Language: English Processing: Nancy Sanders Gower (c.2005-2012), Adam Gossman (c.2012-2015), Alyson Thomas (October 2018) 2 Historical Note From Fall 1947-Spring 1965, Fuller Seminary’s academic programs were administered under the Dean of Administration, later designated “Dean of the Faculty” (in 1955). Thus, the “Dean Files” from 1947-1965 contains papers related to the general operation of the overall Seminary and theological programs. Fuller Seminary opened with a single degree offering, the Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.). Fuller Seminary inaugurated its Graduate School of Theology during the 1950-1951 school year, when students wishing to pursue studies beyond the Bachelor of Divinity were enrolled. In 1965, the School of Psychology and the School of Intercultural Studies opened, requiring an individual Dean to administer each School. Thus, the original “Dean’s Office” (1947-1965) became the Dean’s Office of the School of Theology. On July 1, 2019, the SOT Dean’s office merged with the SIS Dean’s office under the leadership of Dr. Amos Yong. Harold Lindsell was a founding member of the Seminary, beginning as Registrar in 1947. He also taught Church History and Missions Orientation. Lindsell served as Dean of the Faculty from 1948-1963. Daniel Payton Fuller had many and varied roles at the Seminary through the years, including student, teaching fellow, and Dean. He served as a faculty member until 2000. Reflecting the the 1965 transition of the original “Dean of Students’ Office” into the Dean’s Office of the School of Theology, the collection’s contents focus on the School of Theology administration. Materials include the records of Harold Lindsell (1952 to 1963), Daniel Payton Fuller (1963 to 1973), and William Dyrness (1990-2000). Harold Lindsell's files include Library records kept by the faculty library committee, 1948-1965. During his lifetime Ockenga served as founder and first president of the National Association of Evangelicals; president of the American Board of the World Evangelical Fellowship; president, co—founder, and later Chairman of the Board of Fuller Theological Seminary; Chairman of the Board of CHRISTIANITY TODAY magazine; a member of the board of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association; pastor of historic Park Street Church in Boston for more than three decades; and the founding president of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. His remarkable oratorical skills and visionary speeches made him evangelicalism's most trusted voice for decades. Billy Graham, whose fame has now eclipsed his mentor, claimed that he never made a major decision in his life without first consulting Ockenga. James Received: 6 November 2016; Accepted: 23 December 2016; Published: 27 December 2016 Abstract: American evangelicalism has often been punctuated by dual commitments to the United States and to God. Those commitments were strongest within politically conservative evangelicalism. Though representing a solid majority among professing evangelicals, conservatives could not speak for the movement as a whole. Politically progressive evangelicals, beginning in the 1960s, formed a dissenting opinion of the post-World War II revival of Christian nationalism. They dared to challenge American action abroad, noticeably during the Vietnam War. Their critique of Christian nationalism and conservative evangelicals’ close ties to the Republican Party led them to seek refuge in either progressive policies or the Democratic Party. A third, underexplored subgroup of evangelicalism rooted in reformed theology becomes important to consider in this regard. These reformed evangelicals sought to contextualize nationalism in biblical rather than partisan or political terms. This goal is championed well by Richard Mouw, resulting in a nuanced look at evangelical Christians’ difficult dual role as both citizens of the Kingdom of God and the United States.
