CRESTON VALLEY

It is common for a newcomer to the area to wonder about the reference to the Creston "Valley". Locals use the term to include the surrounding areas of Lister, Canyon, Erickson, Wynndel, West Creston, and even the mountain communities 'behind' Creston of Lakeview, Arrow Creek, and Kitchener. The 'flats' is the expanse of land up to Duck Lake, where the Kootenay River flows. Goat River flows south of town, weaving in from Kitchener and Canyon.

With so many charming surrounding communities, the 'Creston Valley' is often heard as a reference to the collective group. The Valley is bordered by the Skimmerhorn, Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges, giving it spectacular views and its' own micro-climate, commonly compared to the Okanagan with fruit trees and vineyards.

Creston is also a very short drive away from Kootenay Lake and the historic East Shore. East Shore communities include , Sirdar, Twin Bays, Boswell, Gray Creek, and Crawford Bay. In Kootenay Bay, the world's longest free ferry crosses Kootenay Lake to Balfour, outside of Nelson. You can also get to Nelson by going over "the summit", taking the Kootenay pass to Salmo and then going north to Nelson.

RETIREMENT

In 2015, Creston was named a "Top Retirement Destination" in by the Globe and Mail.

The story was written up in the Creston Valley Advance, after Creston was cited amongst 4 other communities across Canada. Quoted from the January 15, 2015 issue, the article explains,

“The town of Creston, B.C., is already home to a large number of retirees, and they keep on coming, especially from Alberta,” writes Kerry Gold. “They are drawn to a microclimate that means winter temperatures seldom dip far below freezing, and there’s hardly any snow. They also like the fact that Creston is the epitome of the idyllic small town, with a population of about 5,000. It’s got its own little hospital, courses available at the College of the Rockies, five nearby ski hills, and is a short drive to the border – where locals regularly fuel up in the town of Porthill".
