The Road to Bristol Old Vic
250 YEARS OLD Thank you for being part of one of the most significant anniversaries in the history of British theatre. We’ve done our best to curate a programme worthy of your efforts, inspired by the astonishing creativity of the thousands of artists – from Sarah Siddons to Sally Cookson – who have delighted and entertained you and your forebears over the last 250 years. But at heart, ours is a story of passion, survival and reinvention. All the other theatres producing plays in 1766 have fallen down or been demolished because, at some point in their history, their audiences abandoned them. This one has survived because each time it’s faced disaster, Bristolians from all over the world have given it new life. It happened in 1800, when popular demand led to the ceiling being tipped up and the new gallery being built, increasing the capacity to an eye-watering 1,600. It happened in 1933 when Blanche Rogers initiated the campaign that the old place should be saved and become ‘Bristol’s Old Vic’. It happened in 2007 when Dick Penny held the open meeting (which many of you attended), leading to the Arts Council continuing its vital support for the theatre. And it’s happening throughout this wonderful anniversary, as you carry us towards the final stage of the refurbishment that will set us securely on our adventures over the next 250 years. So as you read about the shows we’re staging and the projects we’re curating during our birthday year, don’t forget to give yourself a warm pat on the back for being the people who are, in the end, responsible for all of it. -

Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Society 122 (2004), 153–9 Feuding Gentry and an Affray on College Green, Bristol, in 1579 By JOSEPH BETTEY During the 1570s two wealthy, landed gentlemen engaged in a struggle for primacy in Bristol. They were Hugh Smyth, who possessed Ashton Court together with widespread estates in Somerset and south Gloucestershire, and John Young, owner of properties in Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset. Their rivalry was to involve several other gentry families in the district, and culminated in a violent confrontation between their armed retainers on College Green in March 1579. The subsequent inquiry into the incident in the Court of Star Chamber provides much detail about the parties involved, as well as evidence about the status and use of College Green, and about the ancient chapel of St. Jordan and the open-air pulpit which stood on the Green. Although it was in existence for several centuries and was a focus of devotion in Bristol, little documentary evidence survives concerning St. Jordan and his chapel. The following account provides information about the chapel during the 16th century. Hugh Smyth’s wealth, his estates on the southern edge of Bristol, and his family connection with the city gave him a powerful claim to prominence. His father, John Smyth, had made a large fortune by trade through the port of Bristol and had invested his wealth in property in the city and the surrounding region, including the purchase of the Ashton Court estate in 1545. -

Please note that the list does not provide the contents of the records. Also, although it includes covering dates, the registers may not cover every year and there may be gaps in entries. In particular, there are large gaps in many of the bishop’s transcripts. Church of England records Parish registers We hold registers and records of parishes in the City and Deanery of Bristol (later the Archdeaconry of Bristol) which is part of the Diocese of Bristol. These cover: The city of Bristol Some parishes in southern Gloucestershire, north and east of Bristol A few parishes in north Somerset Some registers date from 1538, when parish registers were first introduced. Bishop’s transcripts We hold bishop’s transcripts for the areas listed above, as well as several Wiltshire parishes. We also hold microfiche copies of bishop’s transcripts for a few parishes in the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Bishop’s transcripts are a useful substitute when original registers have not survived. In particular, records of the following churches were destroyed or damaged in the Blitz during the Second World War: St Peter, St Mary le Port, St Paul Bedminster and Temple. -

Future of Redcliffe FOREWORD The Future of Redcliffe Supplementary Planning Document has been guided by a groundbreaking initiative between Bristol City Council and the local community of Redcliffe working together on how the area shall be developed. Redcliffe Futures* brings together residents, businesses, developers and other agencies in a partnership where everyone can have a say about the changes happening in the area. The group started developing these ideas in 2001 and published the Redcliffe Neighbourhood Framework in November 2002. “Redcliffe Futures has been fully involved in developing this SPD. Both the Neighbourhood Framework and General Principles are the foundations of this Supplementary Planning Document and the Council thanks the group for all their hard work in helping to prepare this document.
