It Is Well with My Soul Psalms 146
PREACHING THROUGH THE HYMNS: It Is Well With My Soul Psalms 146 Words: Horatio Gates Spafford (1828-1888) in 1873 Composed: Phillip Paul Bliss (1838-1876) in 1873 Horatio Gates Spafford Horatio G. Spafford was born in North Troy, New York on October 20, 1828. A Presbyterian layman, he settled in Chicago and established a successful legal practice. Along with his financial success, he always maintained a keen interest in Christian activities. He enjoyed a close and active relationship with D.L. Moody and other evangelical leaders of that era. He was described as a “noted gospel musician and as a man of unusual intelligence and refinement, deeply spiritual and a devoted student of the Scriptures.” Some months prior to the Chicago Fire of 1871, Spafford had invested heavily in real estate on the shore of Lake Michigan, and his holdings were wiped out by this disaster. Desiring a rest for his wife and four daughters as well as wishing to assist Moody in one of his campaigns in Great Britain, Spafford planned a European trip for his family in November of 1873. Due to unexpected last minute business developments, he had to remain in Chicago, but he sent his wife H.G. Spafford and their four daughters Anna, Maggie, Bessie, and Tanetta on as scheduled on the S.S. Ville du Havre. A last minute change in cabin assignments moved them toward the bow of the vessel. He told them “goodbye,” and promised to meet them in France in a few weeks. The French liner, S.S. Ville du Havre, was the most luxurious ship afloat when it sailed from New York. -

When Durham University Wanted a Proposer for the Motion 'Jesus
‘This house believes that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life’ was the motion debated by Durham University’s Students Union. It was loudly announced that the proposer was the president of the Seventh- day Adventist Church in the UK. Other proposers were Oxford philosopher Professor Richard Swinburne and Rt Revd Brian Smith, the Anglican Bishop of Edinburgh. The opposers of the motion were hardly less well- known. There was Dr Stephen Law, author and scholar, Stuart Sim, another published philosopher, and Thomas Bull, a finalist in the world debating championships. To be invited into the company of such luminaries is a symbol of acceptance and great good news – but to be asked to speak on such a subject suggests that someone, somewhere, has heard that Seventh- day Adventists know something about Jesus. It would appear that someone is beginning to hear our voice. The debating hall, within sight and sound of the cathedral, was packed – not with theologians, philosophers and sundry academics, but with a large crowd of young people who had decided that a debate was of greater importance than a Friday night on the town. The talk before the debate began was not whether United will win the league but whether there was ‘any point in a religious experience’, or ‘I’ve always been to church’, and ‘I was an atheist before I became a Christian.’ Solid and encouraging stuff. The debate did not reveal any new approaches in how to persuade people that Jesus really is the Way, the Truth and the Life, nor did the opposition provide truly stunning arguments against our concept of God. -
The American Colony Jerusalem Beginnings
THE HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN COLONY JERUSALEM Beginnings The fire which consumed Chicago in 1871 started a series of events that would lead Horatio Spafford and his young Norwegian wife Anna to Jerusalem, and eventually to the establishment of the American Colony Hotel. Horatio, Anna, and their four little girls were living in Lake View, a suburb of Chicago, when the great fire hit. They threw themselves into the task of helping the many families in distress, inspired in part by their strong religious faith. In 1873, physically and emotionally exhausted by their work, they decided to take the family for a holiday in Europe. Horatio was detained on business at the last moment, but Anna and the four little girls went on ahead This booklet is based on a text written by Valentine Vester, and also draws heavily on Odd Karsten Tveit’s aboard the luxury liner S.S. Ville du Havre. excellent ‘Anna’s House’. Details of that work, as well as other recommended books about the American Colony, are listed in the selected bibliography. Shipwreck When most of the passengers and crew were peacefully in bed, disaster struck. A sailing ship collided with the steamer, which sank in minutes. Anna was picked up unconscious on a floating spar. Anna knew immediately when she was revived that her four little girls had been killed and cried out in anguish. At that moment she thought she heard a voice speak to her: “There is a reason why you have been saved. You have work to do.” The idea that a path had been chosen for her became a life-long conviction for Anna.
