“The images stopped me in my tracks and blew my mind”, sagt Luther Dickinson. “The music that changed our lives was captured in these photographs. Cody and I wanted to set the music free and record an album to accompany these photographs illustrating what Mississippi music sounded like in 1996 — and what it sounds like now.” • North Mississippi Allstars: up and Rolling
North Mississippi Allstars: Up and Rolling A forgotten roll of film inspired a musical accompaniment, the North Mississippi Allstars’ new record Up and Rolling. Shot before the turn of the century, the photographs resonate with the music of four families from the Mississippi hills. The album captures the communal spirit upon which the band was founded. In 1996, a photographer from Texas, Wyatt McSpadden, traveled to North Mississippi looking to photograph local musicians. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson had grown up just south of Memphis and cut their teeth playing experimental rock & roll together, as well as the roots repertoire pioneered by their father, Jim Dickinson, a legendary producer (Big Star, the Replacements) and session player (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan). Their feet were firmly planted in the North Mississippi mud and music scene, and they were excited to show Wyatt around their community, to introduce him to the musical families of Otha Turner, RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. Their first stop was Otha Turner’s farm. Then in his late eighties, he was the last living fife and drum musician in the hills—“and a friend to all,” Luther exclaims. “He looked sharp that day, still in his Sunday best and ready for a good time.” They all sat together on Otha’s fabled front porch, which was something like a classroom for the elder Dickinson brother. The two would sit for hours, the kid playing guitar while the old man made up lyrics on the spot. That’s how “Call That Gone” came into the world, decades before the Allstars recorded it for Up and Rolling.

Leading the festivities was party leader and Presi- dent Xi Jinping, who reviewed the troops both from through a standing position in his limousine and the viewing platform above iconic Tiananmen Gate. Following the show of military might, the parade continued with floats representing the vast nation’s far-flung regions and key events such as the opening of the economy in the 1980s, the return of Hong Kong and Macau to China in the late 1990s and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bands played and choirs sang, while dancers waved colorful fans and bouquets. Military aircraft flew overhead, leaving colorful contrails in their wake, while balloons were released in a final flourish. The event was engineered to direct credit for Chi- na’s achievements on the ruling party, which has built the country into the world’s second-largest economy and an increasingly assertive world power, while crushing all political opposition and strictly limiting civil liberties.

  • TGGBS President's Message
TGGBS Newsletter June 2020__#9 TGGBS President’s Message: Hello blues music fans, I think we all can agree that the last few weeks have been the worst in our American experience. All of us at The Golden Gate Blues Society mourn the loss of any friends, loved ones, or family due to the Corona Virus. We also sympathize with the unemployed, those that suffer from the uncertainties, loss of comforts, safety, and even the rituals we love. Black lives and culture have, of course, always mattered to TGGBS, and we hope for an end to systemic racism in America. Blues here in the Bay Area is made up of a diverse family of artists and fans alike, so we send out our love to everyone during this difficult time. Despite all the destruction that we see and feel, Space X’s Endeavor landed its recyclable rocket and docked successfully with the space station, proving that our greatest challenges can still be met and accomplished. TGGBS had our first ZOOM meeting resulting in two new board directors: Tia Carroll, who is taking on membership, and Sheri Jones, who will help with media. TGGBS also has two new partners: TGGBS founder Vince Caminiti, who is building a sleek, attractive, and easy to use new website & Daryl Hawkins, who has created a new Bay Area blues calendar. Jack's Blue's Clues was a labor of love for the irreplaceable and now deceased Jack Cohen. The Golden Gate Blues society has partnered with Daryl Hawkins to continue Jack’s legacy. Donations to assist us in funding Daryl's work can be made @ TGGBS.org.
