    Riverside – Lost’n’Found – Live in Tilburg (51:36 + 52:19, CD, Vinyl, DVD, InsideOut / Sony Music, 2020) Das erste offizielle Live-Album von Riverside mit leichter zeitlicher Verspätung und das aus gutem Grund. Ursprünglich war dieser Live-Mitschnitt der polnischen Progressive Rocker bisher nur als limitierte Fanclub-Veröffentlichung erhältlich. Mitgeschnitten im legendären 013 im niederländischen Tilburg im Rahmen der 2015er Tour zum damals aktuellen Album „Love, Fear And The Time Machine“, dokumentiert dieser Auftritt die mitreißende Live-Power, die das polnische Quartett in der Besetzung Mariusz Duda (Gesang, Bass), Piotr Grudziński (Gitarre), Piotr Kozieradzki (Schlagzeug) und Michał Łapaj (Keyboards, Gesang) auf die Bühne bringt. Beziehungsweise brachte. Denn es handelte sich ja leider um die letzte Tour mit Originalgitarrist und Gründungsmitglied Piotr Grudziński, der im nachfolgenden Jahr auf tragische Weise verstarb. Die Aufarbeitung seines Todes war für die Band ein längerer Prozess, was auch sicherlich den Umstand erklärt, warum man so lange auf eine offizielle Veröffentlichung warten musste. Doch ist „Lost’n’Found – Live in Tilburg“ nun in unterschiedlichen Formaten, nämlich als limitiertes Mediabook (2CD+DVD), sowie als Gatefold 3-fach-LP in verschiedenen Farben bei den unterschiedlichen Vertriebspartnern erhältlich. Bei der 13 Songs umfassenden Setlist stehen logischerweise „Love, Fear And The Time Machine“, sowie der 2013er Vorgänger „Shrine Of New Generation Slaves“ jeweils mit vier Titeln im Vordergrund, jedoch werden ebenfalls einige ältere Stücke integriert. Zwar fehlt der mitreißende Longtrack ‚Second Life Syndrome‘, dafür bekommt z.B. ‚Conceiving You‘ beim ruhigen Beginn etwas Blues-Touch verliehen, während das Intro von ‚Panic Room‘ Jimi Hendrix-Gedächtnis-Groove und funkigen Vibe enthält.

Vocalist / violinist Katarzyna Dziubak guests on two tracks. As the group´s name ("The Big Lebowski" – Joel Coen´s 1998 brilliant movie – a non- confirmed guess?) and the album´s title / subtitle suggest, the band is deeply involved with cinematography and indeed the album´s Prog / Ambient vistas should be ideal as soundtracks, but they do hold their ground as a great stand-alone instrumental album. The music is beautifully melodic and rich, with layers upon layers of instrumental sound placed one of top of another, creating a full-body sound. The usage of various keyboards is tasteful and manages to avoid "overdoing", which usually plagues most keyboard-oriented albums. The guitar plays most of the leads, changing its sound from delicately acoustic to heavy-metal, but never being obtrusive. Bass and drums keep the massive sound together beautifully, gluing everything to perfection. The musical themes are diverse and present a wide spectrum of harmonic approaches and rhythmic subtleties, keeping the listener on his toes for the entire duration of the album.

To many, his suicide was the most significant event in the history of Dutch pop music of the 20th century. Ten years without Brood, but he still lives on: His music, an impressive art collection and, last but not least, the story of his life, have made him immortal. Herman Brood (1946-2001) was an "enfant terrible" and a cultural figure whose suicide only strengthened his controversial status. According to his friends, he could not cope with his failure to kick his drug and alcohol habit. Herman was called "the Netherlands' greatest and only rock'n'roll star." Later in life he became also a well-known painter. He set up his atelier in Amsterdam, and it became his second home. Herman Brood was born on November 5, 1946 in Zwolle in the eastern part of Holland. In 1959 the Dutch 'icon to be' got his first piano lessons. In school he was rather slow. He was more into playing the piano at his father's abandoned factory building.

    Rock and Roll has Tender Moments too... ! Photographs by Chalkie Davies 1973-1988 ! For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. That they even might be worthy of a Museum. So when the Museum approached me three years ago with the idea of a large six month Retrospective in 2015 I agreed, and thought of doing the usual thing and making a Catalogue.

    Riverside – Wasteland (50:58, CD, InsideOut / Sony Music, 2018) Der epische Vorgänger „Eye Of The Soundscape“ stand komplett im Zeichen des Abschieds des viel zu früh verstorbenen Gitarristen Piotr Grudziński. Beim siebten Studioalbum „Wasteland“ gingen Riverside nun zum ersten Mal als Trio ins Studio. Zwar hat man für das Liveumfeld mit dem Quidam Gitarristen Maciej Meller eine ebenfalls menschlich passende Ergänzung gefunden, im Studio fungiert dieser aktuell jedoch lediglich als Gast. Beim aktuellen Album spielte er als persönlichen Beitrag einen Großteil der Gitarrensoli ein. Ansonsten übernimmt vor allem Mariusz Duda weitgehend die instrumentale Last. So fühlt sich dieser nicht nur wie gewohnt für Gesang und Bass zuständig, sondern liefert zudem die kompletten Gitarrenparts ab; bei zwei Songs (‚Lament‘, ‚Wasteland‘) betätigt er sich sogar als Solist am Sechssaiter. Daneben liefert Keyboarder Michał Łapaj wie gewohnt ein breites, meist analoges Spektrum von Synthesizer, Rhodes Piano und Hammond Organ, während Piotr Kozieradzki souverän hinter der Schießbude sitzt. YouTube Videos zukünftig nicht mehr blockieren. Video laden „Wasteland“ ist in vielerlei Hinsicht ein Neubeginn. Es klingt wie kein bisheriges Riverside Album, ist aber dennoch eindeutig als Riverside Album identifizierbar. Die Veränderungen liegen nicht nur im Gitarrensound, auch inhaltlich wirkt vieles emotionaler, düsterer, wesentlich erdiger, vom direkten Prog Metal Einflüssen der Vergangenheit ist nicht sehr viel übrig geblieben. Umrahmt von dem von der Stimme getragenen Opener ‚The Day After‘, sowie dem melancholischen, spartanisch instrumentierten ‚The Night Before‘ decken die sieben Songs dazwischen eine recht breite Palette ab.

    STEVEN WILSON – To The Bone Tour – Berlin, Tempodrom – 05. Februar 2019 - Text und Fotos: Holger Ott STEVEN WILSON, ein recht unscheinbarer Typ mit einem ebenso unscheinbaren Namen. Dennoch steckt hinter dieser kleinen hageren Gestalt ein absolut musikalisches Genie. Ein Mann, der in der Perfektion aufgeht und inzwischen seine Finger fast überall im Spiel hat, was progressive Musik angeht. Er ist in erster Linie Musiker, singt, spielt Gitarre und Keyboard, ist aber auch Produzent, gelernter Toningenieur und in den letzten Jahren der 'Master Of Remaster'. Aufgrund seiner akribischen Genauigkeit wurde er unter anderem von IAN ANDERSON (JETHRO TULL) angeheuert, um dessen gesamten Backkatalog zu überarbeiten. WILSON hat also mehr als genug Arbeit am Hacken. Trotzdem hat er noch genügend Zeit, um alle paar Jahre ein eigenes Album auf den Markt zu werfen. Letztes war 'To The Bone', unter dessen Name er seit einem Jahr tourt. Da er damit in 2018 überaus erfolgreich war, hat WILSON beschlossen, noch ein paar Termine in diesem Jahr nachzuschieben. Somit haben MIKE und ich die Gelegenheit, ihn mit seiner herausragenden Band im Berliner Tempodrom zu erleben. STEVEN WILSON spielt wieder ohne Vorprogramm. Seine Show ist so umfangreich, dass er gut darauf verzichten kann. Rund drei Stunden erwarten uns mit einer Auswahl seiner besten und bekanntesten Werke aus der PORCUPINE TREE- Ära und seiner letzten Solo Veröffentlichungen. Für meine Begriffe schwächelt 'To The Bone' ein wenig. Es mangelt mir an mitreißenden Momenten, wie sie noch auf 'The Raven That Refused To Sing' und 'Hand. Cannot. Erased.' vorhanden waren. Diese CDs kann man als Hörer in einem Stück verschlingen.
