A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumni and Friends, Providing a bridge to dreams. It’s what we do every day at St. Joseph’s College. And it’s something we love to do, and have done for over 100 years! In my first months as president, I quickly ascertained why U.S. News & World Report routinely considers St. Joseph’s to be among the top colleges in the Northeast and why Washington Monthly ranked our school No. 9 on its 2017 list of “Best Bang for the Buck” Northeast institutions. The poet Ovid said it best many centuries ago: “We sing of forms changed into new creations, a perpetual song of renewal and joy.” We provide our students with the opportunity for real and significant change, change that leads to a more fulfilling and impactful life. Our devoted faculty and staff are fully engaged in this mission of transformation, and I am so proud to be part of it all. But their engagement is only part of the picture. Our alumni, parents, friends and trustees are also engaged, and most impressively. During the 2016-2017 fiscal year, the College totaled more than $3 million in donations. Voluntary giving enables St. Joseph’s to expand academic offerings, upgrade facilities and establish new scholarships. We did all of the above this past year. This annual report acknowledges our supporters and serves as documentation of how their devotion infuses the College with the resources we need to provide more students with the precious opportunity of obtaining an excellent college education. Lauren Quesada, a recipient of the Edna Hall Murray Scholarship and a sophomore on our women’s basketball and soccer teams at SJC Brooklyn, spoke for all of our scholarship recipients when she said, “Whenever I don’t want to stay up any later doing homework, or don’t want to spend that extra hour in the gym, I remember that anybody in this school could have this scholarship, but I was the lucky one who was chosen. This scholarship really means everything to me.” Lauren’s story of transformation, one of an array of heartwarming pieces inside this publication, demonstrates why — with your commitment and support — St. Joseph’s continues to be a place where more and more students discover their true potential. Thank you for your dedication to our students. I deeply appreciate your commitment to their success. Sincerely, Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D. President, St. Joseph’s College PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2016-2017 1 ST. JOSEPH’S COLLEGE PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2016 – 2017 President Donald R.
