This selects for divergence in traits involved in species identification among co-occurring species, resulting from character displacement. -

TANAGER-FINCH Oreothraupis arremonops V/R10 This cloud-forest undergrowth species has a poorly known and patchy distribution in the West Andes of Colombia and in north-western Ecuador, with few recent records. However, large tracts of apparently suitable habitat remain in protected areas, the reason for its apparent rarity being essentially unknown. DISTRIBUTION The Tanager-finch (see Remarks 1) is known from just a few apparently disjunct areas on the West Andes in Antioquia, Valle, Cauca and Nariño departments, Colombia, and also from Imbabura and Pichincha provinces, north-western Ecuador, where localities (coordinates from Paynter and Traylor 1977, 1981) are as follows: Colombia (Antioquia) Hacienda Potreros (c.6°39’N 76°09’W; on the western slope of the West Andes, south-west of Frontino), where a male (in USNM) was taken at 1,980 m in June 1950 (also Carriker 1959); (Valle) in the region of Alto Anchicayá (c.3°37’N 76°53’W), where the species has fairly recently been recorded (Orejuela 1983); (Cauca) in the vicinity of Cerro Munchique (2°32’N 76°57’W), where the bird is regularly found on the western slope (Hilty and Brown 1986), specific localities including: La Costa (untraced, but c.10 km north of Cerro Munchique), where a female (in ANSP) was taken at 1,830 m in March 1938 (also Meyer de Schauensee 1948-1952), Cocal (2°31’N 77°00’W; north-west of Cerro Munchique), where two specimens were collected at 1,830 m (Chapman 1917a), El Tambo (2°25’N 76°49’W; on the east slope of the West Andes), whence come specimens taken at 1,370 -

Tropical Birding Tours - Trip Report EASTERN ECUADOR RARITIES Custom Tour/ Nov-Dec 2020 A Tropical Birding Tours CUSTOM BIRDING TOUR EASTERN ECUADOR RARITIES 26 Nov-6 Dec, 2020 Report and photos by ANDRES VASQUEZ N., the guide for this tour One of the most wanted birds of the World, the mighty queen of the jungle, Harpy Eagle (picture above at a nesting site). This is probably the easiest access to a nest of this awesome bird of prey in all of Latin America. It involves only a 5-minute car ride from the door of the hotel, 15 minute boat ride on the Napo River, and 2 easy walks of about 10 minutes each on flat but muddy terrain. The nesting pair has been recorded on this site a couple years ago by a local farmer who did not know much about the importance of the bird and therefore it remained “hidden” to the birding world until this year when the same farmer saw the couple again and this time mentioned it to the local guides who recently had been more active in terms of birding. The word spread out quickly and we were forced to tweak the itinerary that we already had for this custom tour and included a visit to the site. It was a tricky visit since just two days before our arrival, a group of scientists that visited the site recommended that no tourists should visit yet. However, since we were already there and it was only two visitors, we joined an already scheduled monitoring visit during which we stayed at the nest site for exactly 3.5 minutes, saw the bird, took a couple photos and left. -

Natural history notes and conservation of two species endemic to the Espinhaço Range, Brazil: Hyacinth Visorbearer Augastes scutatus and Grey-backed Tachuri Polystictus superciliaris Marcelo Ferreira de Vasconcelos Cotinga 11 (1999): 75–78 São descritas observações comportamentais e notas sobre a conservação de dois endemismos da Cadeia do Espinhaço, Brasil: o beija-flor-de-gravata-verde Augastes scutatus e o papa-moscas-de-costas-cinzentas Polystictus superciliaris. Machos de A. scutatus foram observados realizando comportamento territorial, perseguindo outros beija-flores e vocalizando em poleiros expostos ao redor de recursos florais. Por outro lado, as fêmeas desta espécie nunca foram observadas defendendo territórios, sempre sendo registradas visitando flores mais esparsas e voando para outros locais. Indivíduos de P. superciliaris são comumente observados forrageando em arbustos e árvores baixas dos campos rupestres a procura de pequenos insetos. Um ninho encontrado em julho de 1996 e o registro de uma ave jovem em agosto deste mesmo ano na Serra do Curral sugerem que a época reprodutiva desta espécie seja no meio do ano. Embora as duas espécies ocorram em unidades de conservação, sugere-se que A. scutatus seja considerado como uma espécie presumivelmente ameaçada no Estado de Minas Gerais pela aparente grande sensibilidade da mesma à mudanças em seu habitat. Introduction The Espinhaço Range encompasses parts of Minas Gerais and Bahia states in Brazil3 (see map), and is covered by campos rupestres vegetation4 (Fig. 1). The campos rupestres of the Espinhaço Range are an important centre of plant endemism4 and diversity6. Typical botanical families found in the campos rupestres are Eriocaulaceae and Velloziaceae1,4,12,13,15. -

CoP13) on Review of Significant Trade in specimens of Appendix-II species, the Conference of the Parties: DIRECTS the Animals and Plants Committees, in cooperation with the Secretariat and experts, and in consultation with range States, to review the biological, trade and other relevant information on Appendix-II species subject to significant levels of trade, to identify problems and solutions concerning the implementation of Article IV, paragraphs 2 (a), 3 and 6 (a)... 3. Resumen. – Una nueva especie de Eriocnemis (Trochilidae) del suroeste de Colombia. – Una nueva especie de colibrí, el Zamarrito del Pinche (Eriocnemis isabellae, sp. nov.), es descrita de la Serranía del Pinche, un macizo aislado e inexplorado localizado en el Departamento del Cauca en el suroeste de Colombia (02°16’04.18”N, 77°21’26.41”W, 2800 m s.n.m.). Esta especie representa un nuevo miembro distincto del género Eriocnemis y habita los bosques templados y nublados de la Serranía. Aunque se puede identificar fácilmente como un miembro del género Eriocnemis por sus zamarros blancos, el azul violeta en las infracaudales de la cola y la cola azul negra bifurcada, se diferencia ampliamente de la mayoría de las especies de su género en tener la cara, corona y nuca de color negro con visos amarillosos verde oliva. Además, tiene una gorguera bicolor iridiscente distincta, azul violeta y verde. Este nuevo taxón comparte algunas características con otros de su género (i.e., E. vestitus, E. nigrivestis) y esta ecológicamente asociado a bosques enanos ocupando un pequeño rango en pendientes pronunciadas a lo largo de filos montañosos.
