Jesus, my treasure! and full of longing for you! nothing else that is dearer to me. 2 Es ist nun nichts Verdammliches an denen, die in Christo Jesu sind, die nicht nach dem Fleische wandeln, sondern nach dem Geist. There is now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit. 3 Unter deinem Schirmen Laß den Satan wittern, Ob es itzt gleich kracht und blitzt, Beneath your shield Let the devil sniff around, Even though thunder crashes and bin ich vor den Stürmen laß den Feind erbittern, lightning blazes, I am free from the storms let my enemy become incensed, ob gleich Sünd und Hölle schrecken: aller Feinde frei. mir steht Jesus bei. even though sin and hell terrify, of all enemies. Jesus stands by me. Jesus will mich decken. For the law of the Spirit that made me alive in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death. 5 Trotz dem alten Drachen, Tobe, Welt, und springe; Gottes Macht hält mich in acht; Defiance to the old dragon, Rage, world, and attack; The power of God holds me fast; Trotz des Todes Rachen, ich steh hier und singe Erd und Abgrund muss verstummen, defiance to the jaws of death, I stand here and sing earth and abyss must fall silent, Trotz der Furcht darzu! in gar sichrer Ruh. ob sie noch so brummen. defiance to fear as well! in certain and secure peace! however much they might rumble. You, however, are not controlled by the flesh but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ, does not belong to him. 7 Weg mit allen Schätzen! Weg ihr eitlen Ehren, Elend, Not, Kreuz, Schmach und Tod Away with all treasures! Away with all vain honors, Suffering, distress, the cross, shame and Du bist mein Ergötzen, ich mag euch nicht hören, death; You are my delight, I choose not to listen to you, soll mich, ob ich viel muss leiden, Jesu, meine Lust ! bleibt mir unbewusst! however much I have to suffer, Jesus, my desire! remain unknown to me! nicht von Jesu scheiden. will never separate me from Jesus. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin; but your Spirit is alive because of righteousness. 9 Gute Nacht, o Wesen, Gute Nacht, ihr Sünden, Gute Nacht, du Stolz und Pracht! Good night, existence, Good night, sins, Good night, pride and glory! das die Welt erlesen! bleibet weit dahinten, Dir sei ganz, du Lasterleben, that cherishes the world! stay far away, Once and for all, you life of iniquity, Mir gefällst du nicht. kommt nicht mehr ans Licht! Gute Nacht gegeben. You do not please me. never again come to light! I bid you good night! And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who lives in you. 11 Weicht, ihr Trauergeister, Denen, die Gott lieben, Duld ich schon hier Spott und Hohn, Vanish, spirits of gloom, For those who love God, Though here I endure scorn and ridicule, denn mein Freudenmeister, muß auch ihr Betrüben dennoch bleibst du auch im Leide, for my master of joy, even their afflictions still, even in suffering, you remain, Jesus, tritt herein. lauter Zucker sein. Jesu, meine Freude. Jesus, steps in. are filled with joy. Jesus, my joy. III. Reflection Selections from “Elijah” Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) G. Schirmer, Inc. ISBN 978-0-7935-4559-9 Cast Thy Burden Upon the Lord (Mvt 15) Written in chorale style, this setting of Psalm 55:22, 16:8, 108:5 and 25:3 for SATB quartet is based on the Lutheran Chorale “O Gott, du frommer Gott.” Cast thy burden upon the Lord; And he shall sustain thee. He will never suffer the righteous to fall; For he is at thy right hand. Thy mercy, Lord, is great, and far above the heav’ns. No man who hopes in thee shall e’er be put to shame. He, Watching Over Israel (Mvt 29) A chorus based on Psalm 121:4 and 138:7 featuring a gentle, pastorale character utilizing imitative style and ending with a phrase of unaccompanied harmony. He, watching over Israel, slumbers not, nor sleeps; Shouldst thou, walking in grief, languish, He will quicken thee. He, watching over Israel, slumbers not, nor sleeps. He That Shall Endure (Mvt 32) This chorus is a musical setting based on texts from Matthew 10:22 and 24:13. The majority of the movement is written in a homophonic, chorale style, but occasionally makes use of imitative effects. The Oxford History of Music, Vol .VI makes this observation: “[This] chorus is specially attractive; it contains nothing that resembles or even aims at passion; it is merely a record of a tranquil peaceful mood, truly and beautifully expressed.” He that shall endure to the end, God will save him.
