GRADUATION SPEAKER Dickson B. “Doc” Hendley

Doc Hendley is the Founder and President of Wine To Water and has been named one of CNN’s Top Ten Heroes. He is a 2004 graduate of NC State University in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Communications department. Doc Hendley is proofthat anyone, even a tattooed keg-tapper, can cure what ails the world. In 2003, Hendley dreamed up the concept ofWine To Water ‘ while bartending and playing music in nightclubs around Raleigh, North Carolina. In January of 2004, he held his first fundraiser and by August was living in Darfur, , installing water systems for victims of the government-supported . When Hendley returned home in 2005, the haunting memories ofwhat he had seen in Darfur drove him to continue growing the organization he had started only two years earlier. And in 2007, after working two jobs and volunteering his time for over three years, Wine To Water became an official 501 (c)(3) and Hendley’s dream finally became a reality. Hendley’s work aims to help the 1.1 billion people worldwide who lack access to clean water, a figure estimated by the World Health Organization. Unclean water is the number one killer of children in the world, and water borne illnesses kill far more children than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. Every 15 seconds, a child dies from unclean water. In 2009, Doc Hendley was chosen as one of the Top 10 CNN Heroes by a panel of judges including General Colin Powell, Whoopi Goldberg, Ted Turner and Sir Elton John. Hendley’s book, Wine to Water: A Bartender’s Quest to Bring Clean Water to the World, is a captivating story of his experiences as an ordinary bartender who is changing the world through clean water. Rich Henning, Senior Vice President of United Water, praises Hendley and his work with Wine to Water: “There is one thing that rings true every time I get the pleasure of hearing Doc Hendley speak—his passion comes through and hits you like nothing you’ve ever experienced in your lifetime. It’s not just the way he interacts with the audience, a sort of down-home person that you seem to already know even though you don’t, but it’s the message about improving who we are as people each and every day, and helping those who have difliculty helping themselves because of places they live in or the circumstances of their country. Doc brings that message of hope and seems to naturally lift every person out of their comfort chair and into the wilds of Africa or the devastation in Haiti right alongside him. You feel everything that he feels and see everything that he saw. We are just enamored to be part of his world in a small way and hoping to work with him to better our world in a meaningful way.”

xi UNIVERSITY MACE

The NC State University Mace is carried by the chief faculty marshal, a position held by the chair of the faculty. The academic mace, derived from a medieval weapon, represents the need to pro- tect and nurture the fragile search for knowledge. The NC State University Mace has been specifi- cally designed for this community. Each aspect ofthe mace represents an important characteristic ofthe university. When freestanding, the mace is supported in a base of North Carolina stone representing the foundation ofknowledge and the dependence ofthis academic community on the support ofthe people. At the base of the mace is a brass ring with the names of individuals who have held the position of chancellor, indicating the contribution of generations of academic leaders to the for— mation and maturation ofNC State University. The long lower fluted handle is the primary means by which the mace is grasped, representing the responsibility for the stewardship of knowledge. The shorter fluted, upper handle is the primary means by which direction is shown, and therefore represents the responsibility for guardianship. A block embedded with the seal of the university on four faces represents the university commu- nity and its charge to reach out in all directions. At the top ofthe mace is a geometric progression of layers representing the continual experimentation and testing of knowledge within the NC State academic community. At the very top of the mace is a bronze prow symbolizing the con- tinual exploration that energizes our community The mace is fashioned from burled walnut recovered from a North Carolina tree felled in a storm, emphasizing the need to make wise use of resources even in difficult circumstances. The wood is a gift of the Jordan family, representing the importance of the generosity of the people of North Carolina to the university. The wood is complemented by bronze and silver fittings emphasizing the precious nature of the academic experience in society. During the course of fabrication, an error was made. After much discussion, the design team decided to make the revisions neces— sary to correct the error rather than refabricate the flawed component. This adjustment, difficult to identify, represents the valuable lessons learned from failure as an essential component ofthe university experience. The mace was designed and fabricated by a team that included College of Design Dean Marvin I. Malecha, Chris Jordan (1975, Product Design), Iack Lancaster and Jim Dean (1983, Product Design) in the College ofDesign Materials Laboratory.

xii UNIVERSITY MEDALLION The NC State University Medallion is worn by the Chancellor for ceremonial occasions such as commencement, convocations and installations. It is similar to the University Mace. Both come from ceremonies ofthe Middle Ages, during which time the modern university developed. Today, universities create medallions to commemorate special events, the contributions of exceptional individuals and recognition of those in positions of responsibility. The NC State Medallion is designed with various symbols that describe characteristics of the university. The design features two circles, one small and one large on opposite ends ofthe necklace, representing the diverse nature ofthe academic community. The large circle, which joins the chain, is inscribed with the university’s year of founding (1887) as a tribute to the vision of the founders. The necklace also consists ofetched metal plates, chained together in a whole, signifying the many voices that comprise the NC State community. The medallion hangs from the necklace and features the NC State seal, a representation ofthe responsibility and authority ofthe Chancellor. The necklace and medallion are made out of customized gold-plated brass, a strong material that represents NC State pride and the wealth ofknowledge within the university. Mary Ann Scherr was the first to design the medallion and necklace. It was redesigned by a team that included College of Design Dean Marvin I. Malecha, Chris Jordan (1975, Product Design), Iack Lancaster and Sarah Tector.

xiii ACADEMIC COSTUME Academic gowns represent a tradition handed down from the universities ofthe Middle Ages. Universities were founded by the church and students, being clerics, were obliged to wear the prescribed gowns at all times. Round caps later became square mortarboards. The hoods, originally cowls attached to the gowns, could be slipped over the head for warmth. Many European universities have distinctive caps and gowns different from those commonly used in this country. Some ofthe gowns are brightly colored and some are embellished with fur. A number ofthese may be noted in the procession. Traditionally, the color for academic gowns in the United States is black. However, many institutions have chosen to use their school color for undergraduate robes as is evidenced by the Wolfpack red you are seeing today. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed, the master’s and doctor’s may be worn open or closed. The shape ofthe sleeve is the distinguishing mark ofthe gown: bachelor’s have long pointed sleeves; master’s are oblong, square cut in the back with an arc cut away in front; doctors are bell shaped. The tassels for the PhD. degree are gold, and those for other graduate and professional degrees may correspond to the trimmings on the hoods. Ofall the components ofthe academic costume, the hood bears the heaviest symbolic burden. The hood must make clear the level ofthe degree, the faculty in which it was given, and the institution that awarded it. The level ofthe degree is shown by the size ofthe hood, the width ofthe velvet trimming, and in the case ofdoctors, by the shape. The bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s hoods are three feet, three and onevhalffeet, and four feet long, respectively. The velvet trimming in the same order is two, three, and five inches and extends all around the hood on the exposed edge. This same trimming identifies the faculty in which the degree was awarded. For each faculty there is a corresponding color; so a glance at the trimming is all that is needed to identify the faculty. The tassel for master’s candidates corresponds to the following colors: Agriculture, maize; Architecture and Art, brown; Science, golden yellow; Economics, copper; Education, light blue; Engineering, orange; Forestry, russet; Physi— cal Education, sage green; Religion, scarlet; Speech, silver gray; Veterinary Medicine, gray; Textiles, wine red. Anthro pology, History, Languages, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology are all dark blue. ACADEMIC HONORS Undergraduate degree honor designations are noted on transcripts and diplomas for the following grade point averages. Cum Laude ~ for GPA of3.250 through 3.499 (white sash) Magna Cum Laude for GPA of 3.500 through 3.749 (silver sash) Summa Cum Laude — for GPA of3.750 and above (gold sash) Students have the opportunity to participate in several programs that provide a more individualized and rigorous approach to learning through special classes, seminars, and research. Participants in the University Honors Program, University Scholars Program, the Park Scholars Program, the Caldwell Scholars Program, and college or departmental honors programs are listed in the full graduation program.
