Southern rock band plays rock, roll ‘in the name of democracy’ at GTMO

southern rock group visited Naval Station (NS) Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to entertain service members and their families with concerts at the Downtown Lyceum and Windjammer Ballroom, June 25 and 26. Saving Abel, a band from Corinth, Miss., are on their third United Services Organization (USO) tour. Before visiting AGuantanamo Bay, the band performed in Kuwait, Iraq, and onboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). Amiee MacDonnell, community activities director for Guantanamo Bay Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), said the community turn-out far exceeded her expectations. “The buzz around having such a famous act on island provided lots of positive feedback from those in attendance, and having celebrity entertainment perform their hits made for a quality event,” said MacDonnell. Jared Weeks, Saving Abel lead vocalist, said both shows were a success and expressed the band’s gratitude toward the community for the warm reception. “We wouldn’t be anything without each and every one of you serving in the military and we owe you a lot,” said Weeks. “It’s one of our responsibilities as entertainers and Americans to shake your hand and say we appreciate all that you do.” Saving Abel went on a USO tour last summer while working on their latest album, said Weeks.
