North Mississippi Allstars: up and Rolling
North Mississippi Allstars: Up and Rolling A forgotten roll of film inspired a musical accompaniment, the North Mississippi Allstars’ new record Up and Rolling. Shot before the turn of the century, the photographs resonate with the music of four families from the Mississippi hills. The album captures the communal spirit upon which the band was founded. In 1996, a photographer from Texas, Wyatt McSpadden, traveled to North Mississippi looking to photograph local musicians. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson had grown up just south of Memphis and cut their teeth playing experimental rock & roll together, as well as the roots repertoire pioneered by their father, Jim Dickinson, a legendary producer (Big Star, the Replacements) and session player (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan). Their feet were firmly planted in the North Mississippi mud and music scene, and they were excited to show Wyatt around their community, to introduce him to the musical families of Otha Turner, RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. Their first stop was Otha Turner’s farm. Then in his late eighties, he was the last living fife and drum musician in the hills—“and a friend to all,” Luther exclaims. “He looked sharp that day, still in his Sunday best and ready for a good time.” They all sat together on Otha’s fabled front porch, which was something like a classroom for the elder Dickinson brother. The two would sit for hours, the kid playing guitar while the old man made up lyrics on the spot. That’s how “Call That Gone” came into the world, decades before the Allstars recorded it for Up and Rolling. -

Pressemitteilung Zu North Mississippi Allstars
“The images stopped me in my tracks and blew my mind”, sagt Luther Dickinson. “The music that changed our lives was captured in these photographs. Cody and I wanted to set the music free and record an album to accompany these photographs illustrating what Mississippi music sounded like in 1996 — and what it sounds like now.” North Mississippi Allstars 26.05.2021 Mojo Club, Hamburg Der VVK startet am 16.10.2020. -

© Matthieu FAURE – Brenda TURNNIDGE Wherever they play, Boney Fields and The Bone’s Project leave behind them a lasting impression. Like a high energy gunpowder trail, dispensing a cross of blues and funk which unites and rallies the masses in a heavenly musical communion. Fronted by the dynamic, trumpet player, singer/songwriter Boney Fields, the combo has gained a bigger and bigger following. The bowler-hatted musician has come a long way since founding his own band, ten years ago. If he comes from Chicago Blues, he has expanded the contours with an iron willed determination. A lover of soul, groove, jazz, Boney Fields knows, as do certain other musicians of his generation, that the life of blues exists through constant evolution and rejuvenation. With humility and conviction, he follows his own path finding his own originality on the way. A man resolutely of his time, yet also immersed in the heritage of his musical forefathers, Boney Fields proves that the blues still has some great days ahead of it. Romain GROSMAN (Vibrations – Jazz News – Les Inrocks …) CHANGING FOR THE FUTURE BIOGRAPHY Boney Fields hails from the Chicago ghetto, where he was born at the end of the fifties. “Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago. -
