Wrestling has unique position among Olympic disciplines in India, from being provider of first individual medal to newly independent nation to lately becoming most significant contributor in medal tally. This coming of age of Indian wrestling team with double medal tally in the last Olympics has been outcome of long and steady journey of Indian wrestling team over a period of 40-50 years and numerous Summer Olympic Games. However, this journey of Indian wrestling team in the Olympics is also a story of significant twist and turn, near misses and also of glory. So this article covers the entire saga of Indian wrestlers at highest sporting event of world—Olympic Games, from inception of first Indian team of mere three grapplers to latest Olympics with debut of first Indian female grappler in Olympic arena. This history is written by sweat and hard work of Indian grapplers with its own highs and lows. India, a country with second largest population, has struggled to win medals at Olympics. India dominated the hockey field in which it has won eight gold medals so far. But after 1980 Moscow Olympics, the hockey team failed to snatch a single medal. India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, with a lone athlete Norman Pritchard. The nation first sent a team to the Summer Olympic Games in 1920, and has participated in every Summer Games since then. India has so far won 9 gold medals, 6 silver and 11 bronze medals, a total of 26 medals in 30 Olympics Games. In the 1900 Paris Olympics, Norman Pritchard won silver medals in the 200m and the 200m hurdles. Between 1928 and 1980, Indian hockey team won 8 gold medals (1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, 1980). These were the only medal for India during that period. In the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, besides the gold from Indian men's hockey team, Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav won a bronze in men's wrestling freestyle bantamweight category. India won silver in men's hockey in 1960. In 1968 and 1972, men's hockey team managed to clinch bronze medals. The award is named after Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India who served the office from 1984 to 1989. It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The recipient(s) is/are selected by a committee constituted by the Ministry and is honoured for their "spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports over a period of four years" at international level. As of 2017, the award comprises a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of 7.5 lakh (US$11,000). Instituted in 1991–92, the award was given for the performance by a sportsperson in a year. Based on the suggestions provided by 2014 award selection committee, the Ministry revised the criteria in February 2015 to consider the performance over a period of four years. The nominations for a given year are accepted till 30 April or last working day of April with not more than two sportspersons nominated for each sports discipline. A twelve-member committee evaluates the performances of a sportsperson at various International events like Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. -

Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Sports Minister Col Rathore says Sportspersons have amazing capacity to do well in every discipline Ministry of Sports felicitates CWG medal winners with cash awards Minister of State (I/C) Youth Affairs and Sports Col Rajyavardhan Rathore has said that our sportspersons have amazing capacity to do well in every sport and not just in skill based games. At a function to felicitate the medal winning sportspersons of the recently held Commonwealth Games 2018 here today he said Sportspersons are ambassadors of the country, role models of the youth and every Indian feels proud of them. Terming sports as a soft power, Rathore said “we don’t fund any of the soft powers such as films, cuisine and culture but we fund you”. He further made it clear that there is no dearth of funds for sports but every penny has to be used to its optimum. About 56 sportspersons from 9 sports disciplines including Mary Kom, Mirabai Chanu, Neeraj Chopra, Sumit Mallik, Sushil Kumar, Vinesh Phogat, Rahul Aware, Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Deepika Pallikal , Sourav Ghosal, Vikas Krishan, Gaurav Solanki, Manu Bhaker, Jitu Rai, Tejaswini Sawant, Heena Sidhu, Manika Batra and others were felicitated with cash awards at the function. ‘5’ pib.nic.in PRESS INFORMATION BUREAU GOVERNMENT OF INDIA ***** Prime Minister to address NHRC Silver Jubilee function tomorrow New Delhi: October 11, 2018 The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India is completing 25 years of its existence with its 26th Foundation Day tomorrow, October 12, 2018. The Commission was set up on the 12th October, 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act, passed by Parliament. Extended Silver Jubilee celebrations, spilling over three days, are being organized to mark the occasion. This begins with a special function at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi tomorrow which will be addressed by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi as the Chief Guest in the august presence of the Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh and the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Communications, Shri Manoj Sinha. A commemorative first day postal cover and stamp will be released besides the launching of a new version of the NHRC website on the occasion. On Saturday, the 13th October, 2018 from 04.00 pm to 08.15 pm, the Commission is organizing a ‘Human Rights Mela’ and ‘Human Rights Street Theatre Festival’ at the amphitheatre arena of Central Park, Rajiv Chowk (Connaught Place), New Delhi. The cultural extravaganza, open for public, will be inaugurated by NHRC Chairperson, Shri Justice H.L. Dattu. The street theatre festival will begin from 6.00 pm. INDIAN OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER | JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH 2020 From the President’s Desk Dear IOA Members and Colleagues, As you are all aware, an unprecedented situation confronts the world today due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These are testing times and we need to be brave and disciplined. In these challenging times, the safety and well-being of our athletes is of utmost importance and all support must be extended to ensure the same. It is also heartening that a large number of IOA members have pledged support towards the PM Cares Fund for the cause of our nation’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. This truly magnanimous and generous response from our National Sports Federations, State Olympic Associations and Executive Council Members is extremely heartening in this time of need and I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you. Due to the constantly changing environment and the resulting postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the new dates for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad have been announced and they are scheduled to be held from 23 July 2021 to 8 August 2021. I am sure that all Olympic NSFs have shared communication about the postponement with their qualified and probable athletes. I congratulate all athletes who have achieved Tokyo Olympic qualification in the last quarter. I hope you will work towards bettering your sporting performance in the run up to the Games. Further, in view of this postponement, I request the NSFs to start planning towards our Olympic goal once the remaining Olympic qualification events are announced and the prevailing situation due to COVID-19 normalises.
