His academic degrees include the Diplom in Political Science from the Freie Universität Berlin and, at Columbia University, New York, the Certificate in Russian Studies, an M.A. and a Ph.D. ‘with distinction’. He has held teaching and/or research positions at different institutions in several countries, including the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and Harvard University’s Russian Research Center. From 1997 until 2007 he was Senior Research Associate at the Research Institute for International Politics and Security, Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, in Berlin. He has published extensively, both books and articles in academic journals, including Imperial Overstretch: Germany in Soviet Policy from Stalin to Gorbachev.
