My research interests lie in the design, development, and application of functional materials made from lanthanide ion complexes for imaging in environmental and biological systems. The lanthanides have long been studied for their interesting luminescent and magnetic properties. Through the use of these well- known properties, lanthanide ion complexes are excellent choices for use as probes to monitor living and non-living systems.     UF and Gran Telescopio Canarias Unveil New Eye on the Infrared Sky Contact: Prof. Stephen Eikenberry [email protected] 352-514-7632 The world's largest telescope - the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) 10.4-meter telescope on the island of La Palma, Spain - announced the unveiling of a new window into the mysteries of deep space, with the release of the Canarias InfraRed Camera Experiment (CIRCE) for the use of astronomers worldwide. CIRCE - a highly-sensitive camera for the near-infrared (1.0 to 2.5 micron) wavelength range - was developed at the University of Florida (UF) Department of Astronomy by a team led by Professor Stephen Eikenberry and consisting largely of UF students and postdoctoral scholars. This approach provided a path for graduate students and young PhDs to be trained as instrument builders, which is not generally possible in the context of modern major facility instrumentation projects for large telescopes, where the much larger instruments, budgets, and teams generally prevent untrained personnel from "learning the ropes" of instrument-building in a broad sense. This article-based dissertation includes papers in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology, with an emphasis on taphonomy. Studies encompass analyses of human osseous material and human decomposition in relation to spatial and social contexts, from both theoretical and methodological perspectives. In this work, a combination of bioarchaeological and forensic taphonomic methods are used to address the question of what processes have shaped mortuary contexts. Specifically, these questions are raised in relation to the peri- and postmortem circumstances of the dead in the Iron Age ringfort of Sandby borg; about the rate and progress of human decomposition in a Swedish outdoor environment and in a coffin; how this taphonomic knowledge can inform interpretations of mortuary contexts; and of the current state and potential developments of forensic anthropology and archaeology in Sweden. The result provides us with information of depositional history in terms of events that created and modified human remains deposits, and how this information can be used. Such knowledge is helpful for interpretations of what has occurred in the distant as well as recent pasts. In so doing, the knowledge of peri- and postmortem corporeal circumstances and how it can be used has been advanced in relation to both the archaeological and forensic fields.

Here, we define the distribution and extent of genomic diversity across the range of the iconic but threatened Acacia purpureopetala, a beautiful sprawling shrub with mauve flowers, restricted to a few disjunct populations in far north Queensland, Australia. Seed production is poor and germination sporadic, but the species occurs in abundance at some field sites. While several thousands of SNP markers were recovered, comparable to other Acacia species, very low levels of heterozygosity and allelic variation suggested inbreeding. Limited dispersal most likely contributed towards the high levels of divergence amongst field sites and, using a generalised dissimilarity modelling framework amongst environmental, spatial and floristic data, spatial distance was found to be the strongest factor explaining the current distribution of genetic diversity.
