Arnold Goldberg When the first volume of The Annual of Psychoanalysis appeared in 1973, it was our hope that the series would become an established source for the latest thinking in psychoanalytic theory, practice, and application. This current volume is the seventeenth-and the last for which I will serve as chairman of the Editorial Committee. The Annual has, over the years, included works covering the full range of Freud's scientific humanism. And I am very pleased with what has been accomplished. I wish to take this opportunity to personally thank all of the individuals who submitted their manuscripts for our consideration, those authors who permitted us to publish their writings, the members of the Editorial Committee for their devotion to the reviewing task, and the manuscript editor and managing editor for their assistance in producing the volumes. GEDO, M.D. (Chicago) It was in the concluding chapters of "Studies on Hysteria" (Breuer and Freud, 1895) that Freud first reported his astonishing discovery that neurotic patients, when seen in psychotherapy on a daily regimen, tend to reexperience certain aspects of their past in relation to their physician. Within a few years, Freud ( 1900) realized that it is the childhood past that clamors for repetition in such a transference. Moreover, he soon concluded (Freud, 1909) that the transference consists in repeating both sides of a childhood conflict- in other words, that resistance phenomena are just as revealing about pathogenesis as are direct expressions of infantile wishes. In 1914, when he prepared his rebuttals of the criticisms of his theories by skeptics such as Adler and Jung, Freud specified that pure "transfer­ ence neuroses" can only be expected to develop in the course of analyses with patients whose childhood development had culminated in an "infantile neurosis." Whenever the vicissitudes of early life led to alternative possibilities- the contingencies Freud then conceptualized as an excessive shift in the direction of "narcissism"-he conceded that psychoanalytic treatment could not succeed, precisely because the avail­ ability of the analyst would fail to evoke infantile love and hatred and the defenses against them. As I believe I demonstrated in a recent book on the history of dissidence within psychoanalysis (Gedo, 1986), the most significant clinical controversies since Freud's reformulation of his theories in the early 1920s-the revision necessitated by the realization that his initial Presented as a Plenary Address at the Eleventh Regional Conference of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Society, March 19, 1988. 3 4 An Epistemology of Transference hypotheses could not account for many forms of adaptive disorder­ revolved around the issue of the appropriate treatment of cases wherein a transference neurosis either did not occur at all or, if it did manifest itself to some degree, did not constitute the most significant determinant of the pathology. To summarize the history of these still unresolved disputes: A more conservative faction of analysts generally advocates the standardization of psychoanalytic technique, the application of stringent criteria of analyzability in patient selection, and meticulous attention to those ancillary conflicts that tilt the balance in the direction of regression from the vicissitudes of an infantile neurosis toward more archaic adaptive equilibriums. This has been the position of those with more modest therapeutic ambition, such as Freud himself (1937), later Anna Freud ( 1965), and the school of "ego psychology" (e.g. , Hartmann, 1964; Hartmann, Kris, and Loewenstein, 1964). Due to the early influence of Sigmund Freud on the "new psychiatry," the child guidance movement, and, of course, the practice of psycho- analysis, and because the vast majority of alternative treatment modalities—from Fritz Perls's Gestalt therapy to Salvador Minuchin's family systems approach— were founded by psychoanalysts, psychotherapy in this country has always borne the imprint of Freud's basic developmental theories that privilege the phallus, the Oedipus complex, and the role of the father. In the past 10 to 15 years this imprinting has begun to . be reexamined and re- thought. While such theoretical scrutiny and willingness to challenge orthodoxy certainly is not new to the field, up until now it has been the intellectual property of the dissenters and outlaws within psychoanalysis in the United States. From Carl Jung and Sandor Ferenczi to Franz Alexander and Harry Stack Sullivan, men who challenged Freud and his fundamental principles were relegated to the pe- riphery of the discourse and profession in this country.

    38 Oral History in the Freud Archives: Incidents, Ethics, and Relations Laura Cameron his paper, reflecting on a more or less successful collaborative attempt to have the record of a dream from the Sigmund Freud Archives re- T leased and published, explores the notion that archival work might be enriched in various ways by adopting some of the sensibilities of oral history methodology. In the course of addressing the utility of this methodology in archival work, uncertainties arise involving issues of responsibility, respect, and confidentiality. Research positioned in a fluid community process that recognizes power relations between researcher and researched as well as schol- arly responsibilities to living, vulnerable people opens the archive to both risks and gains in reworking and explicitly addressing the social life of stories. The notion has relevance for historical geographers because they are tra- ditionally archive users who need to be sensitive to research materials and their contexts. Indeed, in the course of archival work, they do not unusually become privy to unpublished personal, perhaps revelatory, information. In certain archives, the issue of confidentiality is rarely understood as problem- atic once material has been deposited in the archive. Concerns about fair and proper use generally arise with the possibility of publication and only then in terms of legalities surrounding copyright legislation. On the other hand, many archives now have quite stringent conditions on use of materials; for instance, the access rules for the University College London Special Collections state that “In general, a 30-year closure period is applied to personal papers, 80 years for student and staff records, and 100 years for personal medical records.”1 Furthermore, historical geographers are paying increasing attention to the reinvention of biography.

Wallerstein: A Conversation Luca Di Donna Dr. Wallerstein, in speaking with Virginia Hunter (2007), you said that you had come to the United States with your fa- ther from Germany at a very young age. Can you tell me about that period in your life? Robert S. Wallerstein Well, I was a two-year-old when I came to America. I was born in 1921, during the terrible post-World War I period when inflation destroyed Germany economically for several years. My father was a resident in medicine at the Charité Krankenhaus in Berlin and had intended to stay in Germany, but his money was wiped out by the inflation. He had two possibilities for work: to go to Persia and become the court physician to the governor of one of the provinces (who had been a patient of his in the army) and his family, who were related to the Shah, which he declined because of travel difficulties—a several-day camel ride from Tehran to the provincial capital, which my fa- ther deemed too arduous for his wife and one-year-old son—or to try to come to the United States. He decided to answer a New York Times newspaper ad for a physician’s assistant in gastroenterology; and once hired, he moved to New York. Within a year, he had saved enough money to bring me and my mother to join him. Of course, German was my language at that time (I was two years old), and I con- tinued to speak German at home until I entered kindergarten.
