With 81 full-page colour plates. Limited edition. Originally published London, 1869. NOTE: John Gould was born in England in 1804. He spent his youth working alongside his father at the Royal Gardens in Windsor, where he developed skills as a taxidermist. By 1827 he had an appointment at The Zoological Society. The historic ‘Birds of Australia’ was a thirty-year production of which two whole years were spent touring Australia. Between 1838-1840 Gould and his wife Elizabeth, who was responsible for producing some 600 drawings for The Birds of Australia, lived and travelled throughout Australia. Together they created the greatest work on Australian avifauna and perhaps Gould’s major ornithological achievement. He was considered the foremost authority on the subject and on numerous occasions during his career made public his concerns about the protection and preservation of many species, which, even in his day, were showing signs of elimination due to excessive shooting. The Birds of Australia remains today the most comprehensive work on the subject, with few new species being added; sadly, two have become extinct and at least twenty others are on the verge of extinction. 41 front cover. In orig. slip-case. Fine crisp copy together with 3 assoc. autograph letters from the author in which he expresses ‘concern that some of the most radical Aboriginal groups may attempt to have this work withdrawn when released, as with Mountford’s Desert Nomads’. NOTE: Grahame Walsh was the world’s leading expert on Australian pre-historic rock art. He criss-crossed the remote vastness of Australia in search of pre-historic rock art, paying particular attention to the unique Bradshaw Paintings, also called Gwion Gwion images, which were fi rst recorded by Joseph Bradshaw in 1891. In 1988 Walsh was commissioned by the Australian Government to produce a book for the National Bicentenary that covered all of the known aboriginal works of art. ‘Australia’s Greatest Rock Art’, the resulting book here offered, is seen as the fi nest of its kind ever produced. Australia’s importance as the richest rock art continent on Earth is little known even among its people. This work was formally recognised by The Royal Geographical Society with the awarding of The Thompson Medal in 1990. $3,000 380 WARREN, Stewart. The Wife’s Guide and Friend.
