Pius Ix and the Change in Papal Authority in the Nineteenth Century
ABSTRACT ONE MAN’S STRUGGLE: PIUS IX AND THE CHANGE IN PAPAL AUTHORITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Andrew Paul Dinovo This thesis examines papal authority in the nineteenth century in three sections. The first examines papal issues within the world at large, specifically those that focus on the role of the Church within the political state. The second section concentrates on the authority of Pius IX on the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. The third and final section of the thesis focuses on the inevitable loss of the Papal States within the context of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870. Select papal encyclicals from 1859 to 1871 and the official documents of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870 are examined in light of their relevance to the change in the nature of papal authority. Supplementing these changes is a variety of seminal secondary sources from noted papal scholars. Ultimately, this thesis reveals that this change in papal authority became a point of contention within the Church in the twentieth century. Flags of the Pope's Swiss Guard Since 1798 Emil Dreyer
Page 427 Emil Dreyer: Flags of the Pope’s Swiss Guard since 1798 Abstract: A chronological history of the flags of the Pope's Swiss Guard since the establishment of the Roman Republic in 1798 until today is presented and richly illustrated. Up to the first half of the 19th century only colour drawings can he used as a pictorial testimony of the guard’s flags, since no original flag from before that time is known to have survived. The flags used to he striped in the Medici livery colours blue, red and yellow and had the Pope's and the commander's arms painted on them. When a Pope or commander changed, the new arms were painted covering the old ones, so the flag fabric was rarely made new. A new flag design by Robert Diirrer with a white cross throughout was accepted in 1913 and blessed by Pope Pius X on 5 May 1914. Changes of a Pope and/or commander were now reflected on the flag by cutting out the old personal emblems and replacing them bv the new ones, the basic design remaining unchanged, hut in the course of the 20th century flags were made completely new more often. Original flag photographs document the history of the guard’s flags since the middle of the 19th century until present times with the flag under Pope Benedict XVI and commander Elmar Mdder. In a second part of this work the various flags of the veteran ’s association of the Pope’s Swiss Guard, founded in 1921, are presented. -

Branding the Iconic Ideals of Vivienne Westwood, Barack Obama, and Pope Francis
PUNK, OBAMACARE, AND A JESUIT: BRANDING THE ICONIC IDEALS OF VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, BARACK OBAMA, AND POPE FRANCIS AIDAN MOIR A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION & CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2021 © Aidan Moir, 2021 Abstract Practices of branding, promotion, and persona have become dominant influences structuring identity formation in popular culture. Creating an iconic brand identity is now an essential practice required for politicians, celebrities, global leaders, and other public figures to establish their image within a competitive media landscape shaped by consumer society. This dissertation analyzes the construction and circulation of Vivienne Westwood, Barack Obama, and Pope Francis as iconic brand identities in contemporary media and consumer culture. The content analysis and close textual analysis of select media coverage and other relevant material on key moments, events, and cultural texts associated with each figure deconstructs the media representation of Westwood, Obama, and Pope Francis. The brand identities of Westwood, Pope Francis, and Obama ultimately exhibit a unique form of iconic symbolic power, and exploring the complex dynamics shaping their public image demonstrates how they have achieved and maintained positions of authority. Although Westwood, Obama, and Pope Francis initially were each positioned as outsiders to the institutions of fashion, politics, and religion that they now represent, the media played a key role in mainstreaming their image for public consumption. Their iconic brand identities symbolize the influence of consumption in shaping how issues of public good circulate within public discourse, particularly in regard to the economy, health care, social inequality, and the environment. -

Vicarius Fillii Dei
VICARIUS FILLII DEI by Campbell M Gold (2008) CMG Archives http://campbellmgold.com --()-- Vicar of the Son of God (Vicarius Filii Dei) and the Number of the Beast - 666 Is the Pope the antichrist? Many have asked this question, and many have linked the Pope with the beast/antichrist of the Book of Revelation. I n support of this hypothesis, it is suggested that the ‘number’ of the beast or antichrist, as revealed by John as 666, equates to the Pope ’s title of, ‘Vicarius Filii Dei ’ (Vicar of the Son of God). This claim was strongly presented by the Seventh-day Adventist, Uriah Smith, in his book, The United States in the Light of Prophecy : The pope wears upon his pontifical crown in jeweled letters, this title: "Vicarius Filii Dei," "Viceregent of the Son of God;" the numerical value of which title is just six hundred and sixty- six The most plausible supposition we have ever seen on this point is that here we find the number in question. It is the number of the beast, the papacy; it is the number of his name, for he adopts it as his distinctive title; it is the number of a man, for he who bears it is the "man of sin." (The United States in the Light of Prophecy, Uriah Smith, Battle Creek, Michigan: Seventh- day Adventist Publishing Association (1884), 4th edition, p.224) Papal Tiara It is suggested that the papal tiara has inscribed upon it the designation, ‘Vicarius Filii Dei ’ (Vicar of the Son of God). A protestant woman visiting Rome, in or around 1832, said that she ‘witnessed’ Pope Gregory XVI wearing a crown with the words on it Moreover, the papal tiara was routinely worn, and seen, before and after a Pontifical Mass at the Vatican, as noted in the following Catholic Encyclopaedia entry extract: Pontifical Mass The solemn pontifical Mass celebrated by the pope in St. -

ENDTIME ISSUES NEWSLETTER NUMBER 146 “The Saga of the Adventist Papal Tiara: Part 2” Samuele Bacchiocchi, Ph. D, Retired Professor of Church History and Theology, Andrews University The short introductory essay I posted in the last newsletter No. 145 about “The Saga of the Adventist Papal Tiara,” has generated an unusual number of responses. The vast majority of the comments have been very positive. In fact, some Conference Presidents have invited me to present this new research at their workers’ meeting. Elder Marvin Moore, the Editor of Signs, ordered 15 DVD albums for himself and for the chief officers of Pacific Press. But a few concerned fellow believers, expressed their deep disap- pointment over what they perceive to be a serious abandonment of a major Adventist teaching. Some evangelists are especially upset, because this study raises questions about their preaching on the Mark and Number of the Beast. Confidently they have preached for years that the number of the Beast (666) is clearly found in the pope’s title Vicarius Filii Dei, inscribed in his golden tiara. Now they are learning that recent Adventist studies raise serious questions about this popular teaching. Obviously this development is upsetting them. One could be tempted to ignore the negative reactions of a few concerned Adventists. After all, some will always disagree with any new interpretation of the Mark and Number of the Beast, no matter how true it is to the text, context, and historical setting of Revelation 13. But to totally ignore the critical arguments, would reveal a lack of pastoral concern on my part for the struggle of some fellow believers to come to terms with a new interpretation. -
Justinian's Metamorphosis from Chief of Staffs to Th
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 7, No. 1; January 2017 538 A.D. and the Transition from Pagan Roman Empire to Holy Roman Empire: Justinian’s Metamorphosis from Chief of Staffs to Theologian*1 Keum Young Ahn; Gerard Damsteegt; Edwin de Kock; Sook Young Kim; Jhung Haeng Kwon; Myun Ju Lee; Nicolas Miller; Dae Geuk Nam; Trevor O’ Reggio; William H. Shea; Alberto R. Treiyer; Koot van Wyk Emeritii, or Retired, or Active Professors and Researchers Abstract The year 538 A.D. became the turning point in the history of the Roman Empire since so many aspects on political, administrative and economical levels were already switched off that when Justinian declared himself to be a theologian from this year and no longer a soldier, he crossed the barrier of his mandate between what is purely civil obligation and what is religious obligation, similarly to Constantine before, and entered in competition with the papal function and this role is evidence of Justinian’s ongoing caesaro-papism. The quest for unification of the empire by unification of the church, the fever for church-building projects with his wife Theodora, the persecution of enemies of the church and heretics, his disdain with the Sabbath although his second name was Sabbatini, his support for suppressing any eschatological fever in line with the church fathers and Oecumenius and yet trying to build the ‘Kingdom of God’ on earth, all this indicate the problem 538 was for the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church. Archaeological and historical original sources of Justinian and contemporaries of popes, biographer of Justinian and a commentator on Revelation (Oecumenius) are very revealing of these times and the shift or transition of what belonged to the Roman Empire handed over since 538 A.D.
