Ideological pendulums in Europe and North America swing precariously between discourses of humanism and protectionism; industry and ecology; wealth and disparity. Through the unaccountable politics of power URBAINEwe have unwittingly created a world of decadence, which is only now admitting its vice. These conflicts can manifest in us a deep sense of doubt and fear. Where is our erstwhile confidence in those humanistic convictions of liberty, fraternity, equality? Where are our cultural values, and our faith in their infallibility? The words of the author Yann Martel come to mind: “[Fear] is life’s only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life… You must fight hard to shine the light of words upon it. Because if you don’t… your fear becomes a wordless darkness.” Against such a global backdrop of turmoil, we contrast a period of civic milestones: In 2016 Montréal celebrates 50 years since the inauguration of the metro and the dawn of modernity in Quebec. 2017 marks the 375th birthday of Montréal, and 150 years since Canadian Confederation. We ask ourselves: what responsibility do we have to mediate between the local and global in our artistic programming, and what effects might these decisions have on the feelings and reactions of our audience? Might we recall our past idealism to shine light on the doubt and fear of our present? 04 We open our season with one of the essential works of the 20th century, past.
