sought to understand in his life and in his work. Similarly, my revisionist study involves an intense re-examination of how Hemingway‘s expatriation and apprenticeship in modernist Paris from 1921-1925 provided an important 1 impetus for his explorations in gender alterity. The project focuses on a critical-biographical rethinking of Hemingway‘s literary development, integrating previous Hemingway biography and gender studies scholarship with new revelations from the manuscript of the forthcoming first two volumes of the Cambridge Edition of the Letters of Ernest Hemingway. Whereas many notable works of scholarship have focused on Hemingway‘s Paris years – Michael Reynolds‘ Hemingway: The Paris Years (1989), Peter Griffin‘s Less Than a Treason: Hemingway in Paris (1990), James R. Mellow‘s Hemingway: A Life Without Consequences (1992) – an updated study of Hemingway‘s literary formation is long overdue. Charles Fenton‘s The Apprenticeship of Ernest Hemingway: The Early Years (1954), for example, has served for more than fifty years as a valuable resource for understanding Hemingway‘s early influences and sense of craft. But a revised assessment, incorporating more recent theoretical and biographical knowledge as well as important archival sources not available at the time of Fenton‘s study, seems indispensible, given the new directions of inquiry and biographical perspectives that the much-awaited collected letters will provide. This project thus engages in a close reading of the 1921-1925 correspondence, especially letters never before printed or cited, paying particular attention to details that fill certain gaps in our biographical understanding of Hemingway‘s Paris years while identifying and annotating new information that may change our understanding of the young Hemingway and his emerging fiction. As much as possible, I supplement my discussion of Hemingway‘s fiction from this period with manuscript analysis; in the course of my archival research in the Hemingway Collection at the John F. Kennedy Library, I found it imperative to examine several manuscript versions of a published text, uncovering disguised or censored layers of story that reveal authorial contradictions, ambivalences, or anxieties.

Specifically, the paper will examine the cases of Italians in Australia voting in the 2013 Italian elections and equally that of French citizens in Australia voting in the French Presidential and the following Legislative Elections in 20171. The paper examines the voting patterns there might be between those voting in the home country (Italy and France) and those voting in external electoral colleges in this case the relevant Australian college.

Carpio Ca’ Foscari-Harvard Summer School 2017 TF: Nicholas Rinehart This course explores the fiction and travel literature produced by American writers living in Europe, from the late 19th century to the present. In the course of this period Europe becomes the battlefield for two bloody World Wars as well as the site of a museum past while the USA assumes a dominant role on the world stage. American writers living and traveling in Europe reflect on these shifts and changes while also exploring the various forms of freedom and complex set of contradictions that expatriate life affords. We will focus on American literature set in Europe with readings that include but are not limited to essays, travelogues, poems, novellas, novels, and short stories. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Active participation in the course; two critical essays (5-7 pages) and a third (also 5-7 pages) that may be creative or a revision of a previous assignment (see below); and an in-class presentation. Class Presentations: Throughout the semester, I will ask you to prepare short class presentations of no more than 10 minutes (NB: you will be timed and stopped if you go over the limit) based on close readings of particular passages of the texts we read. Presentations may be done individually or in pairs. You will receive more information on this method as the semester develops. Critical Essays: Two of the three essays required for this class should be critical explorations of texts and/or topics covered in class. These should be based on close analyses of specific passages and may include the secondary recommended material indicated in the syllabus.

The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression.     ‘A True Magic Chamber’: The Public Face of the Modernist Bookshop Andrew Thacker Modernist Cultures 11.3 (2016): 429–451 DOI: 10.3366/mod.2016.0149 © Edinburgh University Press www.euppublishing.com/loi/mod Abstract This article explores the role of bookshops in the construction of a public for modernism and analyses a number of bookshops committed to promoting modernist culture, such as those run by Sylvia Beach (Shakespeare and Company), Adrienne Monnier (La Maison des Amis des Livres), and Frances Steloff (Gotham Book Mart). It also considers how the bookshop is a fulcrum between commerce and culture, a key issue for contemporary modernist studies, and discusses aspects of bookshop culture that seem to operate ‘beyond’ the market. One example is that of We Moderns, a catalogue issued by the Gotham Book Mart in 1940 and which represents a fascinating example of the print culture of the modernist bookshop. Drawing upon the work of Mark Morrisson and Lawrence Rainey, the article also evaluates the position of the bookshop within debates around modernism and the public sphere. The Business of the Magic Chamber A member of the public strolling through Paris in the early 1920s who drifts onto the Left Bank in search of culture, might find themselves in the triangle of small streets between the grander avenues of Boulevard St. Michel and the Boulevard St. Germain in the 6th Arrondissement. These are the streets around the Sorbonne and, as such, there are many bookshops servicing the university. Thinking it might be fun to buy a book, a modern or contemporary book, they stroll up Rue de l'Odéon, across from the National Theatre, spying a likely looking bookshop and decide to enter.

Hays University of California, Davis, USA iot (1924) was a remarkable artistic achievement. Following collages in the works of Picasso, Braque, and Gris, publisher Bill Bird created a collage of newspaper headlines on the cover of that slim volume that linked to the collage of vignettes within that Hemingway wrote. Both depicted a world losing traditional values, torn by war and despair and increasing commercialism. Subsequent Hemingway book covers by Scribners, at least until The Old Man and the Sea, emphasized sales over art and had little to do with content. Keywords: Hemingway, iot, collage, modernist art Introduction The cover of Ernest Hemingway’s 1924 in our time—behind the lower-case title, lower-case author’s name, publisher’s colophon, and lower-case press name—is a collage of newspaper snippets.1 Only 170 copies of the book survived pristine printing on handmade Rives paper, of the 300 planned, with 120 having the watermark of the paper appear under the frontispiece. 1924 was an advanced year for Cubist collages by Picasso and Braque, both of whom incorporated bits of printed material, often newspapers, into their works of art (“collage” from the French for “to glue”). Picasso’s Still Life with Chair Caning (1911-12) features imitation chaircaning on oilcloth surrounded by a frame of actual rope, and on the chair caning one can read the letters J.O.U., which can be a pun on jouer, to play, which both artists were doing with their collages.

Through the Hall of Fame, residents of Chicago and the world are made aware of the contributions of Chicago’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities and the communities’ efforts to eradicate bias and discrimination. With the support of the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations, the Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues (now the Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues) established the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in June 1991. The inaugural induction ceremony took place during Pride Week at City Hall, hosted by Mayor Richard M. Daley. This was the first event of its kind in the country. The Hall of Fame recognizes the volunteer and professional achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, their organizations and their friends, as well as their contributions to the LGBT communities and to the city of Chicago.
