Abstract: Aulacoseira nygaardii was originally described by Camburn (as Melosira nygaardii in Camburn & Kingston 1986) based on light microscopy. Because the fine structure of this taxon can be difficult to resolve with light microscopy, positive identifications can also be difficult. We present an emended description of this taxon based on an evaluation of type material with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Although SEM micrographs reported as A. nygaardii were presented by Scherer (1988), our observations indicate that the specimens examined by him possess several characters that differ from those in the type material and may represent a different organism. The International Geophysical Year (1957–8) transformed research on the aurora, one of nature’s most elusive and intensely beautiful phenomena. Kristina Espmark * A scientific outsider: Astrid Cleve von Euler and her passion for research (1) Introduction By successfully defending her Ph.D thesis in botany in 1898, Astrid Cleve (b. 1875) became Sweden’s first female doctor of science. She was introduced to science at an early age by her father Per Teodor Cleve, who was an acclaimed professor of chemistry, and devoted herself to continuing his work on diatoms (siliceous algae). As Sweden’s foremost authority on the subject, she compiled an extensive diatom flora during the 1940s and became a titular professor in 1955. Cleve’s careerpath, however, was anything but straight. Once a Ph.D, she was rebuffed by institutionalised science and, firmly dedicated to doing research, sought other means. This paper is a result of my initial work on a Ph.D thesis on Cleve as scientist, amateur researcher and woman, and it will focus on how she pursued her passion for research. (2) Cleve’s student career As most other girls who chose to pursue higher education in Sweden around 1900, Cleve came from an academic home.1 Swedish women gained access to higher education in 1870, when they were given the right to sit the matriculation exam required for university studies. Initially they could only study at the medical faculty, but in 1873 all faculties except divinity were opened to female students.2 Cleve’s mother Alma was the third female student in Sweden and she became a writer and a teacher.

Sterrenburg was an amateur diatomist who became an expert in taxonomy, nomen- clature, microscopy, and photomicrography. He is best known for his work on Gyrosigma Hassall and Pleurosigma W. Smith but contributed in many areas of diatom research. Because of who he was and the nature of his interactions with the diatom community, he has had and will continue to have a lasting impact. His contributions to diatom research have influenced our understand- ing and usage of diatom taxonomy and nomenclature and how taxonomy informs ecological, biostratigraphic and other biological studies. His affable yet incisive character enabled him to be a teacher and mentor to professionals and amateurs and to be respected and appreciated internationally.     Epilogue: Collaborative Couples – Past, Present and Future Nancy G. Slack This new book explores many themes in the lives of collaborative couples in the sciences from the early 1800s through most of the twentieth century. A great deal has been written about women in science since Margaret Rossiter’s seminal book about American women scientists before 1940.1 Other more recent books explore the relationships between couples in literature and art, but For Better or For Worse? Collaborative Couples in the Sciences is the first comprehensive collection to take up the themes explored in Creative Couples in the Sciences (1996) and to elucidate more fully the nature of collaboration.2 The authors who wrote about the couples in both books considered the man’s scientific work and his part in the collaboration as well as the woman’s. Homosexual scientific couples, about which there is little previous study, are considered in the present book as well. Whether these collaborations were for “better or worse” – and for whom – has been pondered by many of the authors. In my view this question deserves special consideration in relation to changes both in societal attitudes and in the way science is done. A number of themes emerged from Creative Couples and from other accounts of scientific couples. In the present book, we can see how the more detailed and perhaps deeper look at collaboration accords with these themes. Several of the authors make excellent use of primary sources to elucidate the nature of collabora- tion between the husband and wife. In the case of Ida and Walter Noddack for example, laboratory notebooks and publications have been carefully analyzed (see Chapter 6, this volume).

Finland 40, 71—98 (1968) THE FLANDRIAN HISTORY OF LAKE HÖYTIÄINEN, EASTERN FINLAND MATTI SAARNISTO Department of Geology and Palaeontology, University of Helsinki, Finland ABSTRACT The present paper on the Flandrian history of Lake Höytiäinen, eastern Finland, is based on stratigraphical and shore morphological investigations. Lake Höytiäinen is situated on the proximal side of a great end moraine, Jaaman- kangas. The final retreat of the ice during the Weichselian glaciation started from Jaamankangas about 10 000 years B.P. Lake Höytiäinen was isolated from the final stage of the Yoldia Sea 8 500—8 900 years B.P. This age is com- patible with the result of Sauramo and Auer (1928). The diatom analysis does not show any influence of salt water before the isolation. After the isolation a transgression started on the SE-side of the isolation threshold and a regression on the NW- side of it. The shore-line displacement of the lake is studied only stratigraphically because no raised beach before the clear shore of 1859 has been found. In 1859 the water of Lake Höytiäinen forced a dam of the canal being built in Jaamankangas and eroded a new outlet through it to Lake Pyhäselkä. The water level fell in a month about 9.5 metres.
