Who did you tell first at work? Charley: I told all of the girls who were my bridesmaids [Lucy Pargeter, Roxy Shahidi, Zoe Henry, Charlotte Bellamy, and Emma Atkins] before seven weeks. When it’s your third, you do. They knew we were trying and I was sick!

family. It feels different this time as it feels like we’re going from a family to a gang. We’re looking forward to the chaos another child will bring. Charley: I’m really excited. It will be nice to see Buster with the baby as he’s older now and I think he’ll be more protective than he was when Bowie was a baby. Bowie will be both a little brother and a big brother and they’re both important roles. I’m sure there’ll be times when Bowie’s jealous as he’s very much a mummy’s boy. He still gets into our bed every night. I always call it ‘our baby’ so he feels involved and the baby will get them both a present when it’s born. Hopefully they’ll be okay, but there might be tantrums!
Charley, you’re into your fitness. Have you been keeping that up? I’ve been doing Pilates. Deena Payne [who used to play Viv Hope in Emmerdale] is a great 1-2-1 Pilates teacher and I do that with her and she gives me a massage afterwards. I’ve been suffering from back pain during this pregnancy. I saw a physio who said I should try Pilates and it’s really helped. I have more aches and pains this time. My face looks different because of the water retention, too. I hate it but I remind myself that I’m lucky enough to be pregnant so I have to embrace it! Matthew: Charley rang me earlier and said: ‘I’ve just seen myself in a mirror in the Trafford Centre and I look dreadful!’ She doesn’t look different to me apart from she has a bump! TOPMAN. Charley: It’s a brutal industry and I wouldn’t want it for my own children. Anyone in the public eye gets negativity on social media and I don’t want that for my children.
Do you get flak on social media? Charley: Sometimes. Twitter seems to bring the worst out of people! I get the odd comment about my appearance or my children’s names or something. Some people have so much bitterness but they’d never say to it your face. Look at those poor people [Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis] from Love Island who are thought to have taken their own lives recently. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. I’m sure there’s other stuff going on in their own lives, but I bet they got so much abuse on social media. People don’t know the affect that has on people. I think people should just be kinder!
You’re busy on Emmerdale at the moment, aren’t you Matthew? I’ve never been as busy in the 13 years I’ve been on the show! It doesn’t look like my workload’s going to get any lighter for a while either. Then the repercussions of things that have happened are going to take me well into the end of the summer! ‘I FEEL MORE TIRED THAN I DID DURING MY PREVIOUS PREGNANCIES’
How has the abuse storyline been to film? Matthew: At the moment for me it’s not too difficult as David doesn’t have a clue that it’s going on behind his back. He’s naïve to it and he thinks his relationship is going really well, but I’ve just read some scripts of when things take a turn for the worst and that will all be quite emotional. That’s when it’s going to be difficult for me. The storyline’s set to get darker which will be hard to play, particularly because I’m a dad. We saw you at the recent TRIC Awards. You must have been pleased when Emmerdale won the Best Soap Award... Matthew: None of us could believe it! We weren’t expecting it as we won last year. We were saying we couldn’t possible win the National Television Award and the TRIC Award for Best Soap two years in a row but we did! The show was the underdog for so long and the awards bounced between EastEnders and Corrie each year and over the last five years Emmerdale’s been flying.
Claire King [who plays Kim Tate] is back on the show. Have you caught up with her? Matthew: I’ve seen her a couple of times around the building but I’ve had nothing to do with her yet. I think she’s got some big storylines coming up, but unless she comes ‘I LOVE GETTING UP EVERY MORNING AND GETTING INTO WORK’ into David’s shop for a pint of milk, I barely see people!
Do you both still love working on the show? Matthew: I absolutely adore working there and I love the people I work with. I love getting up every morning and getting into work! Charley: I do, too. I don’t know what they’ve got planned for Debbie’s exit, but I don’t think it will be anything too dramatic! I’m not sure I’ll have that long off from work. With three children, I’ll probably be ready to go back to work for a break [laughs]! OK! espite the chilly and rather breezy conditions, the Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge were given a warm welcome at King’s College DLondon last week. This was the first time Kate and the Queen have attended an official public engagement outside Buckingham Palace alone and they looked to be getting along famously, even sharing a blue blanket in the back of their chauffeured car as they arrived at the campus. Alex: We didn’t want the day to end, and I didn’t want to leave her to go on the other dates. One of the producers said to me: ‘Alex, it looks like you’re in a relationship so try to throw a curveball in there.’ I said that dating Alicia would be like dating her eight Essex friends, but I didn’t mean that. Alicia: He came rushing in and said, ‘If anything bad I’ve said has aired, it’s because they made me.’
Alicia, what was the day of Alex’s final decision like? It was so weird. I was quite calm while I was getting ready because I honestly didn’t think it was going to me. I had a chat with Mark [Wright] and he was saying: ‘Whatever happens you need to know you’ve done yourself and Essex proud. You’re going to be the nation’s sweetheart.’ He was being so nice that I thought I definitely hadn’t got it so then I started crying. When he chose me I was just so happy. I’ve watched that clip back over 100 times. Alex: Afterwards we popped a bottle of champagne on the rocks looking out on the ocean, while the crew partied behind us. For the first time the weight completely lifted off my shoulders. Alicia: The last six weeks had been so up and down and it plays with your emotions a lot. I was like: ‘I’ve got my guy now and we can go and enjoy ourselves.’
Were you an official couple as soon as you left the show? Alicia: Yeah, I wasn’t going to go through all of that and not have a boyfriend! Everything was amazing, and then we had to go back to reality. You had real life stress again. When I was on the show I could leave my flip flops on the beach and it wouldn’t even matter because someone would bring them to me [laughs]. Alex: We had to live like spies as we had to keep the relationship a secret Alex, what made you choose Alicia? I was very willing to try, but Alex struggled a bit. Alex: I did. The pressure for us both to stay inside this bubble took its toll on me. I didn’t want to hurt Alicia more if there wasn’t total clarity. Alicia: I fought to win him back. On Valentine’s Day I sent him loads of balloons – very subtle! Alex: I got some really subtle text messages, too [laughs]. Alicia: I went from ‘I’m going to win him back’, to then hating his guts. When I watched him kiss Charlotte on the show after we’d had an argument, the anger that was going through my ‘I WANTED US TO BE

What brought you back together? Alicia: I always wanted us to be together and I fight for what I want. I watched the final episodes, and that confirmed how special we were together. I’ve never felt like that before. Even through all the madness that was happening around us, when we were on our dates nothing else mattered. I knew we could be happy. Alex: It brought back really heavy emotions of joy and love for me, too. It relit a thousand emotions, and I realised how much I missed her. I knew we had to get back together. Alicia: It wasn’t that difficult for him. He asked me to go out and I said yes straight away. It should have been our honeymoon phase at the start, but we can have it now so it’s bittersweet.
How were you able to work past it all? Alicia: I didn’t blame him for thinking, ‘Is Alicia the right one for me?’ any more. Ali King and Dawn Ward were there. Are you close to them, Emilie? Emilie: I’m very close to them both. I’ve known Ali since Mum’s been in Corrie and I’ve known Dawn since I was about six. Her daughter Taylor is the same age as me and we used to hang out. It was lovely to have them there.
Emilie, you’re now 32 weeks pregnant. How are you feeling? I’m feeling great! I’ve felt good the whole way through my pregnancy. Just recently I’ve had a bit of heartburn, but aside from that I’ve felt normal the whole time. Kym: Emilie’s been so well throughout and she never complains. She’s had such a great pregnancy. I hope she has a good labour too!
Kym, is your head completely around the prospect of becoming a grandma at 42? Oh yeah! I’m looking forward to it. I’m glad I’m young enough to be able to experience my grandson’s life and have the energy to run around the garden and play football with him. Scott very much sees himself as a grandparent too. He wants the baby to call him Pop. So, I’m Emilie and her boyfriend going to be Lolly and he’s going to be Pop. Emilie, what type of grandma do you think Kym will be? I think she’ll let my son get away with murder! She’ll be one of those grandmas who goes against everything you say [laughs]. I’ll probably be trying to get him into some sort of routine and she’ll be like: ’No, let him stay up an extra hour.’
Your dad, Dave, was at the baby shower. Is it nice that he and Kym have such a great friendship? They do have a great relationship and that’s really nice to see. My family get on well with Mikey’s family too and we’re all planning to go on holiday to Spain next year as one big family. We have this sign in our house which says: ‘When you’re here, you’re family.’ That’s the quote we live by. We treat everyone like our own, and Mikey and Scott’s families are the same – they’re so family orientated too.
Is it good to see your mum so happy with Scott, Emilie? It really is. There are times when you look at your mum and all you want is for her to be happy and it’s amazing for us that she really is. Scott’s such a good guy. I feel so happy for my mum. She has her grandson coming, she’s now living in a house she loves and she’s with Scott who she loves. I think it’s only going to get better for her.

Did becoming a grandma influence your decision to take a break from Coronation Street, Kym? It’s going to give me more time to spend with my grandson and Emilie. It also means I’ll get to spend a bit more time with Polly. I can’t imagine I’ll be working most weekdays, like I am now, so it will give me more time to be at home generally. That said, who knows what’s around the corner? I might end up working every day [laughs]. Emilie: Mum works so hard, and when it’s not Corrie she’s doing charity bits. Sometimes we only really catch up at weekends but I work then sometimes too. We see each other at night but there’s not much time after you’ve had your tea! It’s going to be great for me as I’ll be on maternity leave and my son will have time to spend with his grandma.
Emilie, you’ll be living at home with Kym after your son arrives. Will it be nice to be under the same roof? Yes, and Mum absolutely cannot wait. Bringing up a baby is hard enough, let alone for someone my age, so having my mum there to support me will be a godsend. Kym: Emilie’s grateful she’s able to stay at home. It’s good that we moved house when we did as there’s room for the baby.
Have you decorated the nursery yet? Emilie: He’ll be in my room for the first six months but we’re about to decorate the nursery. We’re going to paint the walls grey and then add some star stickers. Emilie: Mikey’s got a house he’s selling at the moment. Once we’ve saved a bit, we’ll get our own place but I can see me being at Mum’s for a couple of years. I think it’s great. Do you get on well with Mikey, Kym? I do. He’s a nice guy and he loves my daughter. He idolises her and that’s all I want for my kids; someone who loves them and who will look after them, and I think he’ll do that. If he doesn’t, he’d better leave the country [laughs]. He’s also got a daughter, Polly, so he’s a daddy already, which is great as he knows what he’s doing. Emilie: Mikey would do anything for me. He’s the best and he treats me so well. He organised a lot of the baby shower and made sure I had a good day. I bought Mum and Mikey’s mum some flowers to say thank you, but I haven’t bought him anything yet! I suppose I’m giving him the best gift there is soon!
Kym, does Emilie come to you for advice on motherhood? She’s getting on with her own experience. She doesn’t want to rely on me too much as, although she’s living with me, she wants to take care of her baby. I think motherhood will come naturally to Em. She’s good with children, they gravitate towards her. Mikey’s daughter Polly loves her. Emilie: It’s so strange, they all love me [laughs]. I’ve been surrounded by kids – growing up with my sister Polly and my little brother Alyx, who’s nearly 11. And Jamie’s [Lomas] son Billy came into our lives when he was just two, so I’ve always had younger siblings. I’m all clued up!

Mikey’s an amazing dad and, for me, that’s reassuring. Everything he does is to benefit her and that’s nice to see. I know my son’s going to be treated the same way as he treats his daughter and that’s great. He’s buzzing as he’ll have one of each!
And your Polly’s going to be an auntie at eight years old... Kym: She can’t wait, she’s excited, and David will be an uncle. He’ll be a great uncle – and dad and husband. He’s single at the moment but whoever gets him will be getting a diamond of a man. Not too soon, I hope. I’d like him at home a bit longer! Emilie: They’re both excited, as is my younger brother Alyx. When he found out I was pregnant, he’d just learned at school how a baby was made and he was mortified! His mum asked him if he’d told his friends that I was pregnant and he said: ‘No, I don’t want anyone to know what my Emilie’s been doing!’ [Laughs.] He’s so excited now.
You’re eight weeks away from your due date. Have you thought of a birthing plan yet? Emilie: Not really. I’m just going with an open mind. I’m a tough cookie so I’m sure Kym and Emilie I’ll be all right. I just want to try and give with Dawn Ward birth as naturally as possible. The only thing and Ali King I have in mind is gas and air and I want to avoid having an epidural, if I can. I know it
