• Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks • Social Networks - Services that allow you to connect with other people of similar interests and background. Usually they consist of a profile, various ways to interact with other users, ability to set up groups, etc. (, LinkedIn, Google+) • Microblogging - Services that focus on short updates that are pushed out to anyone subscribed to receive the updates. () • Media Sharing - Services that allow you to upload and share various media such as pictures and video. Most services have additional social features such as profiles, commenting, etc. (YouTube, , Flickr, and ) • Social News - Services that allow people to post various news items or links to outside articles and then allows it’s users to “vote” on the items. ( and ) • Bookmarking Sites - Services that allow you to save, organize and manage links to various websites and resources around the internet. •Keeps families close •Sharing pictures and videos •Checking in/up more often •Coupons (Groupon, RetailMeNot)* •Following passions (Politics, Sports, Arts) •Community (TRTA on Facebook) Tips to Stay Safe • Be aware of scams which can strike through social networking channels. • Maintain privacy settings on sites. • Do not give out too much private information in their profiles that criminals can use to gain your trust or other identity data. • Don’t open emails or attachments from people you don’t know; malware attachments are still making the rounds which can steal your identity, add spyware, upload Trojan software, or send spam from your account. • Never wire anyone money from an instant message or inbox message on social media; likelihood is someone has stolen info and are using a trusted name to scam you. • Never give out financial info such as bank account numbers or social security numbers. • When redirected to another login page, check your browser for facebook.com or twitter.com and leave site immediately if this is not correct before phishing can occur. • Click at your own risk; if it seems suspicious don’t click it. • Be judicious in giving out your cell phone number; you may get entered into a text messaging service or an app that bills you a monthly fee without realizing it. • Don’t fall for something too good to be true - “tweeting for cash-earn money for tweets”. • Don’t pay for free trials or give your credit card number for access to a trial or you could be charged monthly fees on your credit card for something you never intended to purchase. Online Security: What Does “Public” Mean?

• In Facebook, if you're comfortable making something you share open to anyone on the internet, you can choose Public from the audience selector before you post. Public includes people who are not your friends on Facebook. In other words, anyone on the internet. • Choose what we share, and to whom • “With its top-of-the line internet search, free Web mail, and navigation services, Google is… collecting information about our browsing habits in order to provide more targeted advertising. • Twitter is a way to stay in touch with what interests you. • Compose your own tweets for your followers – up to 140 characters

Purpose/Features of • Once signed in, your Home is where you view that which you are “following.” • You can follow news sources, organizations (sports, the Arts, politics, non-profits), people. • Photos, videos and “conversations” are embedded into “tweets,” which are 140 characters of information. • Can follow anyone on twitter without their having to “accept” you as a “friend” or a “follower.” Therefore, it is inherently less private. The Me tab also shows you all of your posts, whether you posted them directly from twitter, or from other social media applications that you’ve linked Twitter to.

From your Profile, you can set up Twitter so that your Tweets automatically post to your Facebook Timeline. Privacy Settings

• Snap a picture, choose a filter to transform its look and feel, then post to Instagram. Share to Facebook, Twitter, and others too. • Easily integrates with your phone. Download the Instagram App and Post to Instagram Flickr is a photo sharing site that allows you to follow photographers and organizations in the same manner that you follow people on Twitter.
