Last Name 1 Name: Instructor: Course: Date: My Favorite Book-To-Movie Adaptation Among many books converted into screen adaptations, the trilogy Lord of the Rings has always been my literary passion. From the days of their releases, all parts of the movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson confidently remain the highest-grossing films of all time. Considering the voluminous world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, it is difficult to convey the sequence of events in them; nonetheless, the director managed to portray the plot as accurately as possible. The third book, The Return of the King, is my favorite part of the trilogy, and the extended edition of the movie would be a topic of discussion; however, since it is unwise to try to cover all the events within the trilogy, I will focus on the most significant parts below. Beacon-hills (01:04:30-01:07:51) The fascinating view from the height of Minas Tirith accurately conveys the understanding of how much effort it requires from the little hobbit Pippin to climb on the tower with a signal fire and ask for help, which had been forbidden by the Steward of Gondor. There is a marvelous musical accompaniment to make the viewer wonder how the hobbit could perform his task. From the first lit fire, the movie invites us to trace how a call for help passes through lonely outposts hidden in snowy mountains and how the news finally reaches Edoras. Here, it is also important to mention the acting skills of Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) and Bernard Hill (Theoden). -

Vol. XV (2010) 195-218 TEXT, LIES, AND LINGUISTIC RAPE: REWRITING THEATRE HISTORY IN THE LIGHT OF DRAMATIC TRANSLATIONS John London Goldsmiths, University of London Grup de Recerca en Arts Escèniques, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Although the translation of dramatic texts has received considerable scholarly attention in the last twenty years, a great deal of this energy has been devoted to theoretical or practical issues concerned with staging. The specific linguistic features of performed translations and their subsequent reception in the theatrical culture of their host nations have not been studied so prominently. Symptomatic of this is the sparse treatment given to linguistic translation in general analyses of theatrical reception (Bennett, 1997: 191- 196). Part of the reluctance to examine the fate of transformed verbal language in the theatre can be attributed to the kinds of non-text-based performance which evolved in the 1960s and theoretical discourses which, especially in France, sought to dislodge the assumed dominance of the playtext. According to this reasoning, critics thus paid “less attention to the playwrights’ words or creations of ‘character’ and more to the concept of ‘total theatre’ ” (Bradby & Delgado, 2002: 8). It is, above all, theatre history that has remained largely untouched by detailed linguistic analysis of plays imported from another country and originally written in a different language. While there are, for example, studies of modern European drama in Britain (Anderman, 2005), a play by Shakespeare in different French translations (Heylen, 1993) or non-Spanish drama in Spain (London, 1997), these analyses never really become part of mainstream histories of British, French or Spanish theatre. -

The Clown and the Institution
1 Chapter One: ON THE EDGE, LOOKING OUT 2 I was seven when my Mother’s father, Grandpa, took me down to the beach one summer’s day. I remember that we walked from our bungalow in Bournemouth, down to the front. I picture quite clearly the yellow trolley buses, like giant insects. I smell the crackle of the sparks of electricity from their arms, mingled with the sweetish smell of the sea. I see Grandpa, white hair sticking out from under his cap, horn-rimmed glasses, and a tweed overcoat, which he always wore. We wandered along the busy promenade, him pointing out interesting sights, just like Romany from ‘Out with Romany by the Sea.’ I read this a couple of years later, lying on a bunk in the back cabin of their houseboat when I stayed there one summer, whilst Mum was having another baby and Dad was up in London, working for the Admiralty. Reading the book, with its rough, red cardboard cover, embossed with gilt, was better than actually being by the sea. Yet I could smell the sea through the open porthole. And a faint smell of seaweed came from its mildew stained, cut pages. But this particular day was ‘Out with Romany by the Beach’ and was the real thing. He found a spot on the warm sand for us to sit down. Eventually he took off his coat, grudgingly admitting to the hot day, revealing a creased white short-sleeved shirt. I changed out of my clothes, pulled on my bathers, and started digging furiously with my spade.
