The Story of Baden-Powell ('The Wolf That Never Sleeps') A biography written of Robert Baden-Powell while he was still alive. Victorian prose is flowery and interesting to read but the coverage is hardly neutral. The work covers Baden-Powell's military career that was illustrious, but does not mention more controversial aspects of that career. • Scout and Guide Stamps Club BULLETIN #313
Scout and Guide Stamps Club BULLETIN Volume 54 No. 5 (Whole No. 313) SPECIAL CENTENARY EDITION SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2010 1 Editorial Well we got a bit better timing with the last issue and, hopefully, will do even better still with this one. It is interesting when one considers “club” publications and their timing, etc. Like most people I am a member of several clubs including, amongst others, The Great Eastern Railway Society. This is an historical society which studies the railway which built the network throughout East Anglia here in the UK. I was instrumental in founding the Society back in 1973 and it has always been one of my interests. The Society publish two magazines, both on a quarterly basis - on alternate quarters throughout the year. The people there don’t seem to get so hung up on the dates of publication because I have just received the January, 2010 issue of their Journal. I mentioned the forthcoming World Jamboree in the last issue and our attempts to share a base / stand with the International Badgers Club. We have now finally heard from one of the organisers, who has been given responsibility for an Historic Exhibition at the event, saying that we are welcome to assist but we must become members of our National Contingent for IST and apply through that. Needless to say the UK has long since selected their Contingents so we have had to reluctantly decline the invitation - but have offered assistance if there is anything particular which is needed. I will end this editorial with thanks for the small supply of new articles and a request for more.

(2012) Young Ghosts: Ethical and Methodological Issues of Archival Research in Children’s Geographies, 'Viewpoint' in Children's Geographies 10 (3): 357-363 Introduction Geographers researching children and young people have often been at the forefront of disciplinary debates in geography surrounding methodological practice and ethical considerations (Matthews et al. 1998; Valentine 1999; Pain 2004; Hemming 2008; special issues ed. Van Blerk and Baker 2008; ed. Hopkins and Bell 2008). In this short paper, I want to focus on a less-popular research method used by children’s geographers – archival methods (cf. Gagen 2000, 2001) – and reflect specifically on some of its methodological and ethical challenges. I argue that thinking about historical research can challenge children’s geographers to consider other types of encounter from that of the (embodied) encounter between a researcher and a child (Horton 2008). These different and multiple encounters include those between the (adult) creator of ‘material’ and a young person, a young person (as creator) and their intended audience, and the further encounter between a young person from the past and a present-day researcher during fieldwork.

  • History of Guiding in Victoria
How Did We Get Here? VICTORIAN GIRL GUIDING TURNS 100 IN 2011! Throughout our lives, the Girl Guides Association of Victoria has been there for girls, young and not-so-young women to join and enjoy a program of informal learning, opportunities, fun, personal development and friendship. So just how did Guiding arrive in Victoria? Following the Brownsea Island Camp and after the release of the magazine Scouting for Boys, many groups of girls as well as boys read and tried out Baden-Powell’s (B-P) ideas and formed themselves into Patrols. Although there were no jet planes, emails or mobile phones in 1908, news of Scouting soon reached Australia, along with the magazine, resulting in several boys banding together to form a Scout Patrol, then seeking an adult to act as their Scout Master. Not to be left out, groups of Victorian girls formed their own Patrols too and like several girl groups in the UK and other countries, wrote to B-P begging to be allowed to join and register themselves as Girl Scouts. However adamant he was that it was a boy’s only organisation, such was their determination that they went ahead and registered themselves anyway, by fi lling out the application form, using only their initials and not their full names. It is not known how many Patrols of girls were in existence in Victoria prior to the Crystal Palace Rally in September 1909 but it is noted in the book Those Boy Scouts 1 that at a meeting of Scout Masters in 1909, they were told “any Scout Master assisting or aiding in the formation of Girl Scouts should be asked to resign from his troop”! B-P underestimated the determination of the girls and they continued to enjoy these activities until that very courageous group, led by their Patrol Leader Marguerite de Beaumont, gate crashed the fi rst Boy Scout rally, announcing they were the ‘Girl Scouts’.
