Abstract: The Lynn Morrow papers contain correspondence and research papers, with an additional significant collection of late twentieth-century promotional and advertising items. The papers reflect major areas of Morrow’s research on the southwest region; Iron, Shannon, and Washington counties; Theodore Pease Russell and his writings; and the writings of Silas C. Turnbo. The collection also includes a large selection of promotional publications and ephemera associated with late 20th century tourism in Missouri and Arkansas.

Biographical Note:

Lynn Morrow was born in Mexico, Missouri, in February 1946. He earned a bachelors and master’s degrees in history at Southwest Missouri State University in 1975 and 1980 respectively. He was research historian for the Center for Ozarks Studies, Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University, 1977-1982, where he met and married Kristen Kalen in October 1981. As Kalen and Morrow, they operated a historic preservation consulting firm, 1983-1990, conducting cultural resource management surveys and preparing nominations for the National Register of Historic Places for sites in numerous counties in Missouri. In July 1990, Morrow became supervisor of Missouri’s newly created Local Records Preservation Program at the Missouri State Archives, now a national model for federal and state records associations. He retired in 2012. Morrow has published extensively on the history of Missouri and the Ozarks region of Missouri and Arkansas in scholarly journals including the Missouri Historical Review, Gateway Heritage, Missouri Folklore Journal, and others. He was consulting and contributing editor to Ozarks Watch magazine, published by Southwest Missouri State University, 1987-1990. He edited the White River Valley Historical Quarterly, 1988-2000. His larger works include Connecticut Yankee in the Frontier Ozarks: The Writings of Theodore Pease Russell (Columbia: University of Missouri Press, 1988), and The White River Chronicles of S. C. Turnbo: Man and Wildlife on the Ozarks Frontier (Fayetteville: University of Arkansas Press, 1994; reprint, 1999), both co- edited with James S. Keefe; and Shepherd of the Hills Country: Tourism Transforms the Ozarks, 1880s-1930s, co-authored with Linda Myers-Phinney (University of Arkansas Press, 1999). He is also the editor of The Ozarks in Missouri History: Discoveries in an American Region (Columbia: University of Missouri Press, 2013). Morrow was the most prolific contributor to the Missouri Dictionary of Missouri Biography (Columbia: University of Missouri Press, 1999).

Scope and Content Note:

Correspondence

This series contains correspondence and miscellaneous papers that accompanied various correspondence, related to Morrow’s various research projects. It is organized by either the person with whom he was corresponding or the subject under discussion. The Southwest Missouri subseries consists of correspondence with other researchers on topics related to southwest Missouri including historic preservation, genealogy, and recreation. The Iron, Shannon, and Washington Counties subseries contains correspondence with researchers about the history of the included counties. The Theodore Pease Russell subseries includes correspondence and research related to the work and life of Russell. The S.C. Turnbo subseries consists of correspondence and research related to the S.C. Turnbo collection and The White River Chronicles of S.C. Turnbo. The Miscellaneous subseries includes various correspondence between Morrow and researchers about various Missouri topics, historic preservation, and personal correspondence. The subseries are organized by the person or organization with whom Morrow was corresponding.

The personal correspondence subseries regard many different research projects, personal letters/emails, and clippings of interest to the context of the correspondence. Two sections contain large amounts of correspondence, one from Robert Flanders regarding various topics of research and personal life. The other is between Morrow and David Jacobson, his college

This sub-series contains samples of David’s journalism and socialist commentaries and Morrow’s responses; insights into living arrangements in Beijing; challenges of having a child and raising a family in Beijing; and perils and profits in establishing a new business in China. 20th Century Tourism

This series consists of brochures, advertising materials, promotional items, maps, and miscellaneous paper ephemera related tourism in Missouri and Arkansas. They are arranged alphabetically by county and within subseries by state.

Political Administration

This series contains correspondence, official documents, event brochures, and court decisions that took place under the respective administrator (most commonly the Secretary of State). The majority of these documents deal in relation to the Missouri State Archives and the Local Records Program, where Lynn Morrow worked. The Roy D. and Matt Blunt subseries consists of correspondence and records related to their work as administrators for the Local History Program and their political careers. The Judith Moriarty subseries contains correspondence and records related to her work as administrators for the Local History Program and her political career including records on her impeachment. The Rebecca Cook subseries consists of correspondence and records related to her work as administrators for the Missouri State Archives and her political career. The Robin Carnahan subseries contains correspondence and records pertaining to her work as administrator of the Missouri State Archives and her political career. Also included is information on Lynn Morrow’s retirement in 2012. The Miscellaneous subseries contains political records pertaining to the Missouri State Archives and Lynn Morrow’s career. This series is arranged by the administrator for the Missouri State Archives.

Research

This series contains subseries regarding various topics of Lynn Morrow’s research interests. The Springfield, Missouri, Business subseries is a collection of primary source documents containing records, advertisements, and receipts of Springfield, Missouri, corporations in the late 1920s to 1930s. This includes a beachfront subdivision that never came to be, “Mozarko” and an investment/development company owned Albert O. Haberman the husband of Virginia Young. The Baldknobbers subseries contains newspaper clippings, articles, and correspondence related to Morrow’s research about the Baldknobbers. The Cockfighting subseries includes research, articles, images, advertisements, and correspondence related to Morrow’s research into cockfighting particularly in Missouri. The McClurg subseries consists of photocopies of original documents, photographs, and articles related to the families of Joseph McClurg and Charles Draper. The Moonshine subseries contains research, correspondence, and articles related to the manufacturing, consumption, and distribution of moonshine in Missouri.

The Missouri and Ozarks History and Culture subseries includes numerous newspaper and journal articles dealing with the history and culture of Missouri. Topics include slavery, social customs, and recreation, among others. The Hillbillies subseries contains research on the origins and usage of the term ‘hillbillies.’ The Pippin Place and Family subseries contains research and photographs pertaining to the vacation resort in the Ozarks founded by Dr. B. N. Pippin in 1915, and the Pippin family. The Publications subseries includes correspondence and research

The White River Valley Historical Society subseries contains papers and publications pertaining to the Society. The Russell Family subseries contains materials related to the family of Theodore Pease Russell and related families including the Pease and McCormicks. The Berryman Family subseries contains materials concerning Josiah and Jerome Berryman. The John W. Emerson subseries consists of papers and research about John W. Emerson including Civil War information, business, and genealogy. The Iron County subseries research and articles on the history of Iron County including the Missouri Pacific Railroad, agriculture, economy, communities, and notable inhabitants. The Native American subseries contains research on the Delaware and Shawnee nations including works by Randolph Noe, an expert on the Shawnee. The final subseries contains miscellaneous research related to Morrow’s work on the Civil War, Ozarks history, mining, and local history. This series is arranged by subject.

Photographic Images

This series contains many photographs and negatives, some presumably taken by Morrow himself, and some from others. These deal with areas of interest to Morrow including tourism and recreation. There are many photographs from Morrow’s work with the Historic Preservation Project that include images of historic buildings and structures, many of which are no longer standing. The Missouri counties subseries is arranged alphabetically. The miscellaneous photographs subseries contains images taken or copied by Morrow over the course of his personal research. These photographs include images on thong trees, historic structures, and other historians and researchers he worked with over the years. The images in the miscellaneous subseries are arranged by subject.

Oversize

This series contains papers and materials that are oversize and have been stored separately from the collection. They include copies of the Shepard of the Hills Gazette, articles on mining and resources in Missouri written by W. B. S., and an oversize photograph of Rebecca Cook.
