Introduction Athletics is the collection of most common and widely played sports and games which require the athletes to do certain physical tasks like running, walking, jumping and throwing. Most of the athletic events require specific tracks and fields.

There is a set of strict rules which each athlete has to follow in order to participate in the athletic games. Winner of these games are usually decided by time or by the distance covered. As there is no specific equipment required to run or jump, anyone can easily participate in athletic games. Athletics can be an individual and a team sport as well. Ancient History: Athletics is the oldest sport known to the mankind. There are evidences of

athletic events being organised in ancient Egypt and Greece. Modern History: In 1880, The Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) was found. It was the first body for sports and athletics. In first modern Olympics in 1896, athletics competition was introduced. Originally only men participated in those events. But later from 1928, women were allowed to participate in the events.

Governing body: In 1912, an international organizational and governing body International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) was found. In 2001, it was renamed to International association of athletics federation. IAAF has set certain rules regarding the intake of certain drugs by the athletes to improve their performance as well as their conduct on and off the field.

Various athletic games tournaments 1. Olympics: Olympics were organized for the 1st time in 1896 and are organized once in every four years except for the years 1916, 1940 and 1944. In these years, Olympics were not organized due to WW1 and WW2 respectively. Athletes from any country can

participate in the Olympics.

6. Throwing: In this type of events, the athlete has to throw an object. Athlete who throws the object for the longest distance wins. Discus, Shot put, hammer throw and javelin are few of the throwing games.

Famous Indian athletes 1. : He was born on 20n Nov 1929. He was in Indian army when he started to take interest in running. He used to represent India in 200m, 400m and held many Indian national records for many years. He was the first Indian athlete to win gold medal in Asian games and commonwealth games both. Athletics can also be a good career option. 5. Athletics also help you to secure a job under sports- quota.

Conclusion Athletic games are very easy to play and don’t require any expensive equipment. It is very easy to participate in the athletic games as these games are held from school level to the international level. Athletics don’t only help to improve fitness but also in the other aspects of life. Even if one does not win, being an athlete never has any negative impact. Athletic games also provide other career opportunities. So everyone should participate in athletic games in order to live a healthy and balanced life.
