Introduction The Sex Pistols’ “I Wanna Be Me” It gave us an identity. —Tom Petty on Beatlemania Wherever the relevance of speech is at stake, matters become political by definition, for speech is what makes man a political being. —Hannah Arendt, The Human Condition here fortune tellers sometimes read tea leaves as omens of things to come, there are now professionals who scrutinize songs, films, advertisements, and other artifacts of popular culture for what they reveal about the politics and the feel W of daily life at the time of their production. Instead of being consumed, they are historical artifacts to be studied and “read.” Or at least that is a common approach within cultural studies. But dated pop artifacts have another, living function. Throughout much of 1973 and early 1974, several working- class teens from west London’s Shepherd’s Bush district struggled to become a rock band. Like tens of thousands of such groups over the years, they learned to play together by copying older songs that they all liked. For guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook, that meant the short, sharp rock songs of London bands like the Small Faces, the Kinks, and the Who. Most of the songs had been hits seven to ten 1 2 Introduction years earlier. They also learned some more current material, much of it associated with the band that succeeded the Small Faces, the brash “lad’s” rock of Rod Stewart’s version of the Faces. Ironically, the Rod Stewart songs they struggled to learn weren’t Rod Stewart songs at all. -

ForEward PYOTR IL’YICH TCHAIKOVSKY (1840-1893) PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1 About 20 years ago I watched my first concerto and share the excitement of childhood with you, NUTCRACKER SUITE on TV – it was Tchaikovsky’s First Piano the listener! Concerto played by Emil Gilels from 1959. It hit me: the power, the energy, the sheer scale Heartfelt thanks to Marco Assetto, Bob and of this piece! Drakulić, Sanja skladateljica, pijanistica (Zagreb, 16. lipnja 1963.) Studij klavira završila 1986. na Muzičkoj akademiji u Zagrebu (prof. P. Gvozdić), a usavršavala se u inozemstvu (J.–M. Darré, S. Popovici, R. Kehrer). Kompoziciju je počela učiti na MA u Zagrebu kod prof. Stanka Horvata, a nastavila u Moskvi. Studij kompozicije s poslijediplomskom specijalizacijom završila je na Moskovskom državnom konzervatoriju P. I. Čajkovski (A. Pirumov, J. Bucko), gdje je studirala i muzikologiju (E. Gordina) i orgulje (O. Jančenko) te bila asistent. Od 1995. radila je kao redovita profesorica na Visokoj školi za glazbenu umjetnost Ino Mirković u Lovranu, a potom je djelovala kao slobodna umjetnica. Od 2000. radi na Umjetničkoj akademiji Sveučilišta J. J. Strossmayera u Osijeku. Održava međunarodne tečajeve i seminare iz kompozicije i teorije (Europa, Amerika, Japan). Angažirana je u žirijima međunarodnih natjecanja. Piše za Cantus i druge novine. Bila je voditeljica Međunarodne glazbene tribine u Puli. Djela joj izvode priznati svjetski i hrvatski solisti i sastavi na međunarodnim festivalima suvremene glazbe, u koncertnim dvoranama Hrvatske, Bosne i Hercegovine, Njemačke, Rusije, Ukrajine, Italije, Njemačke, SAD–a i Japana. Kao pijanistica nastupa po Europi i Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama. Članica je Hrvatskog društva skladatelja, Saveza skladatelja Rusije i Britanske akademije skladatelja i pjesnika. Nagrade: Na Sveruskom natjecanju mladih kompozitora u Moskvi (1993.) osvojila je prvu nagradu s kompozicijom Pet intermezza za klavir solo. Dobitnica je Jeljcinove Predsjednikove stipendije za skladatelje i brojnih nagrada za skladbe: nagrade Ministarstva kulture Ruske Federacije, te hrvatske nagrade Ministarstva kulture RH za poticanje glazbenog stvaralaštva, Hrvatskog sabora kulture, festivala Naš kanat je lip, Matetićevi dani, Cro patria i drugih. -
