Aleh - Nahalat Eran Groundbreaking Innovative Care for ’s Disabled

2007-2008

Caring for Israel’s disabled, together Part of the JNF family www.jnf.org Aleh was established in 1982 by a group of parents determined to give their severely What is impaired children the best available care and the opportunity to develop to their full potential.

Aleh? Their approach and steadfast commitment has since changed the face of rehabilitative care in Israel. Today, Aleh is Israel’s largest network of residential facilities for children with severe physical and cognitive disabilities. Approximately 650 children throughout the country receive state-of-the-art medical, educational and rehabilitative care in four facilities: , Gedera, and . In addition, Aleh provides some 32,000 outpatient sessions to children with milder disabilities who live at home.

Thanks to Aleh, these children are able to live in much the same way as non-disabled children: attending school, participating in vocational training programs and enjoying activities such as swimming at the beach or touring the countryside. Integration programs and activities involving family, volunteers, school children and IDF soldiers promote acceptance and inclusion of the disabled within the community at large.

As a result of the innovative therapies and services, combined with the care and devotion displayed by the staff, the children at Aleh are developing far beyond the boundaries of their initial prognoses. Aleh has succeeded in proving that within every child lies the seed of hope and potential, a spirit that can communicate, learn, and enjoy friendship, laughter and love. There comes a point in every child’s life when he makes the transition into adulthood. The Why carefree joy of childhood gives way to a newfound sense of responsibility – and the thrill of freedom and independence.

Aleh Hundreds of Aleh children have grown up, and their needs have changed. In response, Aleh has launched its most ambitious initiative yet – the construction of a rehabilitative village in Negev? the Negev designed specifically for the needs of cognitively and physically impaired people over 21 years of age.

The new 25-acre village and its multi-faceted departments are empowering young adults in Israel to interact with the outside world, develop a greater degree of independence and become productive members of Israeli society. This cutting-edge concept has set a new benchmark in the field of special education, and the facility is being studied as a model for duplication by experts worldwide.

Aleh Negev will be home to 220 residential disabled adults. It will also provide a wide range of vital therapy services to the entire southern region, enabling 12,000 children with special needs to become productive, full-fledged members of Israeli society.

With over 70 residents already living and working and studying on campus and an ultramodern Paramedical Center offering outpatient services, Aleh Negev is moving forward with a Hydrotherapy Pool, Safari Petting Zoo and continued residency. Non-disabled volunteers from the community visit daily, working with residents on various creative projects and enjoying the facility’s outdoor recreation areas together.

A $42 million dollar project, Aleh Negev has connected Israeli governmental ministries, foundations, philanthropists and individuals worldwide in a project creating hope and flourishing opportunities for integration, understanding and acceptance of special-needs people within society at large. Jewish National Fund & Aleh Negev

Far from the major cities of Israel, the entire Negev population suffers from a tremendous shortage of medical, therapeutic and special education services. All of the important work that is being done at Aleh Negev is part of Jewish National Fund’s Blueprint Negev campaign. The location of the communal rehabilitative village is even more critical given JNF’s ambitious plans for the Negev region – which currently represents 60% of Israel’s land mass but is home to only 8% of the population.

JNF Blueprint Negev is a 10-year, $600,000, far-reaching plan to ensure a prosperous and secure future for the land and people of Israel. Existing communities are being strengthened with economic opportunities and improved quality of life. By partnering with Aleh Negev, JNF will ensure that new residents have access medical and therapeutic services that have previously been denied to the Negev population.

Israel’s legendary first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, had a dream that with his people’s resilience and passion for life, the Negev could be made to bloom. In 1955 he wrote to Prime Minister Moshe Sharett, “we must direct man power and our maturing youth together with industries, factories, development projects and research institutions so that the Negev can emerge from a desolate desert to a populated, vibrant part of Israel.” Today, his prescience is undeniable. The residents of emerging Negev communities are young, highly educated professionals with young children, determined to provide a future for their families in Israel and make Ben-Gurion’s dream a reality. With the help of supporters like you, we can enable these young families to set up permanent roots and bring life to Israel’s southern region while making the Negev desert truly habitable.
