September 14, 2015, Issue 465 2015 Fantasy Label Draft The third annual Country Aircheck Fantasy Label Draft took place last month in cyberspace, with six radio pros selecting top artists and executives to stock the roster of their own fantasy record company. Each team has a Female Artist, Male, Duo/Group, Rookie (never had a No. 1), Label President and VP/Promotion. Like the past two years, there is no season and no scoring – the draft itself is the point of the exercise. Although, should one of this year’s owners draft as well as last year’s effort from WEZL/Charleston PD Tyler Reese, they’ll likely get a shout out in next year’s story. Reese’s 2014 artist selections were Kelsea Ballerini (Female), (Male), Little Big Town (Duo/Group) and Sam Hunt (Rookie). This year’s six intrepid team owners Charlie Cook are WKDF & WSM-FM/Nashville OM/PD Charlie Cook; iHeartMedia/Phoenix SVPP Steve Geofferies; WFMS/Indianapolis Brice Of Fame: Curb’s Lee Brice takes his Jäger Tour to Los PD Scott Lindy; CBS Radio/Houston VPP Angeles. He’s pictured with (l-r) winner Sara Bernal, the label’s Bruce Logan; KZPK/St. Cloud, MN MD Lori Hartigan, Big Time’s Jackie Stevens and Whitney Allen and Brook Stephens and Rubber City/Akron winner Maureen Bernal. VP/OD Sue Wilson. And a lively bunch they are, as Cook indicated in his reply to the initial draft inquiry, copying all, “Thank Steve 50 States of “Hey!” you, Chuck, for inviting me to participate in Geofferies When his production manager Wayne Pauley pointed out this prestigious event. And to my esteemed they’d traveled to nearly every state this year including Hawaii and team owners: F--- you.” Alaska, Curb’s Lee Brice became a man on a mission to make Lindy describes the conversation as, “Little it to all 50. “Wayne’s been all over the world; taunts here and there that morphed into a slowly he’s a tour veteran,” says Brice. “He said, twisting eddy of shameless taunts picking up ‘Man, it’s actually a pretty big deal and you speed and brutality as they progressed into a never know if you’re going to get a chance to whirling fireball of smack talk the likes of which do it again.’ We have a competitive spirit out sting to this day. I cannot bear to re-live any of here and just said, ‘Heck yeah, let’s do it.’” it. (Except that one part in round four. I cut and Brice’s manager Enzo DeVincenzo pasted that into my personal files. September 14, 2015 Page 3 “Within two days she had it all mapped out,” says DeVincenzo. “It was turned around really quick. Lee was blown away. When I called him, he told his band and crew and I could hear them whooping and hollering in the background.” A good location on short notice was the main challenge. “We tried to find the right fit in each market,” says DeVincenzo. “Timing was an issue, because some venues where we’d normally play weren’t available, so we had to make do with a smaller club.” “If we had a day off, we figured out where to do a show at a venue in a town that we were going through already,” adds Brice. “There was a little bit of travel that wasn’t planned, a couple of flights. But it really worked out.” Brice’s production was also a consideration. “We’re going to have to do a couple of these shows stripped-down,” says DeVincenzo. “Some of them are bars we played five years ago that we’ve outgrown. But we’ll come back in and do a more intimate show – which Lee loves doing anyway.” Five years ago, Brice might have been worried about filling those bars. Now, when he played the 500-capacity Boot Hill in Rhett Alert: Valory’s Thomas Rhett gathers his Boston radio Gillette, WY Aug. 4, Brice says it was “shoulder to shoulder, all the friends to celebrate No. 1 “Crash and Burn.” Pictured (l-r) are way to the back.” Ben Brophey and friend, Brad Uhlmann and husband WBWL’s Lance Houston, WKLB’s Mike Brophey, Rhett, WKLB’s Ginny Brice and his team already tour an average of 180 dates a Rogers and WBWL’s Colton Bradford and friend Elli Cowles. year, so adding more dates means more time away from their families. But he says playing these smaller venues has brought more than just a feather in his cap. away from home. That’s the only part that sucks. But the rest of it – “These shows have ended up being very impactful,” says Brice. yeah, we want to do it again and again. It’s really cool.” “I didn’t even think about that when we started planning to do this. –Wendy Newcomer Every show matters. But sometimes, these places we’re playing, you might not have ever gone there. So when you do, [the fans] are so Chart Chat appreciative. Those shows have been extra special. September 14, 2015 Page 9 Post-draft analysis finds several issues. “Charlie Cook ticked me A D D D AT E S off (as he’s been doing for nearly two decades) because Carrie was going to be my first round pick,” Logan says. “He also picked Old Dominion as Group and they would have been a great choice SEPTEMBER 21 for Rookie. Alabama/Wasn’t Through Lovin’ You Yet (BMG) “The label choices were hard,” he continues. “I thought about Craig Morgan/When I’m Gone (Black River) taking [Curb’s] Ryan Dokke because after the years we spent Joe Nichols/Freaks Like Me (Red Bow) together in Charlotte, I am used to him letting me down. And I’m MATT GARY/It’s On You (in2une) a little surprised no one drafted [BMLG’s] Scott Borchetta. He was SAM HUNT/Break Up In A Small Town (MCA) my first choice as reality TV star, but then I realized there wasn’t a Zac Brown Band/Beautiful Drug (SouthrnGrnd/Varvatos/ category for that.” BMLG) Cook calls his lineup “a record company’s dream come true. A great administrative staff and kick-butt artists who will probably SEPTEMBER 28 set sales records in the next 12 months. Already my girl Carrie is a record breaker with this single.” ABI ANN/Truck Candy (in2une) Not so fast, old man. “I’m confident I have a team that will be DUSTIN LYNCH/Mind Reader (Broken Bow) a strong contender and definitely give Charlie a run for his money, LAUREN ALAINA/Next Boyfriend (19/Mercury/Interscope) even if it means I’m passing him on his motorized cart from the THOMAS RHETT/Die A Happy Man (Valory) outside lane,” Stephens says. Most owners tab Team Geoffries as being particularly strong. “I OCTOBER 15 think we left some big names on the table,” Geofferies says. GRANGER SMITH/Backroad Song (Wheelhouse) “None of them are weak but Bruce’s list looks to have a big year. Solid picks.” Cook adds, “No comment on the weakest Send yours to [email protected] except to say Bruce Logan will probably mismanage his squad.” Wilson describes her team as, “Talented newcomers, seasoned veterans, and soon to be the next superstars led by a label exec and VPP to corner all sections of the market.” As for the overall experience, Lindy says, “I’m scarred to the degree that only absolute victory will assuage. We should do this every week!” Stephens says, “There might be brownies in the mail to a few people and I’m pissed I didn’t get invited to senior night at the buffet with Wilson and Cook!” The latter grumps, “Don’t ever ask me to do this again.”
