The Spanish Navigations in the SPANISH LAKE (Pacific Ocean) and their Precedents From the Discovery of the New World (Indies, later America) Spanish explorers threw themselves with “gusto” into further discoverings and expeditions. They carried in their crew not only the “conquerors” and explorers, but also priests, public administrators who would judge the area’s value for colonization, linguists, scientists, and artists. These complete set of crew members charted the coasts, the currents, the winds, the fauna and flora, to report back to the crown for future actions and references. A very important part of the Spanish explorations, is the extent and role of local peoples in Spain’s discoveries. It was the objective of the crown that friendly connections and integration be made. In fact there were “civil wars” among the crown and some “colonizers” to enforce the Laws of Indies which so specified. Today, some of this information has been lost, but most is kept in public and private Spanish Museums, Libraries, Archives and private collections not only in Spain but in the America’s, Phillipines, the Vatican, Germany, Holland, and other european countries, and of course the United States, which over its 200 year existence as a nation, also managed to collect important information of the early explorations. Following is a synopsis of the Spanish adventure in the Pacific Ocean (Lago Español) and its precedents. The approach emphasizes two cultural phenomena: how the indigenous peo ple related to the Conquistadors in forging a new society, as well as how im migration, particularly to Lima, has shaped contemporary Peru. This contribu tion also aims at providing a bibliographical resource to those who would like to conduct research on Peru. -

[The Role of the Price Revolution in European Industrializatıon: An Explanation With Respect to the Social and Economic Transformation of Europe]. [Master Thesis], Ankara, [2019]. The industrialization period of Europe was a milestone in the economic history. Its consequences are still faced by modern nation states. Hence, the roots of the Price Revolution – the great inflation of sixteenth century which was experienced in Europe – and its effects to this process was questioned in this thesis. First of all the social transformation of Europe – transition from feudalism to capitalism – was briefly analyzed by considering the mercantilist era as well. This period was important for us to focus on the monetization of the economies. At the same time, the relationship between the precious metal inflow, minting activities and the inflation was questioned. To create an insight on the case, price indexes of various cities in Europe and price trends of different sectors were given. Then, the demand base of the Price Revolution – its relationship with the population – was considered in the frame of quantity theory of money. -

Consolidated power and created the foundation for notes Europe’s first modern nation-states in France, England and Spain. 1. This evolution had begun in the Middle Ages. a. New Monarchs on the continent began to make use of Roman Law and declared themselves “sovereign” while incorporating the will and welfare of their people into the person of the monarch This meant they had authority to make their own laws b. Meanwhile, monarchies had grown weaker in eastern Europe during the Middle Ages. 2. New Monarchies never achieved absolute power; absolutism did not emerge effectively until the 17th century (e.g. Louis XIV in France). 3. New Monarchies also were not nation-states (in the modern sense) since populations did not necessarily feel that they belonged to a “nation” a. Identity tended to be much more local or regional. b. The modern notion of nationalism did not emerge until the late 18th and early 19th centuries. B. Characteristics of New Monarchies 1. Reduced the power of the nobility through taxation, confiscation of lands (from uncooperative nobles), and the hiring of mercenary armies or the creation of standing armies a. The advent of gunpowder (that resulted in the production of muskets and cannon) increased the vulnerability of noble armies and their knights b. However, many nobles in return for their support of the king gained titles and offices and served in the royal court or as royal officials 2. -

The Sustainable Debts of Philip II: A Reconstruction of Spain’s Fiscal Position, 1560-1598* Mauricio Drelichman Hans-Joachim Voth The University of British Columbia ICREA/Universitat Pompeu Fabra and and CIFAR CEPR This Draft: January 2010 Abstract: The defaults of Philip II have attained mythical status as the origin of sovereign debt crises. We reassess the fiscal position of Habsburg Castile, deriving comprehensive estimates of revenue, debt, and expenditure from new archival data. The king’s debts were sustainable. Primary surpluses were large and rising. Debt/revenue ratios were broadly unchanged across Philip’s reign. Castilian finances in the sixteenth century compare favorably with those of other early modern fiscal states at the height of their imperial ambitions, including Britain. Illustrated by Barbara Knuts ©2001 Blooming cacao tree by Amy Butler Greenfield Several thousand years ago, forest dwellers in Central America discovered an amazing tree in the rain forest. Small white flowers sprang from its branches and its trunk. The flowers ripened into bright red-and yellow fruit. This fruit contained seeds, or beans, that humans could eat. The small brown beans were bitter, but they had a flavor that the forest dwellers liked. By 500 B.C. people in Mexico and Central America were growing these cacao trees in special orchards. Over time cacao beans became very valuable, so valuable that the great Aztec rulers collected them as a tribute. By the late 1400’s, people were treating the beans like coins: they used them to buy food and clothing. In the early 1500s, for instance, three cacao beans would buy you a rabbit. 1 Nowadays most governments produce money in the form of bills and coins. The Aztec rulers, however, did not mint coins, perhaps in part because cacao beans were already so handy. Cacao beans grew naturally, and they were easy to carry. They were also simple to measure. Cacao beans had other good points, too. They were cheap enough to be used for small purchases and usually lasted for several years, even with rough treatment. -
