NEWSLETTER Embassy of Romania in Belgium NEWSLETTER Embassy of Romania in Belgium No 13 January – March 2016 Message of condolences to Belgium and its citizens The Embassy of Romania to the Kingdom of Belgium conveys the strongest solidarity with the people of Belgium and the Belgian authorities, and the deepest condolences to the grieving families. We share the pain of all the victims of the terrorist attacks on March 22nd, the wounded and those affected, and we assure them of our profound sympathy and deep compassion. During these difficult moments, on behalfomania of the strong infriendship Belgium between Romania and Belgium, we have the duty to defend our democracy and our European values, as well as our solidarity. Romania continues to work shoulder to shoulder with Belgium and other partners in the fight against terrorism. Romanians in Belgium, across Europe and worldwide are expressing their support and solidarity to the Belgian people in these difficult times. Message of the Ambassador of Romania to Belgium, H.E. Mr. Stefan Tinca Dear Readers, As the first three months of 2016 are coming to an end, I would like to share with you all a couple of thoughts. First, as this issue of the Embassy’s Newsletter goes for distribution, I noticed it arrived at #13. I hope it is, in this case, a lucky number. The Newsletter proved to be, in time, one of the main communication tools of our Embassy. It sums up, each quarter, the main political and economic trends in Romania, it outlines the dynamics in the Romanian – Belgian bilateral relations and it provides an overview of the activities of the Embassy. I am confident that this Newsletter will continue in time with its regular rhythm. The second thought has to do with my departure. In a few days, I will finish my mandate as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and I will return to Bucharest. After almost three and a half years in Belgium, I am coming to the end of a very interesting experience, both personally and professionally. If there is something unfortunate about this departure, it is that it occurs in such difficult times for Belgium. But at the end of my term, I think I got to know quite well the Belgians and I am very confident that they have the resources to overcome this period. And when, in time, I will return in this country, I count to meet my Belgian friends the way I know them: with their distinctive joie de vivre, with their refined sense of humor and with their vocation to be cosmopolitan! Farewell, dear Readers! I wish you all a beautiful life! Political rights and civil liberties are legally guaranteed and largely respected. Major concerns in recent years have included the threat of terrorism, and corruption scandals that have unsettled the country’s complex institutional setting and political landscape. Key Developments in 2019 The federal and regional elections in May shifted the established balance of power in Belgian politics: parties on the far-left and far-right of the political spectrum gained seats, while establishment parties saw their support dwindle. No governing coalition had been formed by the end of the year. In October, police rescued 12 migrants in the back of a refrigerated truck in a highway parking area in the north of the country. Authorities were investigating the existence of a human trafficking ring; two days before this, British officials had found 39 people dead in the back of a truck entering the United Kingdom from Belgium.
