For over a decade, the CPCC has represented copyright holders before the Copyright Board of Canada. The Board establishes the levies that may be collected after trial-like hearings where experts, representing music rights holders and organizations that represent consumers and businesses that sell leviable blank media, present evidence and are cross-examined. The private copying levy has been an important part of the Canadian copyright regime since 1999, when the first private copying tariff was certified by the Copyright Board, following amendments made to the Copyright Act (the “Act”) in 1997 to allow for a levy to be placed on blank audio recording media. Currently, the levy only applies to blank CDs and MiniDiscs, at a rate of 29 cents per unit, and is paid by manufacturers and importers of these blank media to the CPCC for distribution to rights holders. The private copying levy has provided an effective mechanism whereby consumers are allowed to make copies of music for their personal use without infringing copyright and, in exchange, music creators receive royalties that recognize the value of private copies of their work. -

Overall, the combined audience grew 5% from last year’s broadcasts among total viewers, while the primetime broadcast won its timeslot with total viewers and all key adult demos, and led the night among Teens 12-17. Hosted by Jacob Hoggard, frontman of multi-platinum selling band Hedley, the two-hour live broadcast from Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre reached 5.3 million unique viewers. In Toronto, the primetime broadcast saw double and triple digit percentage growth among total viewers and all key adult demos, more than doubling ratings among younger viewers aged 18-34. The primetime broadcast peaked with 1.7 million viewers during Hoggard’s closing performance, an interpretation of Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Alanis Morissette’s “Thank U”, where he thanked, among other things, the host city of Hamilton. Now Armey was attempting to wrest total control of FreedomWorks, the organization most responsible for repackaging rank-and-file Republican rage as the ‘Tea Party rebellion’ as well as training and coordinating its activists.1 Tea Party Patriots—a national network with several hundred affiliates—is one of its direct offshoots. As FreedomWorks’ chairperson, Armey symbolized an ideological continuity between the Republican con- gressional landslides of 1994 and 2010, the old ‘Contract with America’ and the new ‘Contract from America’. No one was better credentialed to inflict mortal damage on the myth of conservative solidarity. Only in December did the lurid details of the coup leak to the press. Great Canadian Music Creators and Publishers Honoured at 26th SOCAN Awards Toronto, June 23, 2015 – A who’s who of the Canadian music industry gathered last night in Toronto to honour Canada's most talented “Born to Be” songwriters, composers, lyricists and music publishers at the 26th SOCAN Awards. Sponsored by Gowlings, KPMG, RBC and HMV, and hosted by CMT Canada’s Paul McGuire, the SOCAN Awards recognize the lifetime and more recent achievements of Canada’s music creators, honoured in a host of categories, including Pop/Rock, Dance, Urban, Country, Jazz, Folk/Roots, Classical, and Film & Television. Recipients of SOCAN’s major achievement awards this year were the legendary Randy Bachman (Lifetime Achievement), Dallas Green (National Achievement), MAGIC! (International Achievement), music industry pioneer Bernie Finkelstein (Special Achievement), and “Born to be Wild” songwriter Mars Bonfire, who accepted SOCAN’s first-ever Cultural Impact Award. All accepted their honours in person, as did R&B chart-toppers The Weeknd and Belly, rising country stars Brett Kissel and Tim Hicks, and film and TV composers Keith Power and Andrew Lockington, among many others. Performers included soulful young sensation Francesco Yates, who sang “Better to be Loved”; heavy metal rockers Anvil, who honoured Mars Bonfire with a thundering rendition of “Born to be Wild”; Kristian Alexandrov, Olena Kilchyk, Calvin Beale and Doan Pham, who played a medley of film and TV themes; “doom soul” singer-songwriter Cold Specks, who re-defined Warren Pash’s SOCAN Classic Award-winning song “Private Eyes”; and Randy Bachman, backed by Toronto rockers Big Sugar, who closed the show with a thrilling medley of “American Woman” and “Takin’ Care of Business” – accompanied by the audience of more than 600 guests playing cowbells.
